Modifiziere die /etc/inittab:
Mach Dir dort Deinen eigenen Runlevel (z.B. 8) und starte in mit diesem
Runlevel Deine Applikation. Du kannst Dann auch genau entscheiden was Du
alles starten willst.(in deinem Fall startest Du in diesem Runlevel keine 6
mingetty `s )

Subject: My LILO broke at Mandrake 6.0 with System Commander
Date: Wed, 25 Aug 1999 11:45:31 -0400

Greetings!

I checked DejaNews, but couldn't form a search which described this
problem (at least not without returning 2000--5000 hits). Hopefully
someone out there has run into this...

First, the following configuration has worked well for the last year or
so;

- ADM K6-233
- two IDE hard drives. Both on primary IDE controller. 0x80 contains a
couple of Windoze on separate primary partitions.
- Two IDE CDROM drives; one burner, one 32X. Both on secondary IDE
controller.
- Future Domain 3260 SCSI controller with bootable BIOS.
- 500M SCSI hard drive (0x82) SCSI ID 4. Contained RedHat 5.0.
- SCSI 4x CDROM drive
- System Commander (commercial boot loader) installed on MBR of 0x80.
- LILO installed on SCSI root disk (0x82)

System boots. Goes through three BIOS's (graphics card, mother board,
SCSI). Then System Commander comes up and asks you to select an OS
(similar to LILO, but has more features necessary for multiple copies of
Windoze). I select "Linux" and it starts up the LILO on the SCSI
drive. Life is good.

I then ran the RedHat 5.2 upgrade. Had LILO installed to boot sector of
SCSI root drive as before. Everything still works.

I then made the following changes;

- Removed both SCSI drives.
- Installed two 2.1GB SCSI drives, SCSI ID's 1,2 (0x82, 0x83)
- Installed Mandrake 6.0 to SCSI ID 1 (0x82). No errors.
- Had LILO installed to the boot sector of the root partition (SCSI
drive).

I rebooted and System Commander noticed the new LILO. I selected it,
but this time the system hangs after "LI".

Again, this worked at RH 5.2, but now doesn't at Mandrake 6.0.

I checked the /etc/lilo.conf and all values appear to be reasonable with
boot, root, map, etc all pointing to where they should be. Linux is the
only thing LILO boots. I re-ran lilo, but it didn't make any
difference. I can boot from the boot floppy without any trouble and the
rest of the install works as advertised.

So, What's happening?

I could just get rid of System Commander and install LILO to /dev/hda1,
but then I lose the ability to boot to multiple versions of Windoze. I
keep Win3.11 (for some old classics which don't run under Win95) and
Win95 on separate primary partitions. System Commander allows this and
boots either one, hiding the other from view and malicious mischief.
Unless the latest LILO can do this as well?

Thanks for any help.

I hear that you sould use SSH instead of Telnet for remote access. If I
switch to SSH, will a windows machine still be able to telnet into my
machine with their telnet client or will they have to get a SSH client?

Is SSH compatible with Telnet clients?

Thanks

Just curious, how do you know the swap partition has not been
touched?

Did you check if the swap is activated? Try swapon /dev/xxxx
where xxxx is your swap partition.

Have seen that most of the 'Compaq' modem's are
also belong to the cr**py 'Winmodem' class..
Get a real modem..

Unless that ISP happens to be Freeserv in the UK. They do not publish thier
DNS numbers and when you call them ( at 50p/min) they tell you that those
numbers are secret and cannot be divulged!

Using SSH can protect you against various network attacks like password
sniffing. Additionally, it can also provide a convenient and safe way to run
X applications on remote machines, and has a mechanism (ssh-agent) that can
help you if you have so many accounts you're forgetting their passwords.

SSH and telnet are completely different protocols. If your machine runs the
SSH daemon, but no telnet daemon, noone can connect to it via telnet. Of
course you can run both, but any client session using telnet will still be
vulnerable to attacks.

There are several Windows clients for SSH; see
http://www.net.lut.ac.uk/psst/ for pointers.

A different approach is to run telnet over SSL; for pointers, look around
www.openssl.org. I don't know if there are Windows clients for this.

If you have not changed anything library wise (i.e.: still using
libc5), Check out /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes. The bug in
Realplayer 5.0 is no joke. Try the fix on it, as well. Worked for me,
back at the 2.1.119 stage. Should still work now.

Subject: Upgraded 2.0.36 to 2.2.10,->login: can't resolve getutent
Date: Wed, 25 Aug 1999 11:58:32 -0400

Greetings all,

Yesterday I downloaded the 2.2.10 source from Sunsite, deleted the
symbolic link '/usr/src/linux'
pointing to '/usr/src/linux-2.0.36', untarred the source (creating
/usr/src/linux-2.2.10), recreated
the symbolic link 'linux', now pointing to 2.2.10, make menuconfig, make
dep, make modules, make zlilo
(Kernel To Big!), make menuconfig (modularize more), make dep, make
zlilo, 'Wander Off'.

Got back to work in another building, later, I decided to telnet in to
see if the process was done.

Telnetting into the box yielded the following.

   Escape character is '^]'.

   Linux 2.0.36 (linuxbox.alpeng.com) (ttyp0)

   linuxbox login: root
   Password:
   login: can't resolve symbol 'getutent'
   Connection closed by foreign host.

The console is still logged in as root.

Do I dare make module_install? If the machine reboots, will I need a
boot diskette? Can I fix the
error such that login works in the current environment (2.0.36 running)
and will continue to work
after the 2.2.10 kernel is running? Is 'make all' in order?

Thanks,

Jim DeVries

OH MAN, That's not a bug, it's a feature!

YOU need to create an adequate swap for any flavor
of Unix. Linux included.
How much memory? How much swap?
I've got 128MB and 256MB swap. I never had
a problem, however when I was debugging some
code that digitizes video to a raw device and then
extracts the video frames I had a memory leak.. sure
the swap grew.. but I was able to kill the app and
fix the code. Linux is very stable.
You don't want to fill up the swap on any machine..
If you allow that to happen the current app swapping
would probably segfault.

Demon publish theirs, or at least its relatively public knowledge now,
because they always used to give that information out.

It depends what you want to do. If you want a fully working GUI, you
are going to need a lot of RAM. A web server might not need much more
space than its htdocs tree and binaries.

You will want to use initrd to start with, check the kernel docs:

Documentation/initrd.txt

Hi

VMware looks great, although I haven't gotten around to testing it on
a "real" computer yet, only a meagre P133 over a slow network, and
with neither floppy nor CD to boot an OS from.

I might use it to run a bunch of instances of Windows in order to test
programs, and one thing that worries me, is the memory consumption.
Booting more vmware inststances than I could fit into physical memory,
seemed like a really poor idea - the computer went from a brisk pace
to a crawl in no time.

Does anybody have any experience booting several instances of NT with,
say, 16Mb each, and leaving it to Linux to manage virtual memory for them?
(I.e. I'd expect any VMware/NT instance that needed a lot of memory
intensively to swap like mad, but Linux should quickly have the
necessary parts of the VM's disk image in cache anyway, and the
swapping should be a lot faster than going to disk.)

Any experimental data here? Suggestions to optimum memory allocation
for various Windows versions? Any benchmarks or estimates on how much
swapping to Linux' disk cache costs?

or you can use the a command like the following in your boot script
(inittab of the proper rc file):

su --login UserName

where Username is the account you want to start. Make sure to NOT start
mingetty on that tty.

Here is one simple way. (I actual create a new run level myself)
In /etc/inittab do the following:
set the default runlevel to 5
  id:5:initdefault:

remove level 5 from the line that starts mingetty on tty1
  1:234:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty1

change the line to run xdm in level 5 to run the su command
  x:5:respawn:/su --login UserName

where UserName is the user whose account you want to jump into. You can
then put the startup stuff in the .profile or .bashrc file in the
~UserName directory.

I would like to thank Tristen Wibberley for pointing out the su --login
command to me yesterday. Saved lots of work.

Cheers,
Eric

Okay, I've loaded up VMware and yes Wow is appropriate but I can't seem
to get Windows95 to use the bridged network to reach my host computer's
(Linux) Network interface.

Now I the host uses connects to the network via dhcp and I state in
Windows95 that it should use dhcp but I can't seem to get it up and
running so that I can use Windows95 to reach the internet.

Any suggestions?? Thanks inadvance.

Weeks later, after my vacation.....

I have made a couple of CDROMs using the Mitsumi 4802te on my system, and have
had only a few, minor problems. My system consists of an old 80MHz 486 (on a
VESA motherboard), 16 Mb memory, and a 3 G hard drive. I'm running Slackware
3.3 upgraded to the 2.0.36 kernel. I downloaded and installed the latest stable
release of cdrecord, cdparanioa, and a TCL frontend called CDRTOASTER.

I've got a couple of moderately cheap CD-RW disks ('Shark' brand name, I
believe), and a box of BASF CD-R disks. So far, I've packaged one audio CD and
one data CD on the BASF disks, using the CD-RW disks as prototyping tools.

First, I'd cut an (audio or data) CD on the CD-RW disks, and when that worked,
I would re-do the work onto a CD-R disk. The CD-RW disks didn't read properly
in my CD walkman or on another CDROM drive, but read OK on my home stereo CD
player. I'd guess that the recording worked OK, but the audio system's laser
wasn't tuned to properly track the CD-RW disks. Data CD-RWs read properly on
both the CD recorder, and another CDROM drive.

In any case, cdrecord had only minor problems cutting CDs; it times out in the
'fixating' stage (with a 6 line report), but retries the operation
successfully. I believe that this has been reported, and may have something to
do with the fact that the drive uses a large, onboard buffer, and that the
cdrecord program attemts to 'fixate' the CD immediately after dropping the last
of the data into this buffer. We'll see if a fix comes up, but the problem
doesn't affect the accuracy or quality of the recording.

As for setup, I followed the CD-Recording HOWTO, and the README documentation
that came with cdrecord. I've configured my kernel for IDE-SCSI support as per
the documentation, and included the append hdc=ide-scsi option in LILO.

In other words, I'm a satisfied customer.

Look in the following:
http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/recovery/

both rescue* and resque* are stand alone systems, i.e. don't touch
your hard-disk. I use "resque_disk-2.0.22.tar.gz", which uses Linux
2.0.22, with a system that has the latest kernel. The author provides
enough info to create a more current version, just haven't go around
to it. Resque is a single diskette (1.44M) system.

Hope this is of utility.

Subject: cdrecord - Need help urgently

hello

i need to know how to elimitate the 2 second gap that cdrecored writes
to disk when recording audio disks.

this is the command i currently use:

 cdrecord dev=0,0 speed=2 -v -multi -audio defpregap=0 track1 track2
track3

but even with the default pregap set to 0, it still records 2 seconds of
silence between tracks.

is this right?

please help
