Why do I see a directory listing instead of my web page???
Running Apache 1.3.12. I think I set up the httpd.conf file correctly to
point to my index page. But I just get a directory listing. Any ideas???

VA Linux also sells them, and Sunset Systems(?). I'm sure there are a lot
more.
Scanners can be a problem. Dead mainstream SCSI models like the UMAX ones
work. For scanner compatibility, check the SANE page.
I don't know why you're having trouble with an Epson printer. All of them
seem to work. I've had two that work perfectly, a Stylus Pro and now a
900. With any of the major distributions, all you have to do is go to the
configuration area, and select the printer from a list, just like a Win/Mac
machine.

But some distributors reusing redhat might have "screwed" that up.
(in my case ixsoft.de/Lehmanns, took me some time to find out
as i haven't installed them).
Thus we also have some "Redhats" here but they just tell
"Halloween Linux Volume 3 (Blocksberg)" and that's actually
the most direct (and perhaps only hint in whole /etc/),
that it's based on redhat 6.0.

In fact, it's not. That's the customized first line with the recipient's
name in it.
The subject is a command line arg.

Actually I used the wrong compiler (gcc). It was written deep in the

This checks if the connection is working as it should be.
It can be rendered useless by wrong routing and such
To check only if the ppp interface is up, use ifconfig without any
parameters. If ppp0 shows up, you are connected.

Maybe putting an index.html in the directory helps.

When new features are added in 2.4 kernels for example,
some of them are desirable to be backported to 2.2 kernels. A
backport is a port from a newer kernel version to a prior one.

I was wondering if there is a simple way to move multiple files with the
same extension to a new extension, preserving the file's prefix. For
example, if I have file1.abc, file2.abc, file3.abc and want to move
them to file1.123, file2.123, file3.123, can i do them all at once? In
DOS I would type "ren *.abc *.123" but I can't find an equivilent for
that in Linux. Please help! Thank you.

Make sure that the DierctoryIndex directive mentions your index page.
for example:
DirectoryIndex index.html index.php index.cgi index.htm

Open up a volume control. If the CD player is mentioned, make sure it
isn't mute.
If there still doesn't seem to be a problem, open your machine up and
make sure there is a cable connecting the CDROM to the sound card.

Bryan,
Can you make a MINI-HOWTO on the above HJL@VALinux's sentence? This
would be great for those of us who have been itching to get back to
kernel hacking/recompiling ... but afraid to trash the system, due to
the nature of the "flawed configuration" of well-known distros!
TIA,
Jeff

It depends on Linux distributive that you use. As I remember in SuSe
there is a command `rmm' that do such things. In other you can use
command like:
for i in *.abc; do mv $i `echo $i|sed 's/\.abc$/\.123$/'`; done
This should work for reasonable amount of renaming files
