hi jay,
just a wild guess:
there's a brand new article at the SDB
e.g. http://sdb.suse.de/
it describes a little bug with LILO.
for some reason there has been some entry set as default: for the ease of
booting other OSs in case you're using LILO as your ownly boot manager.
it causes FAT partition to alter from "regular" to "hidden", sometimes.
at the SDB there's also a solution to it.
(you just have to add two lines to your lilo.conf")
so maybe you're problem is due to this "hidden" status.
by the way: you should be able to check the partitions status.
try something like
"fdisk -l /dev/hdc" to list the partition table.
other usefull commands are
"lilo -Tgeom"

Hi guys!
I have realy strange problem. I havent worked with Linux that long so
maybe its not so strange for someone else. Ok, my problem is:
When I put "nameserver 192.168.12.251" in my resolve.conf file the hosts
file stops working. Ok, that is not a problem I will just put the entries
I had in my hosts file in the my local DNS server (192.168.12.251). Then
every Linux PC can ping each other by name and I can mount stuff on other
Linux PC:s over my ethernet and so on. Ok, now to the strange problem.
After I have moved the stuff from the hosts file to my nameserver
everything works well, exept for one program called ArtBench. It wont
start after the changes in the resolv.conf file. ArtBech will not tell me
whats wrong, it just wont start!
Please help me!!!
Best regards

Hi,
I just downloaded TuxRacer and during the ./configure script, it checks
for OpenGL and doesn't find it. Okay, so far nothing new, I head over to
the Internet and search for OpenGL libraries for Linux. But.. I can't
find them. opengl.org has tons of info but no libs. Slackware
doesn't....
I use slack 7.1.
Anybody knows where to get it?

I just checked my machine with "locate tklogin" and find no such file
on it. It is running VA Linux Systems' version of Red Hat 6.2. Since
the system is working fine, I infer that that file is not required.

Hello.
Since I need to change the IP of my server I need to find all files which
contain this IP-Adress.
I tried grep -r xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx /
But this produced lot of output since /var/log/messages contain a lot of it
;-)
How may I do it excluding some directories?

Mike is running Red Hat 6.1. I have never run that, but I have run RH
6.0 and RH 6.2. The /etc/inittab is very simple, so his problem may be
more difficult to track down. Here is most of my /etc/inittab:
# Default runlevel. The runlevels used by RHS are:
# 0 - halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
# 1 - Single user mode
# 2 - Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have
networking)
# 3 - Full multiuser mode
# 4 - unused
# 5 - X11
# 6 - reboot (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
#
id:5:initdefault:
# System initialization.
si::sysinit:/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit
l0:0:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 0
[snip]
l6:6:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 6
# Things to run in every runlevel.
ud::once:/sbin/update
# Trap CTRL-ALT-DELETE
ca::ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -t3 -r now
# Run gettys in standard runlevels
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty1
[snip]
6:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty6
# Run xdm in runlevel 5
# xdm is now a separate service
x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon
So if the O.P.'s file looks like this, and he has the significant line
id:5:initdefault: on my machine set to id:3:initdefault: he should not
expect X Windowing system to be running after a reboot or a change in
run level to other than 5. If it is, he will have to look at
/etc/rc.d/rc and /etc/rcN.d, where N is the run level he wants to run
at. Directory /etc/rcN.d will be full of symbolic links of the form
[KS][0-9][0-9]frammis. The ones starting with K will cause the related
process (generally a daemon) to be killed on entering this run level,
and those starting with an S will be started on entering this run
level.
Perhaps someone has something in there that starts X. This is
unlikely, however.
Those links all point into /etc/rc.d/init.d, where the actual shell
scripts are that accomplish stuff.

Basically everything that you need is in
/etc/sysconf/network-scripts
/etc/resolv.conf
/etc/hosts
/etc/hosts.allow
/etc/hosts.deny
I'm not completely sure about the first one (this is RedHat-related
I think), but if you make a grep into /etc you will found.

In order for Tuxracer to run, you're going to need some sort of supported
3D video card with the appropriate drivers. Do you currently have a 3D
video card? If so, which one?

Look at 'man fetchmail' under 'DAEMON MODE'. The option is -d.
I put my .fetchmailrc with all entries for each user in /root.

Use symbolic links instead. Move a subtree of home to a new dir within usr
& have the old /home/branch become a symlink to /usr/branch, for example.
[You seem to be filling a 20GB drive pretty quickly!]
I'd spread /var between hda7 & hda8, *after* moving / to hda1 and 5 or 6.
This last is more involved though.

Probably I've found the problem...
from the "/usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes" file I've seen that I need
"mkinitrd-2.9-1".
I've searched everywhere (rpmfind.net, www.linux.org, www.redhat.com, ...)
and I find a lot of version of mkinitrd, but not the right one...
I've tried with lower versions but without success.
I've also tried to install version 3.0.9-1, but it asks me to download a
more recent "mktemp" utility and this one asks for a more recent "glibc"...
and so on (I fear...)
Do you know where I can find the 2.9-1 one???
Thank you again,

Ah, but starting with 2.2.18, NFSv3 is supported...

OK... Now we're getting somewhere :-) What version of X are you
using? I'm not familiar with Slackware 7.1, so I don't know what it ships
with.
Most likely, it's 3.3.6 since Slackeware prides itself on it's stability,
IIRC. First, you're going to need to install Glide. Unfortunately, I'm
not familiar with any version of Glide packaged specifically for
Slackware, which means you'll either need to download an RPM (such as
http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/freshmeat/Glide_V3/Glide_V3-2.60.16-1.1.i386.html)
as well as the development RPM for Glide
(http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/freshmeat/Glide_V3/Glide_V3-devel-2.60.16-1.1.i386.html)
or you'll need to pull the sourcecode from CVS (see
http://glide.sourceforge.net). Then, you'll need to install a version of
Mesa (http://mesa3d.sourceforge.net) compiled for Glide (or compile it
yourself, which is rather painless, IMHO).
Your other option is to upgrade your version of XFree86 to 4.0.*, which
contains 3D support for your card. That might be your best option.
Confused yet? :-)

Subject: Problem running remote SUn Apps from Linux
Date: Thu, 5 Apr 2001 22:45:19 +0800
I want to make Linux machine as X Terminal(only has Xserver application
installed). I want to run a proprietary application on the Sparc
remotely on the Linux. The problem is the display on Linux machine.
Since I cannot find any font server running on the Sun, I assume
its Xserver has font server integrated. So, I copy the fonts that will
be used by the application to Linux and set Linux font server to read the
fonts. When I list fonts on Linux Xserver, they all appear on the list.
My problem in details:
1) The application did run, and appear in Linux. But the font is small.
It should be bigger.
2) The application main window should be dark blue with the font in light
blue. It seems the font color is a lot darker than it should.
My main concern now is the font size. It did call the right font
though. FYI, I have run the application through Xwin client on
WinNT, and it's OK. It should work then on X Windows.
My steps in doing it:
1) COpy fonts from Sun to Linux.
2) telnet to Sun from Linux. Set DISPLAY environment.
3) Add the machine using xhost
4) RUn the application.
Thanks for reading.

They are following a standard, which is why it changed, IIRC. I'm pretty
sure that the startup scripts were restructured a bit in order to more
closely follow the LSB (along with other changes).

Yes, it's 3.3.6.

I think I'll try that anyway. Thanks.

Hi,
I have a multisession CD and when I mount it, it only mounts the first
session. And I need the data on the other session. Who do I mount
another session?
TIA
