So you have the same opinion as I have!
All my programs including star use getargs() which is more or
less getopt() alike in syntax. However it is older than getopt()
(I use it since 1984) so there are minor differences.
The original poster did:
- post wrong statements about getars() behaviour
- insists in minor differences between star and historical tar
to be a major problem while star is closer to the
behaviour of a typical UNIX program than historical tar.
- Unless you add something like the compat module from star
you will not be able to implement historical tar's behaviour
usign getopt().

Most Linux users prefer to use Real Modems (TM). Most power users in
general, for that matter, do the same. Winmodems are lobotomized pieces of
junk that nobody in his right mind would install in a computer. The only
reason you see so many of them today, especially in new computers, is that
they're cheap. As with most other things in life, though, you get what you
pay for.
(BTW, Real Modems aren't that expensive. You can find white-box internal
USR Sportster Voice 56K modems (model 1787, if I remember right) for maybe
$70-$80. At that price, why fart around with Winmodems?)

By "magnified", are you sure it's not just using a low resolution? Run
XConfigurator and select the highest resolution you can cope with by

I am having trouble with setting up a modem under linux (slackware
3.6)
and before anyone says anything - it is NOT a winmodem.
I decided to try the isapnp program because I didnt know what any of
the dip switches or jumpers did- no manual (I would greatly appreciate
information if someone else has this modem too)
I typed pnpdump >isapnp.conf and it finds it ok - I uncomment the bit
so it has address 3e8 and irq 4 ie. ttyS2
because I already have a io card taking ttys0 and 1
I also uncomment (ACT Y)
then I run isapnp isapnp.conf
it works ok.
I then try it out in minicom and it doesnt find it - cant type
anything to the modem !
Can anyone tell me whats wrong ? a conflict of some sort ?

What I do is print the file using the generic PostScript driver, to a file.
Then I type
fax 12223334444 filename.ps
and away it goes.
If you fax often (I do not) you might set up a fax queue.

Integrates Word Processing, Spreadsheet, ... and is compatible with
MSOffice formats as long as you do not use macroes or Basic. Slow in
loading and performance. Files created are considerably larger than
MSOffice's. Very low costs.

What I nedd help with is setting the graphics mode. With my clean,

Problem is, it runs in 3202008, and there doesnt seem to be a thing I
can do about it. I know I can do 1600120024 with my card and monitor,
but I can't persuade it do do anything but 3202008. WHat should I be

Funny, I always used the *drug dealer* analogy when explaining
Microsoft's business strategies with the likes of IE. They give away
some freebies only to get you hooked on the OS, once hooked they charge
you a fortune for the OS and apps. but by now it's too late - you're

please note, I can speak for myself only. Not so far ago I've found
_xfce_ by searching on my installation cd's. Description promises a

I've read this group since a few months but I've never read _xfce_ . I

_xfce_ is quit the right for me.
Hope I helped!

try usinf the -l anf -lf (log to file, and define logfile name) options
to see what was written to the xterm before it exited.
What is probably the problem is the the '-ls' option is passed to the
shell that the xterm starts... except that it isn't starting a shell, it
is startign sqlplus, so your PATH and other oracle variables are not
set.
Try some tests with a wrapper shell script - eg:
#!/bin/bash
#
# display environment for logging purposes
set
#
# maybe need to read profile files
. /etc/profile
. $HOME/.profile
. $HOME/.bashrc
#
# now try sqlplus
sqlplus
#
#
echo "Exiting wrapper"
