Netscape 4.73 is dead anyway.
Try mozilla (www.mozilla.org), I haven't checked the latest linux
builds, but the latest windows builds were very decent. And yes, it
supports java, and no, you don't have to compile it yourself.
Another thing with the 4.x series is that you need to exert a lot of
patience. If you let it do it's thing for a minute it will often
recover. But clicking and hitting keys while it's busy will only make it
worse.
good luck,

Hello fellow users,
Is it possible to block access to certain news servers?
Any suggestions on how to do it?

I creating a boot diskette from Slack 4.0 kernel 2.2.4, but
now get the error "ERROR 0x10" at boot prompt when
typing "mount root=/dev/hda".
Is this is due to kernels compatibility (the initial kernel on my
machine is 2.2.4) ?
It seems that no Slack distribution released with 2.2.4.
What I can do?

it thinks the screen size is 25x80, and doesn't support the vt102's
insert- and delete-line controls. (you can work around with a modified
terminal description, though other terminal emulators offer more
features).

though I find its use of fonts unsatisfactory).

We have experienced the same problem with RH 6.1. The problem seems to be
specific to the Tyan motherboard. The segmentation fault (which looks like
a crash dump actually) does not occur with other boards we have used such
as ASUS (P5-AB) and Gigabyte (both are supported by AMD). The Tyan board
has other minor bumps such as the parallel port going "off-line" even
though nothing has changed or been disconnected. Linux puts the port back
on-line whenever a print job is sent but it issues an annoying message to
the console. The vendor I purchased the Tyan board from was unsure whether
it fully supported Linux. Other than that, it seems to work fine (160+ days
uptime).

someone bumped the library version from 6 to 7, which is probably the

Hi, there,
I am looking for a SW that can test the integrity of graphic files of
different formats, mainly GIF and JPEG. I found a SW called 'jpeginfo' but it
only checks JPEG. Command line program is preferred so that I can use it in a
script.
If you know of such SW, please let me know!

My soundcard is a Generic Yamaha OPL3-SAx (YMF715/YMF719) non-PnP. Sorry to be so
non-specific, but this is a laptop and I don't have the technical specs readily
available. Here's the settings I'm using:
Device: OPL3-SA Windows Sound System port
I/O port = 530
IRQ = 5
DMA (A) = 1
DMA (B) = 0
Device: OPL3-SA MIDI port
I/O port = 388
IRQ = 7
Device: Yamaha OPL2/OPL3 FM synthesizer chip
I/O port = 388
I use the same settings regardless of whether I'm using the commercial OSS (soundon)
or booting to the kernel with sound compiled. Again, the system has no problem
playing CDs under either scenario. I've checked /proc/interrupts and there are no
conflicts.
> Also, do you have permissions to access /dev/dsp?
Okay, this was a problem. I did a chmod 666 with the same pitiful results. chmod
777 produced no joy.

Ah. Debian should have some sort of local boot script. By convention, it
has "local" somewhere in the name, and it is executed near the end of the
boot process. You can find it by doing:
# cd /etc
# find . -name \*local\*
...one of those will be the local bootscript. Put the setserial command
in there.

Subject: Secure/Clean Distrobution
Hey Everyone,
I've been using Mandrake 6.0 for about a year now, and am probably going
to wipe my hdd and start over with a new distrobution and then lay all
my data back on (I've learned a lot since then and want to start out
clean w/my knowledge to make sure I haven't left any weird
configurations from my 'experemental stage' =) ). What I'm looking for
is a distrobution that 1) focuses on security rather than looks/ease of
use, and 2) one with a very clean filesystem layout. I've heard
SlackWare and Debian both do this, but am curious as to the differences
of the two distros and their pros and cons. Any opinions are greately
welcome. I've also recently aquired an AST Ascienta laptop (P-100) and
will be throwing a distro on that as well (WooHoo!) and want to know any
opinions on what a good, clean (and fairly small) distro is for
something like that (with an 850mb hdd). I am a hardcore commandline
freak, but also love BlackBox, mainly because it's an extremely clean
GUI and it takes up minimal space/memory.
Thanks!

Umm, no-- authoritative answers come from any nameserver which is
queried about a zone for which it is a master or slave.
Non-authoritative answers come when you ask a particular nameserver
about other zones.
In particular, the top-level nameservers do not set the "AA" flag for
most queries-- you have to go to the nameservers they list (via an NS
RR) for a 2nd-level-domain to get an authoritative answer.

Try using ipchains to block out entire IPs. Probably something like:
ipchains -A input -s <newsgroupservername/ipaddress> -j DENY
That probably isn't the exact context you would use (depending on your
existing firewall), but I'm sure that ipchains can block specific
hosts. Unless you're talking about specific newsgroups, which I don't
think you can do.

At this point, I can log in remotely but I never get a shell.
Ctrl-alt-del doesn't quit the X server either. Any ideas?
Thanks,

insmod -f of tyhe ltmodem driver will work for me under 2.2.15, but it
tends to hang the machine if I interrupt dialling. I can't imagine
exactly how they managed that, but it looks like an apm/irq problem.
They're probably holding interrupts off while waiting for a response
via polling from the modem. The codes probably nasty to look at for
all the error handling it doesn't do!
: PCtel drivers (based on serial.c) will work for all of 2.2 as well as 2.4 kernels.
: They have released enough codes to compile on newer kernels (2.2.10 to 2.2.16

Yes, the ltmodem driver has less tendency to die on my 2.2.13 kernel,
but it manages to hang the machine there too.

Get an rpm package and install it, using your rpm tool. You really need
to read the instructions for your distro, if you don't know this!

Are you running the installed in X? Try the installer
while running KDE.

WINE = *WINDOWS* emulator. Not DOS.
Try VMWare, it's a really cool "computer emulator", which can run any
operating system at all (I think). I'm sure DOS wouldn't be a problem AT ALL.

Debian is a little idosyncratic here. You have to make your own
/etc/init.d/local and then create a symlink as appropriat; this can be
done with update-rc.d. See the man 8 update-rc.d for details.
