ok.. Its Friday....
In my first reply to this thread I mentioned about my local ISP offering
national access, I forgot to mention the address.. you can find them at
http://www.chatnet.com
This I have found very reliable.. and FAST. I use one of the national
numbers and get 53.33k connection every time on either windoze or Linux
with a modem.
again, if you sign-up please tell them I sent you.. :)

It is known that there is an infinite number of worlds, simply because
there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not
every one of them is inabited. Therfore, there must be a finite number of
inhabited worlds. Any finite number devided by infinity is as near to
nothing as makes no odds, so the averave population of all the planets in
the Universe ca be said to be zero. From this it follows that the
population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may
meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged immagination.

Mandrake started with a RedHat distro and has refined it somewhat. They also
have all modules optimized for a pentium class machine (where RedHat is still
compiled for a 386). This does not seem to make much of a difference for console
applications, but does make any X app a bit zipper. Mandrake includes different
(not necessarly better or worse, just different) extra applications on the
commercial/demo disk, than RedHat does with their commercial/demo disk.

I think you mean GNOME, rather than GNU...
The question is rather like asking if someone prefers strawberry ice cream over
chocolate ice cream, both are good, but a bit different from one another.
Personally I prefer KDE over GNOME, but have both installed on my system. Others
prefer GNOME over KDE. RedHat defaults to GNOME, but gives you KDE as an option.
Mandrake defaults to KDE, but also installs GNOME. Both distributions contain
other window managers and desktops also, so you can pick and choose whatever
suits you best.

Level of technical support, I'd imagine. If you're able to read the Usenet
newsgroups, go with Mandrake.

Well, GNU isn't a graphical interface per se. It's an organisation promoting
open source software.

I can't comment on KDE as I haven't used it (haven't ever seen the point
in ditching my simple window manager; I like my text configuration files
as well). KDE's best competition seems to be Gnome. You might like to
try both and make your own decisions ;).

I think you mean `sunclock'. You can find it on ftp.x.org in the

info crontab does not mention cron.allow or cron.deny.
I haven't had such files on my system, but I have no trouble
using crontab. Try removing your cron.allow file---unless
of course you started that way and still couldn't use crontab.

Also, you should check the permissions on /usr/bin/crontab.

Subject: help with OEM internal IDE zip drive?
Date: Fri, 17 Sep 1999 14:12:36 GMT

Hi,

I'm running Mandrake w/KDE on an HP Pavilion 7110Z ("Z" for Zip)

Mandrake sees the drive and I can read and write to it, but I want it to
behave basically like a big ol' floppy drive. No special party tricks or
nothin'. (When IS Iomega gonna write a Linux version of Tools?)

Anyway, Mandrake set it up as /dev/hdd1, here's the fstab:

/dev/hda1 / ext2 defaults 1 1
/dev/hdd1 /mnt/zip ext2 defaults 1 2
/dev/hda2 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto sync,user,noauto,nosuid,nodev,unhide 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto user,noauto,nosuid,exec,nodev,ro 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0622 0 0

I tried editing the parameters for /dev/hdd1 to match those of the
floppy...but that didn't work. I just want to be able to read and write to
ext2 and msdos/vfat zip disks and mount & unmount them easily. I read the
mini-HOWTO, but it really doesn't cover the IDE drive. I know this is just a
matter of not knowing how to edit the fstab and an incomplete understanding of
Linux/Unix filesystems. If someone can help me, I'll write it up and submit
it to the LDP for inclusion in the zip drive mini -Howto.

Thanks.

I'm guessing you are running gdm. In that case you 'can't' [well,
CTRL-ALT-DEL would do it I think].

You CAN choose a console-window [ie. not closing X down] by hitting
CTRL-ALT-Fx [where Fx is F1 through F6].

You can also make linux boot into the console-mode [ie. 'command
prompt'], by changing the runlevel linux is booting into. Don't
remember how to change that, but one way is running Xconfigurator and
NOT choosing to boot into X/gdm.

Yes, from the way I understand it, you might get a message reading something like,
'maximal mount count reached, check forced' or something like that.

This is like MS scandisk that runs when you suddenly power down in Win98...

Linux does some fault checking at every boot, which is part of the reason it takes so
long to boot, but this is actually a very valuable security check to make sure that
you're not mounting faulty disks. After so many mounts (or a shutdown error, or
something), it does a more extensive check, and that's probably why it's taking so
long for you to boot every so often...

If you had problems shutting down, it seems like ctrl-c and (I guess) skipping the
fsck, or whatever is running here, could only lead to more problems.

I'm still fairly new to Linux, but I'm pretty sure this is what happens.

Also, does Ctrl-Alt-Delete issue a clean shutdown to the machine? I always use
shutdown -h now or shutdown -r now ... (It's a single user station.) I figured that
would be safer, since Ctrl-Alt-Delete doesn't always map to a clean reboot...

i recently updated my suse6.0 to 6.2 (switched kernel 2.0.36 to 2.2.10).
as far as i have found out there has also been done a change in user
authentification. PAM is now (heavily (?)) used by login etc.

system activities seemed to be normal after the update... so far so
good...

but then: i tried to delete a user (due to misspelling of her name).
afterwards i tried to create a new user.
i typed:

useradd cc002 (for example)

and checked /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow in which obviously correct
entries have been made like:

passwd:

cc002:x:601:100::/home/cc002:/bin/bash

shadow:

cc002:!:10849:0:99999:7:0::cc002:!:10849:0:99999:7:0::

ok. now i checked on /home/cc002

ls -l /home/cc002

drwxr-xr-x 6 601 users 1024 Apr 27 14:30 cc002

"hmm.." i thought "now where is the mapping from uid 601 to "cc002"??

i tried to change passwd of cc002 which revealed that a user named cc002
does not exist.

passwd cc002
passwd: Unknown user cc002

a follow up removal ended like:

userdel cc002
userdel: user cc002 does not exist

finally i tried to delete the old (already deleted(!)) user, whiches
produced:

userdel <old-user>

userdel: error deleting password entry
userdel: error deleting shadow password entry

i am absolutely riddled. there seems to be no reference to the old
user-name (which was claimed to be deleted via yast) but userdel does
NOT complain about its non-existence but on errors on removal from
passwd and shadow (which is obvious, because there is NO line whether in
passwd nor in shadow containing the old user name).

ANY HINT/HELP IS ABSOLUTELY WELCOME!!

thanks in advance,

ingo.
