that's correct, but that does not hold true for the pentium line (p5,
p55c) processors. Anybody know if this is true for the AMD's? Also, does
anybody know if Linux will take advantage of the extra 4 bits?

Hum, well, not that much experienced user I am. Don't know what XWrapper is,
I guess it's some kind of, er, wrapper ? I configured XFree with XF86Setup
and after that it ran fine, and U**X spirit says when it works, don't bother
anymore. reading XFree docs and howtos will probably solve the XWrapper
mystery within a few seconds...

My guess is that it's a generic or fake server for install time only, but I
might be horribly wrong.

One sure thing is that your final link for X (-> XF86_SVGA) means that your
SVGA server is correctly installed.

Well, it doesn't take much effort when you are writing a Makefile
to put in an uninstall step. And yeah, while you may find it
relatively easy to remove a package from one machine, what if you
had 20 to do?

Compulsory is a tad strong, though.

What about the 'sudo' command? Works fine here. Gives an ordinary user
permission to run commands with superuser power. I've got myself in the
sudoers file as allowed to run shutdown, so all I have to do is type
'sudo shutdown -h now' then give my password - not root's. man sudo for
details on how to construct the file.

It is the latest TiMidity. The other one referred to was an early pre-release

The asound library is the library that goes with the ALSA sound driver.
(http://alsa.jcu.cz/) It shouldn't matter if it doesn't find it as it
should use the normal/default OSS sound driver.

The Gtk problem might be something to do with the installation of Gtk.
Can you send me the config.log file, I should be able to determine what's
wrong from that.

I tricked the system by doing the following. I got rid of there default
index.html file (I renamed it), then I created a symbolic link named
"index.html" to my root directory.

Do u see anything dangerous here?

P.S. It works

Ahhhhh. Libraries go at the end of the command line, like in my
example, (and if you have more than one library the order is
important) otherwise you will get unresolved symbols.

This applies whether you use static or dynamic linking.

Mine runs OK the *first* time I connect to my ISP. But... if I close
Netscape and end the PPP connection, and then reconnect the PPP some time
later and try to run Netscape again, it *always* freezes. I have to kill
Netscape, logout and re-login, and delete the remaining lock file.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong. (I'm using 4.5)

That's not uncommon. If you can't ctrl-alt-f2 to Virtual Console 2 or
ctrl-alt-backspace to kill the X server, your X server is probably
hung. If you had a network running or a terminal or other computer
hooked up to a serial port, you could restart the X server.

I had an flakey X server for my fairly new type of Video card but
with the combination of XFree86 3.3.3.1 and kernel 2.2, its all working
fine now. Seems to me that even if Netscape is messed up, the X
server shouldn't hang. Oh well.

I have compiled sound as a module and have tested it. kerneld
automatically loads sound as a module when I do:

cat sample.au > /dev/audio

or

cat /dev/sndstat

Now when playing sound from my cdrom, I just type cdplay and I get sound
played through my sound card .... but the sound module does not get
loaded. I can load sound and unload it which does not affect the cdrom
playing audio.

Is this natural?

On startup, I isapnp is called and I initialze further my opti-based
sound card with a separate program.

This is a post from a nave newbie, please be kind. I need help with un
tarring a tarball (I have not dealt with tar's previously.) As a GUI
person, I am having a little difficulty with the command lines, and the
man pages only confuse me further.

the problem- I had two files to untar- a *.tgz file and a *tar.gz
file. As I understand it, these are essentially the same thing.
Midnight Commander sees the contents of these files just fine, so I know
they are not corrupted. I could not untar or pass these through tar's
gzip filter (I just don't understand the syntax well enough.) I was able
to pass these files through gunzip and am now left with plain ol' *.tar
files. Can someone explain the untarring syntax to me in a manner less
arcane than the man pages? I just want to untar these
binaries....waaahhh!

Subject: Harddisk data loss
Date: Mon, 1 Feb 1999 03:13:23 +0100

Hi!

I'm having a really big problem with one of my logical HD. It occured when I
wanted to copy a file from my Linux partition to the VFAT partition of
another (physical too) drive, which itself partitionated in two partition (a
primary and an extended one, both of the VFAT type). Now when Linux tried to
write the file it obviously completly overwrote certain parts of the HD
(which has never occured before, it always worked fine). Now I can't even
access the first partition of this disk any longer, the second one still
works fine tough. I tried to fix it with Norton Disk Doctor, but it wouldn't
work. It seems as if the FAT is completely lost, when using DOS I only get
trash back if I try to access it. Does anyone know some good recovery tools,
or what I could do? I have a backup of some data that was on the disk, but
that I need the other data badly too. Maybe I'll get a new harddrive and
make a disk image of the old harddisk on the new one so I can experiment on
it to recover all the data without damaging anything.

Thanks, for your help in advance.

Sincerly, Jonathan
