There is a program called "sane" that will work with some parallel port
scanners. I have a Mustek 600 III EP plus scanner on my parallel port.
To scan I boot into windows. There is no simple way to get it working in
Linux.

What did you export? Export the directory, not the full path to the file
(so /usr/bin rather than /usr/bin/emacs).

emacs should go in /usr/bin, which should be on your $PATH anyway,
though. If not, then your system is seriously broken.

What command did you type to add directories to your $PATH?

Are you sure the IO and IRQ you are using are what /proc/pci reports? Or you
simply copied them from your friend's setup? What is the output of setserial -a
/dev/ttyS1 (or ttyS2 or ttyS3)?

If you want to make it so that X starts when you boot the computer,
you need to edit the initlevel in /etc/inittab. This differs from
distribution to distribution (I think) so I'm not going to tell you which
initlevel to use in case you have a strange setup.

Read the manpage on inittab and that should help though.

Hello,

I recently installed Slackware 7 but in order to use the SBlive
soundcard, I recompiled the kernel to 2.2.14 to satisfy requirements
( No SMP and all that) . I copied the bzImage to a floppy and booted
successfully with it. Having tested it to work , I used it to overwrite
the existing /vmlinuz ( made a backup of the stock vmlinuz ) . After
editing /etc/lilo.conf and running /sbin/lilo ,I rebooted .
The computer rebooted back to kernel 2.2.13 . I checked the size of the
vmlinuz file and it is the new one ( 2.2.14 ). I did the same checks
( booting from floppy and booted to 2.3.47).
I tried doing the kernel again this time to 2.3.47. Was successful but
upon rebooting, It was back to 2.2.13. Is there anything wrong with
lilo ?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Gil

Just like Robert said, but don't be scared if the screen starts filling
up with text when you're d/ling the file, if that happens just save the
file when it's finished d/ling and off you go.

Maybe me. I posted a patch to the GNOME Bug List at
http://bugs.gnome.org/db/42/4290.html to fix this.

You will need to install the gdm-1.0.0 source package to use my patch.
Log in as root and use YAST to install it from the "zq" fileset.

Save the patch as /usr/src/gdm.patch (you can cut and paste it from the
web site above).

Do this:

cd /usr/src
tar zxvf packages/SOURCES/gdm-1.0.0.tar.gz
cd gdm-1.0.0/src
patch </usr/src/gdm.patch
cd ..
./configure --prefix=/opt/gnome         <== don't leave the prefix out!
make
make install

That should fix it. (Your mileage may vary...)

it will, and am offering it for free in the spirit and the letter of the

If I remember correctly it is wxxx where xxx is the number of bytes to be
written. I might be able to find those commands for you. I might have them
lying around somewhere. I am not an expert on this topic.

I know
'a' is assemble (start typing in assembly lang commands)
'u' is unassemble (display assembly lang commands)
'd' dump dxxx where xxx is the address to start debugging at. xxx can be
used with 'a' and 'u'
'w' write to disk wxxx
'q' quit without saving.
'g' run program gxxx
't' trace
'r' register rcx, rcs rxx where xx is the register name.

I hope this is sort of what you're looking for.

Any other user executing on your local host can spy on your X session. I think
they can inject key sequences as well. For a single user workstation with an
adequate firewall, probably not a big deal. For a multiuser system, or one
that is not secured properly, probably it is a security hole.

Okay, what is it THIS time; posting to wrong group, don't like my nic;
what?

I understand that people that use nics are prejudiced against in the
helpful linux community; but after reading that a leading security

Someone somewhere is always going to have a hair across their butt

like you because you're not as smart. You're dealing with the world
