Depends on where in S.C. Generally, 60K would be a little bit
low, but pretty much guaranteed. Unless its an ISP; then dont
expect a dime over 40K for a starting salary.

Here's a suggestion. Of course find out what you can about the
market, but then when you go into salary negotiations say "Look, I'd
like you to help me figure this out. I think I'll really like working
here and don't want to settle for something too low and then have to
jump ship just to get what I'm worth."
They'll get the point.

Hmm.. I'm not an expert on printing at all, but how is it possible that you
can set up fax packages

that didn't do it... it is actually sending an email to the owner of the
cron job, which can't find the owners mailbox for some reason, and the
mail gets sent to root as
"+ N 5 Mar 5 Mail Delivery Subs (3,743) Returned mail: User unknown"
I can't find any other cron files for the user in question, even tho the

I'm thinking about just writing a crontab to blow away roots email file

I *am* a programmer, but I've done zero programming to get my Linux
systems up and running. Linux isn't a language, so "not
understanding the language" implies that your IT person doesn't know
what Linux is. :-)
>And another reason it doesn't have plug and play capabilities. Is

Yes, mostly. I believe Corel Linux can detect some kinds of
hardware, for instance video cards, but it isn't as P'n'P as Windows
9x is. Contrariwise, I prefer that -- when P'n'P *doesn't work*, it
can be a nightmare to debug under Windows. (I'm also an ex-IT guy
myself, so I know.) One reason to install Corel Linux now would be
to learn about computers, and I don't see why having to know what
hardware is installed in your computer is a bad thing.

No and no. But there is a learning curve. Don't be surprised if you get
frustrated. I've known people to do this. I did once. But only once. But it
was not fun. But in the end, I bounced back, and I love it! Maybe someone
else could give you some advice on choice of distribution though -- I haven't
heard great things about Corel Linux. I have, however, heard great things about
Mandrake 7. I haven't tried either, but I'm getting a Mandrake 7 CD in a week
or so, if you can wait that long for my advice... :-)

Cyrix has done some really silly things in the past, like using
"P-Ratings" instead of actual MHz to try to convince you that their chips
are faster than they are. There was a freaking huge thread about this
very topic on this NG or comp.os.linux.hardware not too long ago; search
Deja and see what you can find. Several people got very emotional IIRC.
Try one thing for me if you believe that Linux is misreporting the speed
of your processor and performing more slowly than it should: Get the
distributed.net client and run it under WinXX on your machine, then run it
under Linux on your machine. Odds are the Linux client will be faster :-)

I believe you are supposed to combine the xterm startup with starting mc as one
line:
xterm -e mc &
I'm not too sure if the "&" is appropriate, but you can try it both ways. Take
a look at the man page for xterm ("man xterm").

It is posible. First you need to download a usb backport of the 2.3 kernel.
Try www.linux-usb.org Then you have to enable scsi suport and usb scsi
support. It is considered a mass storage device. That is all I know you are

I think the acrobat 4.05 is for the linux 2.2.x kernel versions as it
works with my SuSE 6.3; the Acroreader 4.00 did not load as a plugin
for netscape and the docs did say it was for the linux 2.0.x version
libs. 4.05 if probably a recompiled 4.00 for the 2.2.x libs.
