From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Ivory Bones)

I attached a serial printer to COM2 on my linux box.

I can send a text file to the printer with cat filename > /dev/ttyS1

I used printtool to make a printcap file and it too, prints the test line.

However, every attempt to use lpr fails.

The lpq command reports a file in the queue but /dev/lp0 is busy.

Well, /dev/lp0 is 'busy'! It's not even connected. How do I tell linux to
use the printer clearly defined in the printcap file?

What am I doing wrong here? Whose more confused, me or Linux?

Don

 Don
Why not post your printcap. Assuming you have restarted the
lpd then printcap is its only directives (usually).

Also check the cable.. I had a similar problem last month, or so, and
After banging my head I bought a new printer cable.

So you don't autoreset terminals when they have workorders up.

Dunno. I thought everybody was using VT420s or VT510s by
now. Perhaps I was deluded. But for that matter, with
a truly dumb terminal, you can build the screen-blanking
function right into the app.

Usually, with a decently-well-designed app, the information
displayed on the screen is not hardcoded. It may be built
or arranged dynamically by the app, but it usually comes
from a data file someplace, UIAGM.

you will need to have UDF filesystem support in the kernel at the least. I want to say
there is another thing you need but it escapes me at this point.

if u are using 2.2.13 u will need to download the UDF patch or you could just
download a new 2.4 kernel which has all the stuff you need ( no need to
patch your kernel to death).

Check the audio cable leading from your CD-ROM to your sound card.
Does your CD play under windows using the old CD Player? That uses the CD-ROM
cable (Don't use Window Media Player to play CDs because it bypasses the
CD-ROM cable, and sucks too much processes)

this is not true, PINE does support POP3... as well as IMAP.

## in ~/.pinerc
inbox-path={your.mail.server/pop3}INBOX

this will prompt for a password every time you log in... i think you
can also tell it to use a password, and put it in that line in you .pinerc
file, but it has been a while.

using fetchmail is a good way to go for other reasons, such as being able
to pull from multiple mail servers. i am entirely satisfied with configuring
the genericstable/masquerading/smarthost options to sendmail, (you use these
to rewrite the addresses going out you linux box) after all your ISP does not
know about username@localhost (there is an Address Rewriting Howto, it should
be available at linuxdoc.org) for outbound mail, and using mutt for inbound
mail (it works beautifully with POP and IMAP, and is not nearly as bloated as
PINE).

anm@hawk:~$ ls -al /usr/local/bin/mutt
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1169476 Apr 29 15:03 /usr/local/bin/mutt

The standard StarDB in SO is Access like, Adabas D is an

Manbo-
Looking again at /etc/ftpaccess - five of the lines seem odd.
1) Try removing the limit users line - this might be the problem
2) I don't see a lot of value to defining /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow -
these
    are in default places

3) The guest-root and anonymous-root entries are equally well defined in the
password
file when defining the entries for those kinds of users, yank them.

you've got grotty hardware somewhere.
replace the flatcable with a new one.

if the problems persist move slowly to more expensive hardware (IDE
controler, memory, motherboard, the like)

If the app is sufficiently modular, you can indeed update pieces
of it en media res. However, even with a monolithe, it's not
hard to install a new version and set the initialisation scripts
so that the new version is used at each terminal the next time
that terminal finishes whatever it is doing and goes back to the
(if I may use a term from the jargon if the early 1980s) main
menu. Or when a different user logs on. Or whenever it's
appropriate; insert your favourite criterion here.

That stores state from the client's perspective, but he was
talking about state from the server's perspective, which is
at least as important. For some applications, the server
NEEDS to know what each client is doing. Especially when
you're dealing with a database, where there are consistency
issues to be handled. And, as he said, you can throw some
CGI or something into the picture and keep track of the
last page each client loaded, but that isn't quite the same
as knowing what each client is DOING. It might do in a
pinch, but there are better solutions.

Yes, just put the "-I" switch in either your inetd.conf,
or in xinetd.d/wu-ftpd -- that disable ident, we had
a similar problem.
