Subject: Travan-5 Internal IDE Tape Drive Problems.
Date: Sun, 12 Mar 2000 19:12:27 GMT
Hi :
I recently purchased a seagate TR-5 IDE tape drive and am completely
lost as to how to configure it. I can use mt
and tar, but something leads me to believe that the drive is not
configured optimally. When I perform multiple tar
operations, the File number below stays at zero, only the block number
changes. How do I interpret these block
numbers? Also, why the "unknown" tape drive message? If you have any
ideas, I would appreciate hearing them. Also, any sources of information
would be usefull too.
For example, when I do a: mt status, I get:
# mt -f /dev/ht0 status
Unknown tape drive type (type code 0)
File number=0, block number=0.
mt_resid: 0, mt_erreg: 0x0
mt_dsreg: 0x200, mt_gstat: 0x0
General status bits on (0):
Any thoughts on the best way to approach this?
Thanks
Keith

It would be a lot cheaper on you if you went to EBay and picked up a $500
500mhz AMD K6-2 system. The lower speeds (like 300mhz) are even cheaper.

download the RPMs from http://www.rpmfind.net/, what do I need to get?
Do I need to be careful that I have the same version of all the gnome

update gnome-libs and gnome-core?

Hello stupid! ;-)
You should try to avoid doing ANYTHING as 'root' (well, some things are
not possible to do as an ordinary user). If anything is going wrong as
'root' then it REALLY goes wrong.
A cracker that gets access to a user account may destroy that account,
but as 'root' you may repair the damage (using the backup -- you do make
backups, don't you?). A cracker that gets access to the 'root' account
may do whatever he/she likes with the whole computer!

The problem is that this machine
feels and behaves like 2,3 times slower than it's neighbour Intel PII 450 Mhz,
512 Kb cache, 128 Meg Ram. (compiled kernel for the comparisons)
I have recompiled and installed the kernel for the processor type K6
i see no real improovements in speed.
Q. How to get the kernel optimized for the AMD processor?
( from what i've read on the net, they usually beat the Intel's Pentiums)
For the moment, the reality showed me the inversed situation.
Thanks if somebody else has played with AMD proc and is willing to share his

The intel driver does not support the audio.
Check the opensound website where you can find
the open sound system program which is said to
support i810 chips. In any case, you'll get to
know which driver really works since it is not
really clear if it is actually the i810 or
another controller that deals with the sound.

No, it's not the root, it's just the initial default. Such a
user can `cd ..` from within the FTP shell. How do you
_restrict_ the user to this location as you would with a
restricted shell?
I also searched for this as I need to have an FTP account to
recieve private data, but the sender does not need to have full
access to the system. The best I found was to give them a
regular account so the data remains private, but to set their
shell to /bin/false.

Subject: Need KPanel to go away; Kppp says PPP not supported by kernel
Date: Sun, 12 Mar 2000 15:14:03 -0500
Hi-
I am running Red Hat Linux 6.1 using KDE.
I am trying to set up a machine for a business purpose
so a person who doesn't know much about computers can
only long in and run a shell script on a desktop icon.
The shell script makes use of some KDE components, so
I want to avoid using anything other than KDE.
I have the following two puzzles left to figure out:
a) Where can I find out how to make the K Panel go away for a
non-root user? The docs installed with it don't seem to tell me
how to do this. I've used kmenuedit to make all the menu choices
disappear,
but there are still some left. I would just as soon have the panel
disappear altogether. I'm about to start experiment with giving
the "kill" command suid access, but I'm hoping there's a better way.
If I can't make the KPanel go away, how can I make the
number of virtual desktops be 1? The slider bar in the configuration
menu has a minimum of 2. When I edit the file $HOME/.kde/config/kwmrc
and change the [NumberofDesktops] line to 1, it gets automatically
reset to 2 every time I log in.
b) The first time a non-root user starts up kppp, they get a message
saying the kernel doesn't support ppp. Everything works fine
after that, but the message is a little annoying. kppp is setup for
suid and the lock file is disabled. Any ideas how to make the
dialog box stop happening?
Any hints?
Thanks in advance.

this question has been answered here so many times, my dead grandmother
knows the answer. I:-) t's a bug in kppp. The latest version claims to fix
it.
The message only comes up once per reboot. Why are you rebooting so
much that the message is annoying? Even my laptop only gets rebooted about
once every three weeks, I can click "okay" once every three weeks without

I noticed that SuSE 6.3 seems to claim "Logical Volume Manager". Having
enjoyed the luxury of LVM on AIX, I'd be interested to hear if SuSE has
actually pulled it off. (Curiously, they are not flaunting this, perhaps
because they think that the unwashed masses won't know what it is. It's

I found a good site for wu-ftp. (after I'd given up and moved
on to other things :-) I don't know it this is the official home
site, I just drilled down to the answer to our question, which is
at
http://www.landfield.com/wu-ftpd/guest-howto.html
strip off the "guest-howto.html" to get the whole site.

I would just add one little thing here. Speaking as someone who made a
reasonably hefty investment in Linux books not too long ago, I discovered
that a lot of those books become paperweights very quickly due to the
speed of Linux development. I can occasionally use them to look up some
obscure command line option or something like that, but I don't find them
particularly helpful with most of the day-to-day things I do as I try to learn
the ins and outs of Linux.
I have found online documentation like LDP, Usenet, and the HOWTOs
far more up-to-date and helpful than paper books. I guess what I'm
really getting at is just that a newcomer should be prepared for large
sections of a book to become irrelevant very quickly and spend accordingly.
And above all else, choose your book wisely. As I said, I do use them
occasionally, but I haven't found them to be worth anywhere near what
I paid for them.
Of course, that's just one man's opinion. :)

If you're willing to pay the price for it...
I know I'm not. They can stick mwm up their **** as far as I'm concerned.
