Hi Mike,

>From your post I guess that you are trying the following: to write a shell
script called 'setenv' to set up your variables, under the bash shell, and you
seem to have two unrelated problems:

The first line in the script should have the complete path to your bash
executable. There are two possible problems here:

a) your bash is in another location (e.g. /usr/bin/bash). 'which bash' should
tell you where to find it

b) your script is has no executable permissions: try 'chmod +x FILE' where FILE
is the script

> If I leave that line out, then my script(s) seem to run ok. However, any variables

Usually when you call a script it opens a new shell, this new shell preform all
the commands in the script, and then exits. As a consequence no changes that
the script makes to the environment will be passed back to the parent. In this
case you obviously want that to set the environment, so you want it to run
under the same shell, under bash this is attained by

. ./FILE

(if you are in the same directory as the file)

Hi Matt,

I don't really know, but from the simptoms it seems that you entered in 'vi
editing mode'. Try the following:

set -o emacs

and see if your problems are gone. 'set -o vi' should reproduce your
problems. If that is the case then put the above line in the apropiate file
(.profile ....)

Subject: ghostscript works, but...
Date: 14 Mar 2000 11:15:07 GMT

Hi,
I have a small problem with ghostscript. This is what I get when trying to
print a page:

Error: /invalidfileaccess in (w)
Operand stack:
   msgs (%stderr)
Execution stack:
   %interp_exit () --nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval--
false --nostringval-- --nostringval-- %runexec_finish
--nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval--
Dictionary stack:
   --dict:681/701-- --dict:0/20-- --dict:44/200--
Current allocation mode is local
Current file position is 157

But then it produces a valid output file. So when I do 'lpr myfile.ps' I
get first a page with "Operand stack: msgs (%stderr)" and a few other
things, then a *perfectly* printed document. I wonder what I shoyuld do to
suppress these errors...

I am using ghostscript 4.03 which came with my slackware 3.6 system, and
the latest apsfilter filter, with which I tried several printer drivers
with similar but not identical errors. I am now using ljet4 for an HP
Laserjet 5MP.

Thanks,
Stefano

I have an installation of Linux 6.1 on device /dev/sdb. The LILO that I was
using was on /dev/sda. I managed to nuke /dev/sda's MBR (where I was
keeping LILO). Now, I don't have a way to boot my computer into Linux.
I've tried installing Linux on /dev/sda to get LILO back on that drive but I
can't configure LILO to boot from /dev/sdb.

After some mucking with the /etc/lilo.conf file, I managed to get an error
that said "First sector of /dev/sbd1 doesn't have a valid boot signature"
but I'm afraid that whole approach is a rat-hole.

I've looked at every howto and mini-howto that I could find but they just
don't seem to address this situation.

Any suggestions on how to fix my problem are appreciated. :-)

I've got the cheapbytes Mandrake 7.0 CD, the kernel-source=20
rpm copies files to /usr/src/linux-2.2.14/ ..... just where
it supposed to ???? Maybe I don't understand your question.

Jason's right about conf.modules, but there's some other stuff that may or
may not trip you up.

Brief rundown -

1) Compile relevant sound stuff into the kernel. You'll want the general
sound stuff and the OSS Soundblaster module. Compile them as modules if you
need isapnp (see later).

Don't forget to make modules & make modules_install afterwards.

2) You need to know the IRQ/DMA/Memory settings for the SB card. If it's pnp
on isa you'll need to run isapnp / pnpdump and set that up. (I'd suggest the
howto....)

3) Now you've got that stuff you can /etc/conf.modules to set up the sound
modules. (There's nice comments in there telling you what to do). This is
where you need the IRQ/DMA/Memory stuff.

4) run /sbin/depmod -a to sort out your modules dependencies. I think SuSE
may do this every time it boots, so you might be able to get away with it,
but what the 'eck.

5) Reboot from you new kernel.

6) Test it out using any old wav file and doing a "cat anyold.wav >
/dev/dsp". You should hear summat.

If you get probs, some useful stuff is...

cat /dev/sndstat - shows your sound card settings.
isapnp - if you have an isa pnp card, you'll see if its
being seen.
cat /proc/interrupts - lists irqs being used on your system
cat /proc/dma - lists dmas in use on your system.
lsmod - shows loaded modules
/sbin/modprobe {module} - trie to install a module + dependents.
rmmod {module} - unloads a module
insmod {module} - loads a module, but not dependencies.

I'm a linux newbie myself, so hopefully I havn't missed anything, but I'm at
work on an NT box & can't check! Hope the info helps anyhow -

Tim.

I've tried with various buffer sizes - this seems to get rid of
noises at the start, but once it access the disk I get the
noises. I t doesn't happen everytime the disk is accesses - but
seems to be when a lot of info is read.

What do you meen by the amps on my speakers? I'm using a laptop,
and the noises happen if I use just the internal speakers - or
plug into an amplifier.

Subject: Cannot start Win/DOS disks and partitions after RedHat6.1 installation
Date: Tue, 14 Mar 2000 13:34:21 GMT

I installed Win98 and then RHL6.1 on my PC at home with LILO in the MBR.
Everything worked. I did the same on my PC on my studio (I'm a student), but
after the installation I couldn't run my Windows partition anymore. When I
start my PC, I get to see LILO (what's normal). I have two choices: DOS and
Linux (default). I can start up Linux, but I can't start DOS (I just get the
message 'Loading DOS', that's all). Very weird is that I can't start up DOS
boot disks too! But I'm able to start up Linux boot disks. Even when I start
up with my old HD and my new one (with Win98 and RH6.1) is the 2nd drive,
I'm not able to run Win98 from the old HD. When i remove the new HD I can
start my old drive *and* all boot disks. So it seems that when my new HD
(Win98+RH6.1) is in my computer (as the 1st or 2nd drive) I'm able to run
Linux disks and partitions, but NOT Win98 disks and partitions. What has
caused this problem and how can I solve it?

My configuration: Asus P3BF mainboard, P3-600 CPU, Maxtor 13,6 Gb hard disk,
disk drive, CD-ROM drive, big tower, network card, gfx card.
Installation: I created a partition of 7 Gb with fdisk (DOS version). I
formatted this partition under DOS and installed Win98. Then I started the
Linux installation (boot disk + CD-ROM) and created 3 partitions with Disk
Druid: 16 Mb (swap), 16 Mb (/boot) and the rest of the HD (/). I asked to
put LILO in the MBR.
I hope you can help me. Thanks!

Stop using caps and turn the debug and kdebug options on in pppd. Then
look at the logfile.

How close is the version egcs-2.91.66 to the ANSI C++ standard and the
C++ described in version 3 of "The C++ Programming Language"?

How is the performance?

Would it be a viable alternative to C and gcc? I am working on a
project where C++ would actually be preferable if g++ is up to snuff.

Sooner or later you must pay for your sins. (Those who have already
paid may disregard this fortune).

AWE 64. But the SB module comes closest. I forgot about PnP.

The order the various cards get searched for is defined in a
kernel
header (scsi.o ???). But really, the answer to your
question is
a little easier if you are willing to use modules. Your
root filesystem
scsi support must be compiled into the kernel, no modules.
But if you
make the other scsi support a module, then when the kernel
boots there
is only the one card defined, your disk get assigned sda
(root being
sda2) and everything is great. Devfs is supposed to be able
to help with
this problem in general as well, as is using label in the
fstab. I
have not been able to get labels to work, but this
module/non-module
business works fine on my dual scsi machine.

I've always avoided the 'pay' section. What is the advantage of OSS?

I've had the same problem with RedHat 6.1 . It seems exportfs doesen't
restart all the needed services. Probably nothing too bad...

*spit* Point 1 -- Usenet is a text medium. Please turn off Netscape's
HTML posting option. Ick.

Point 2 -- VMWare is commercial software. To use it you need a license
(as you have noticed). You can get a 30 day evaluation license free
from VMWare by following the links on their site (www.vmware.com)
which say "Try Now". After 30 days, if you like it, you'll need to
purchase a license -- $99 for home/hobbyist use, $299 for commercial use.
No, it's not cheap, but IMHO it's a very nice product.
