I was running just fine with RH 6.0, including web browsing

is OK except fonts look funny in Netscape. Some large fonts
are so coarse as to be unreadable. How do I recover from
this? All advice appreciated.

Hi all.
I have a slight problem.
I have a redhat 6.1 machine (Sun Ultra 10) set up as my router here at
the office. My line to the rest of the world works like this: I have
a 100baseTx switch that I plug into that I don't have control over.
>From there, there are 2 routers. One that goes to purdue.edu at
100baseTx and one that goes to my isp with a T1. Any traffic through
my router to purdue.edu drops 50% of the packets. However, everything
works perfectly to any other server that I want to hit. I have tried
switching NICs, but to no avail.
Now, in order to test this, I have put a different linux box on the
same line. (different cable from machine to wall, but to the same
port on the wall). This linux box is a standard x86 workstation.
named, etc. is not running on this one. it has the exact same problem
going to purdue.edu. Now for the fun part. Reboot the linux box to
windows NT, and it works perfectly. purdue.edu and all.
If I take the network cable from the linux box (either one) and unplug
it from the wall, wait a few seconds, then plug it back in, the
machine reinitializes the card (I am assuming ) and everything works
fine. I set up a ping to www.purdue.edu and after about icmp_seq 500,
it starts dropping packets again.
anyone have any ideas?
The router that I am plugged into has been changed from autodetection
to forced 100baseT full-duplex, 100baseT half-duplex, etc. but
nothing has worked.
I would appreciate any advice you could give.

Subject: Tape backup: tar versus dump
Date: Sat, 17 Jun 2000 21:40:40 -0500
In reading the tape backup discussions in the comp.os.linux.*
newsgroups,
I read of some using tar for backups and some using dump (of the
standard
Linux commands, that is, 3rd party applications are a different story --
and
unacceptable to my dissertation advisor). We're using an HP 35480A (a
DDS DC [DDS-1 with hardware compression] SCSI drive).
How can one decide between tar and dump? Both have terse man pages (what
do you expect? :-) ) but dump's seems more inscruitable than tar's. I
know
what tar does (and how to write a short shell script to make it a
proper backup utility), but I don't really have a handle on dump.
In reading dump's man page, I find it backs up either filesystems or
directories. In backing up directories, it seems to work like tar.
In backing up filesystems, I understand that it works on a partition-by-
partition basis. I have been told that in doing so, it makes an image of
what is on the partition, but have seen no documentation that describes
what's exactly going on.
In any event, it seems that neither tar nor dump backup the MBR and the
partition size table. Thus in recovering from a total disk loss, one
would
have to partition the (new) hard disk, roll the backup tapes onto the
new
disk partitions one-by-one, and then run /sbin/lilo to write the MBR. Is
dump better for this than tar? How does one decide?
In addition, the different backup levels of dump are confusing. Why ten
different levels? Why not just two (full and incremental)? And how does
the, "Tower of Hanoi algorithm," help maintain the integrity of one's
data backup?
As you can tell, I have a lot of questions!

Date: Sun, 18 Jun 2000 02:50:36 GMT
I am tarring files from my dos/Windows partition and am getting
several errors:
tar: File <xxx> shrunk by <#> bytes, padding with zeros
When I read the tar file with
tar -tvf
it stops at the first <xxx> file during the tar -cvf. However
adding a -i (ignore blocks of zeros in archive) I can get past
the barrier.
If I try to read the tar file in Windows using WinZip I do not
have an equivalent -i method.
What causes the error in the first place and is there a way
I can overcome the problem?
Thanks.

I've just installed Mandrake 7.1 (99% RedHat), and while the
single-CPU kernel boots up fine on my dual-Celeron system, the SMP
kernel hangs on "checking for new hardware". Both 2.2.15-4mdksmp and
2.2.16-4mdksmp hang. Previous versions of Mandrake have not had this
problem on this machine.
Is there any way to enable an errorlog.text for a partial boot, so I
can backtrack and see just what the kernel is looking for and can't
find? I would guess it is related to the "kudzu" app, but other than
that I'm stumped.
Thank you,

I have a perl script that is hanging requiring me to ctrl-c it.

Subject: HELP!!!

When installing Mandrake, I get half way through the install, and I get
problems. I've searched high and low for an answer, but I can't find
anything for my specific problem. Ok, here are the specifics. I downloaded
Mandrake, and put the Mandrake directory on root on my c:\. I bought and
installed a new 10.2 GB hardrive that I will be dedicating to Linux, that
drive is d:\. When I create the boot disks I use hd.img, to install from
the hardrive. When I reboot, everything works perfectly well. I have no
problems creating the partitions on d: or anything like that(I have a "/",
"/home", and swap partitions). Then when DrakX attempts to continue
installing the packages, it gives me "depslist.ordered does not match
hdlist" error. I think the problem may be that since the drive it is
installing from is DOS the directories "RPMS", and "RPMS2" are in lowercase,
and Linux needs them to be uppercase. I have tried to find "mv" to rename
them, but I have had no luck. I can't just rename them in DOS since it is
case insensitive. When I attempt to continue with the install I get other
errors, but I am assuming that they are all a result of the first error.
What do you think? Any help would be VERY greatly appreciated. BTW this is
my first Linux install, so if possible I would like to stay with the
graphical install as much as possible. Thanks in advance.

I have just installed recently the final release of 7.1
and I could say that so far it is the most massive and
the coolest. It has found all the pieces of my hardware
during install time.
I'm running on Xfree4.0 and seems to be okay although
it doesn't support DPMS unlike the earlier releases.
Reiserfs is the thing to go. I like it. No more fsck's when
you boot the machine from a power failure or hitting
the reset button deliberately or by accident.

I suppose you could also write a plugin for NS to remap certain unknown
characters on-the-fly, if they are in a string or other displayable
text. Personally, I find all browsers to be a bit braindead, partly due
to wars over javascript standards, and other business concerns.
On the other hand, unicode is rather difficult to support properly.
Making browsers show up the same isn't easy.

Sort of. It's like all the parts except the "surface scan". In
Linux, you'd be using badblocks for a surface scan.
To invoke fsck on a typical Linux volume, you would type something
like:
e2fsck -fv /dev/hda1
Where "e2fsck" means "run a file system check on an e2fs volume".
(The second extended file system (e2fs) is the standard type of disk
partition for Linux through kernel 2.2.x._) The "-fv" means "fix any
problems you detect without asking me" and "tell me what you're
doing." /dev/hda1 means "the first partition on the first IDE hard
disk drive."
In Linux and other Unix-like systems, typing
man e2fsck
at a command prompt will give you help on using that command.
I agree with the advice you got to use "shutdown -h now" before
turning off your computer. Use "shutdown -r now" to reboot.

Grant,
Excellent explanation!!! It is very clear now ow to interpret those
values.
I tried the "free" command and there is 75588 bytes are actually used.
Is this OK? I'm running X (Gnome), Netscape and a terminal. I find hard
to believe that this will take about 74 Mb or RAM. Please correct me if
I'm wrong.
I also tried the command "top", as previously suggested, and I see that:
1) Under user there's guille, root and also nobody! How come is root
displayed if I'm only logged in as guille (my user account)?
2) According to "top" the SIZE of X is 47 Mb and ld-linux.so.2 is 36 Mb
! Is this right? Would this be because I also installed KDE?
By the way, sorry for posting 3 threads in one. I don't post very often
to newsgroups. So, to make sure that I would send the message to the

Basically, during the installation of VMware (2.0), installer finds
