Hey there,

I was hoping any of you out there could tell me how to go about deleting
the Linux partition on my HD and initializing and/or reformatting the
entire drive as one DOS partition? I tried booting from a floppy and
running FDISK, but it doesn't seem to want to recognize and delete the
Linux partition, and when I did a format, I only succeeded in wiping out
Windows from the DOS partition. Thanks in advance. Please post here as
well as email me if you can, otherwise just a reply to the group would
be fine.

Cheers,

Brandon

You can just copy the data wholesale between hard disks by using the block
devices which correspond to the entire disk.
`man dd'
`man split' for the details.

If you have two identical hard disks as /dev/hda and /dev/hdb :
dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdb bs=1024 ; sync
should copy the contents of hda to hdb, including the partition table, boot
record etc.

You can also store the raw image in a temporary file, but if it's larger than
2Gb (currently the max. file size on Intel) then pipe the output through split:

dd if=/dev/hda bs=1024 | gzip | split -b 2040m - rawimage.gz
should compress and split the data into 2040Mb chunks with the name
rawimage.gz.xx (where xx is a postfix of two letters which increases in
alphabetical order).
cat rawimage.gz.aa rawimage.gz.ab [...] | gunzip | dd of=/dev/<dev> bs=1024
should replace it.

NB. The split syntax comes from the Solaris man page and might be slightly
different for GNU/Linux.

dd(1) would do the trick, though it might not do the _right_ trick,
especially if your disks aren't _exactly_ the same :)

tar(1) (possibly with gzip(1)) would perhaps be better.

You aren't listening to me. I've *tried* booting to the floppy. Repeatedly,
in fact. It won't, even with the BIOS set to do it. I'll try the first

If I'm not totally wrong you can't use OSS, as the AWE 64 is not
supported. You can't use isapnp either, AFAIK, as this is a PCI device.
Again, this is easy, you just have to edit the conf.modules, as I
described it on my homepage...

Subject: removing linux partition
Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000 14:37:05 GMT

I have a problem with my linux partition. I have a 6 GB drive that has
a 3GB primary partition and a 3GB extended partition. On the extended
partition which I created with fdisk (dos) I made a partition of about
1.2 Gb on which I tried to install Corel Linux. For some reason the
install exited after 10% was completed and I had to restart. On
restarting the install took place but on the remaining 1.5GB.

I am now unable to remove the extended partition with fdisk (it says
that the logical driveon the partition has to be removed). However it
does not find any logical drive on the partition (ext). I want to
remove all the data from the drive (free 6GB) by removing the
partition. Any idea how I can go about doing that. My bios does not
support lower level formatting

Does anyone know of a very good data plotting/curve fitting tool for

It's a damn shame since you need some 128 MB RAM to run wine. Oh, well,

You installed past the 1024 cylinder limit: it was doomed anyway.

You need to follow the advice given to me for a different problem! Boot to
the cdrom or linux boot floppy. Do the install procedure up to the point
where you pick what to install. Choose the advanced options, not the
typical. Choose edit the partition table. Blow away the Linux partition(s).
Get out of the install. (Just shut the thing off if you have to!) Your
system should now see that area of your hard drive as free space.

The message seems to come out if select() fails (returning -1), but only
if the errno is something other than EINTR or EBADF. You could use
ltrace to see what errno comes back from select(), and perhaps that
will shed some light on the root cause.

(Not sure if that source is for the same telnet package that you'd have, but
it's probably close enough, and it's web-accessible without having to
extract it from an rpm bundle.)

This will work in a number of shells (bash etc.): Press <tab> twice. You
will then (after a short time) get a listing of all the valid commands
that are available to you. Use the "man" command to get info about how
to use a specific command. You may want to do "man man" for info on how
to use the "man" command.

I have a box where I'm running RH 6.1 on a 486, 8MB RAM, and 225 MB hard
drive and it works just fine. However, it is not running X Windows.
The RH 6.1 setup loads a lot of packages by default--whether or not they
are needed. And most of the optional packages make little difference in
the HD space needed compared to what is used by the default packages. I
only use RH 6.1 because I'm running it on all my other machines. I'm
told Debian or Slackware will run better on a 486.

There's your problem. DOS FDISK is too stupid to do very much with
partition tables, especially the ones that Linux fdisk writes. Boot from
a rescue disk or something, and try running Linux fdisk. That should
allow you to delete all the partitions on the drive. Or boot from a
rescue floppy and do "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hdX bs=512 count=1",
replacing X with the drive's designation.

Once you've done that, boot from a DOS floppy and run DOS FDISK. Use that
to create one huge bootable DOS partition, then do FDISK /MBR if you
haven't done that already. Then the WinXX install CD should be happy.
Whether *you* will be happy with WinXX is a different question; one you
should ask yourself after every Blue Screen of Death.

Go to http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/ and follow the

'mailing list' link, then search the 'expert' and 'cooker'
archives. I believe there was some discussion one on of those=20
lists about DiskDrake-NTFS=20

Try disabling every boot device *except* the floppy in the BIOS setup.
With a certain mobo/BIOS combo, I had to do this to boot from a CD-ROM.
Or, if the "linux single" at the LILO prompt doesn't work, try "linux
init=/bin/sh".

Subject: DHCPd/net-pf-17/3c59x help
Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000 11:02:23 -0500

Hi all, I need a hand here, can't get my networking to work :/
I'm trying to connect to dhcp server, but at boot time it doesn't even
allocate /dev/eth0 device. I did compile 3c59x module, kernel is
configured to autoload it, it even tries, but then says that it can't
find net-pf-17 module. After looking up some information on that, I
added line "alias net-pf-17 off" to my module.conf file. That took care
of the error message, but it still doesn't allocate the device, and
doesn't load the module.
If I do modprobe -v 3c59x, it loads the module fine, but doesn't use it,
and doesn't grab the card's interrupt.
Running slackware, with I think 2.2.13 kernel
