GCC 2.96 was an experimental, not-for-production-use version of the GCC
compiler. RedHat jumped the gun by releasing this compiler into their
distribution (they provide the real 2.95 compiler as 'kgcc' (kernel GCC) IIRC),
and have received lots of bad press about it.

To quote from the GCC developers mailinglist...

It has come to our attention that some GNU/Linux distributions are
 currently shipping with ``GCC 2.96''.

We would like to point out that GCC 2.96 is not a formal GCC release nor
will there ever be such a release. Rather, GCC 2.96 has been the code-
name for our development branch that will eventually become GCC 3.0.

Current snapshots of GCC, and any version labeled 2.96, produce object
files that are not compatible with those produced by either GCC 2.95.2 or
the forthcoming GCC 3.0. Therefore, programs built with these snapshots
will not be compatible with any official GCC release. Actually, C and
Fortran code will probably be compatible, but code in other languages,
most notably C++ due to incompatibilities in symbol encoding (``mangling''),
the standard library and the application binary interface (ABI), is likely
to fail in some way. Static linking against C++ libraries may make a
binary more portable, at the cost of increasing file size and memory use.

To avoid any confusion, we have bumped the version of our current
 development branch to GCC 2.97.

Please note that both GCC 2.96 and 2.97 are development versions; we
do not recommend using them for production purposes. Binaries built
using any version of GCC 2.96 or 2.97 will not be portable to systems
based on one of our regular releases.

If you encounter a bug in a compiler labeled 2.96, we suggest you
contact whoever supplied the compiler as we can not support 2.96
versions that were not issued by the GCC team.

Nope.

Just to make sure, open the document in acroread. Go to File->Document
Info->Fonts, then click on List All Fonts. All the fonts should be Type 1,
i.e. built in. Type 3 fonts are the ones that look bitmapped. Glad to

Add a vga=791 to your /etc/lilo.conf file then rerun lilo. E.g:

Hi everyone

I am trying to set up php4, apache on linux redhat 7 to connect to
Microsoft SQL server version 7 or 2000. I have downloaded the sybase open
client libraries and installed the common rpm and the openclient rpm.

When i try a mssql_connect("...","user","pass"); I get:

Warning: Sybase: Unable to connect in ...[the file name]

If I then do a mssql_get_last_message(); I receive:

ct_connect(): network packet layer: internal net library error: Net-
Library operation terminated due to disconnect

Does anyone know what is going on and what I should do next to get this to
work? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is there a better way of doing this? Is there a better, more robust,
efficient, viable solution?

Thanks in advance,

Annoying thing is, I get a different error each time. Once it even compiled
correctly, but I wasn't in the chrooted environment so it was build against
the wrong libraries. Never got it to work again though...

And among other things, less standard. This is FUD. You know perfectly
well why he would want to replace it ... so that he can use software
compiled on other distros, and so that his software can be used on
other distros.

> If you have problems with gcc 2.96 in RH 7, upgrade to the errata

The problem is gcc 2.96, nothing to do with RH's attempts to fix it
after the fact of their decision to pirate it and the gcc team's prompt
disinheritance of it ...

> upgrade to Red Hat Linux 7.1 which contains an even newer gcc. I've had

You mean "even worse gcc". I _dislike_ people who seek to use words to
deceive. "New" does not equate to "good". You can see that by the fact
that you are talking about a remedial change to a gcc that was also "new"
when it was introduced by RH, and was not "better" then either. By
all means discuss the merits or otherwise in plain english, but do not
seek to insinuate qualities by your use of loaded words.

Your hardware certainly DID change. It's PNP. That means that it's
configured by software. Ipso facto, when the software changes, the
hardware changes.

> different IRQ parameters?

In this case you are confused because the irq and io parameters are
not constants, they are what you set them too. If you don't decide to
set them, the kernel or another isapnp system will decide for you, and
thereafter it is your duty to follow the hardware/softwares decision.

It needs to have its executable permissions set. If you do

ls -l rp8_linux_sparc_cs1.bin

it will probably show -rw-r--r--

Use chmod to set the executable permissions eg

chmod +x rp8_linux_sparc_cs1.bin

and it should now have -rwx-r-xr-x.

man chmod for more info.

The program should now run. If you have colour set on your ls executables
usually show up as a red colour.

Subject: Re: Can I use FAT32 partitions using linuex?

What you'll want to do is first determine the "location" of the drive.

Primary master is usually /dev/hda
Primary Slave is /dev/hdb
Secondary Master is /dev/hdc and
Seconday Slave is /dev/hdd

Of course, any device other than a HDD will have different terminology,
but we're just talking HDD's here...

Next you'll want to know what partition it is on that drive. If it on
the same drive as linux, you can do "df" at a term windows and see what
device you are mounted on and what device #'s are in use. If it is on
another drive, use the drive device and 1
Ex. /dev/hdb1

The following info should be enough to get you started..

If Windows partition is before the linux partiotion on the same drive

mkdir /mnt/win
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/win (mount vfat partition on /dev/hda1 to
folder /mnt/win)

if it is after the linux partition

mkdir /mnt/win
mount -t vfat /dev/hda6 (I think) Same concept

I it is on a seaprate drive, once again use same concept...

mkdir /mnt/win
mount -t vfat /dev/hdb1 /mnt/win

In all cases you'll want to be root to do this...

If you need this connection to be persistent, you can setup the drive in
/etc/fstab to mount at boot. Look at that file and the man file for
fstab to get an idea how that works...

Finally, and maybe easier, you should be able to go into linuxconf or if
you didn't install that, MAYBE go into "setup" and use the menu driven
configuration to add a filesystem. In linuxconf it has the option to
add, you tell it the location and filesystem type and what options to
use. you can also mount it right there. It will make the path that you
specify if it doesn't exist.

Does it only work if you are a paying subscriber? What servers does it
connect to?
