Thank you very much for your help.
I saw the site but that's for floppy "oriented" tapes.
Thank you again,

Subject: Kernel 2.2.0 and pty's
Date: 01 Feb 1999 13:06:37 +0100
I've installed the 2.2.0 kernel, but when I boot up with this kernel
xterm doesn't work (nor rxvt). The error message is "out of pty". In
the file Changes, I've found that piece of info:
| As of 2.1.115, support for the deprecated major 4 /dev/ttyp* devices
| was removed. If necessary (eg, you get "out of pty" error messages when
| you obviously are not out of pty's), create major 3 /dev/tty* and major
| 2 /dev/pty* devices (see Documentation/devices.txt for more
| information). In general, you should make sure that your /dev
| directory is up-to-date if you are experiencing any problems.
The devices.txt only tells me the names: /dev/ttyp[0-9] and
/dev/ptyp[0-9], but I have these names in use by major 4 devices.
I would like to know how to create these devices, and if I can delete
the deprecated ones (I want to mantain a 2.0.35 kernel).
TIA.
(Please, send me a CC: my news server takes some days to update the
messages)

That is about what I expected to happen but no joy. What exactly it

Well, to be honest, it IS somewhat exotic hardware but I didn't know
that when I bought it. Shortly before getting Linux (Red Hat 5.1), I
bought a new and larger hard drive and thought it would be clever to
devote the old hard drive to Linux with a dual boot config. My
motherboard didn't support a drive as large as my new one (13 GB) so I
also bought a Promise UDMA controller to stick in a PCI slot.
Apparently, anything on the Promise controller hides from that
particular Linux distribution. The only method I had for
experimentation was to plug the old drive into the motherboard, try
something, swap to the Promise, fail, and try again. Pretty time
consuming to muck about with the hardware in addition to repeated
recompilations of the kernal as I tried various things and so most of
that 6 mos. was spent doing other things and waiting for a day off to
roll by. There are some Promise workarounds on the web but they appear
to be incomplete. I did eventually figure it out but it wasn't easy.

Well, it would be frightening except I don't put anything in a
newsgroup that I wouldn't hang in my front window.

Not yet. Part of the reason I bought it, though, was to learn these
things. Frustrating, but I much better now.
Thanks for the advice. That's one of the nicer things about Linux.

I hadn't found any solution exept for waiting Linus to finish his work
on the chip (He has annouced I 'll work for support this chipset after
finishing the 2.2.0 kernel, we are at the 2.2.1 so ...)

I've had Netscape 4.5 hang X (or at least grind the machine to a halt).
Try Netscape 4.? instead.
Try pressing Alt-F5 or Alt-F6 to flip back out of X and check the
CPU.
For what you're running I'd say 128Mb is ok.
Id assume Linux + KDE + Netscape = 32Mb

OS/2, BeOS, Mac OS, and Amiga OS are not BSD variants. They are not even
remotely related to UNIX. I think Solaris, Irix,
and HP-UX are more based on System V than BSD but I'm not sure.

Your computer complies with Linux minimum requirements :-) so go and buy a
commercial distribution or download one from the closest mirror you can find.
And if you're really interested go and get a good book about Linux, as without
it you'd spend so much time online that noone is willing to pay for... ;-)

hello
I've just added 3 new disks to my system. It now correctly detects
17 SCSI disks, on 3 ncr53c810. My problem has to do with the
SCSI devices numbering scheme. It currently allows space for 16
disks containing 16 partitions. The question is, is there an easy way
to access my 17th disk ?
kernel version is 2.0.x... may upgrade to 2.2.x if needed...
thanks in advance

High, I'm Ralez.
Regarding the line:
>> > are. If every one was as smart as I am (IQ == 153) they'd be using
I was just wondering if that IQ was taken from the Internet,
which I find VERY likely. People often brag about their IQ being real
high when they take those tests on the Internet. Well, even if you
obey all of the instructions that you get, it doesn't mean much.
I took one of those tests and I got 184, which is needless to say
rather unlikely, at least for a man like me. ;)
To get your real IQ, you must take a test that is made by
psychologists, and you cannot take it from the Internet. Simply the
fact that it's all done in a computer eliminates the possibility of
some aspects of the test. Just the environment fucks up the test
results, let alone the technical aspects.
I myself have once gone to a real IQ test, and it says I'm a 130,
which I think is quite believable, and that claim of the Internet test
that I have 184 is absolutely ridiculous.
Also, the claim of you, dear 153-gentleman, that you have 153, does
not show from your comment. :) I apologize if I have offended you, but
you simply cannot anounce that if everybody were so clever, they'd be
using Linux. You forget the fact the most people that use computers
(whether we like this or not) use it for elementary things Like word
processing, calculating stuff and very often to do things that must
even have specialized versions of all kinds of software.
Simply installing the Linux operating system is tough enough for such
a user, which should cover about 80% of the computer industry, and
learning how to use Linux and operating it is simply far too much
trouble for anyone to use that simply wants his job done without
having to learn every aspect of an entire OS.
I use WindowsNT, Linux and MacOS. I'm a very experienced computer and
I really, REALLY know what I'm talking about. My most favourite is
MacOS. HOLD IT! Let me finish before you jump on me, but nevermind,
you probably already stopped reading this. People are far too
pre-judgemental on that wonderful operating system. It's nothing for
computer nerds like most people on this newsgroup to like, but when
you simply have to get a job done, use MacOS. If you like ripping your
OS apart and putting it all together like I do, use Linux. ;) That's
my definition. Linux is NOT an operating system meant for the public,
and MacOS is an operating system for the public, and all of those who
want to do non-computer-related stuff easily, quickly and effeciently.
I mean, how on Earth do you think Apple has survived for so long? ;)
They hold on to their customers! Once a Mac-fan, always a Mac-fan. You
can almost say the same about Linux though. I will not even discuss
Windows in relevancy to this.
So please, stop referring to your IQ when distinguishing between the
socalled "best operating systems". There is no best operating system.
Windows, even WindowsNT is a complete waste of time and money, that's
pretty obvious, but then again, Windows barely passes for the
definition of an operating system. (Win95/98 truly and literaly don't
pass for the definition of an OS.)
