Look for ip_masq_icq at freshmeat. It's a non-official
kernel module. Untar it in /usr/src.
You'll need to have the kernel-source rpm
installed. Then copy the appropriate config file from
/usr/src/linux/configs to /usr/src/linux/.config.
Then fix the Makefile as follows:
S=$(shell egrep ...
include Makefile.arch
S=$(shell egrep ...
include Makefile.arch
Then do make install.

Okay; thank you and other replies.
As you can detect, I got a little, well, I let myself get overly frustrated;
so, I took a break.
What I did was reinstall everything, and Netscape printed okay without me
doing anything.
I did a : cp /usr/bin/lpr /usr/local/Acrobat4/bin and that got Acrobat
going.
I put in WP8 again and that works okay.
I reinstalled StarOffice and did some reading about it, and have to read
again because it said something about putting some commands in to keep the
files from piling up.
For now I will use StarOffice, copy and paste to WordPerfect, and print from
there.
My priority right now will be ipchains. I got that installed and ready to
go.
I had problems upgrading the kernel, in that the new kernel would disable
the network card. So, for now I chose to patch the kernel to get ipchains,
and will research and try to figure what had happened to the network card
when I tried upgrading the whole kernel.
I'm answering in such detail because besides being part of my nature, for
other new people I wanted to relate my expeirences and to say not to try and
rush or skip your reading; like I did. I always try and do things the way
it looks to me like it should be done; it's kind of a backwards way of
learning, but I did learn alot about other Linux stuff while trying to
figure the problem I started with. It actually could be a good way to
learn, but it is very frustrating and time consuming. Having had such a
difficult time, given that I didn't quit, I'm not likely to forget what I've
learned.
As I study Linux, many thoughts come to me of what a great impact this
knowledge could have for me and others. People that don't study computers
will continue to be influenced by computing in ways that they some will
never know about.

HI Philip
Run XF86Setup as root. From there, select the resolutions you would like to
have available to you in X.
Save the changes to XF86Config. Restart X. You can now select the resolution by
using the ctrl-alt (+-) combination. When you run run XFree86Setup, you should
leave xvidtune alone.

Hi Jon
Lilo might be installed on the other drive where Win 2k is installed.
Run fdisk /mbr on that drive also.
It sounds like MS format did a good format on the drive, but some users have
had to go through the Linux install program, up to the point where they are
prompted to install Linus partitions, then remove all partitions.
The PC is then rebooted without these partitions, and Win 9x is installed.
This is pretty drastic, so it really should be your last resort. Try fdisk /mbr
on the other drive first.

Subject: -hosts.deny- how does it deny? how do IPpackets move internally?
Date: Sat, 18 Mar 2000 08:32:25 +0100
hello!
as a test i put this line in my hosts.deny file:
ALL : ALL
it's supposed to deny all hosts on all ports, right?
but i can still browse the web, login on a ftp and use my icq.
so some info obviously gets to my computer. the html pages, the
icq-messages and so on.
so how does the deny-thing work?
i guess it's a client/server thing. is it?
i figure that it denys connections to servers on my computer (ie
apache and such), but doesn't care about info sent to clients that I
use on MY computer.
is that right?
i have read the manpage for hosts.access but it didn't explain this.
i want to understand this thoroughly.
first i thought that the computer simply looked at the IPnumbers on
the packets sent to me and immediately dropped them if they weren't
allowed in those files. but that's not the case.
so i wonder, when does my computer take action in dropping those
"denyed" packets? and based on what criteria?
and which daemon handles all this?
is that daemon the first one to take a look at IP packets arriving to
my computer?
btw... how does a IPpacket get handled in a linux system? i mean, how
does it move through the system (which programs/daemons/processes
"route" it) before it reaches it's final destination?
geez. a lot of questions. but i'm really curious about this.
furthermore i wonder this. is it common to log connections via the
hosts.* files? i read i can specify commands to be executed when
criterias are met in those files. this means i could have those
commands append a line of info (remote host/user, time and such) to
some logfile, right? is this possible?
i know (i think:)) most services on my computer already have their own
logging going on, but i still want to know.
would this be a good way?
thanks in adv. / alex

TrueType Paranoia
I trying to have my Windows font in Linux XFree, but with very bad
result.
I am using RedHat 6.2 (Gnome and KDE). I instaled TrueType thus xfs can
see them. I also made Fontmap file, font.dir and font.scale file. I
wonted to use Latin2 (iso8859-2) encoding, I tried also iso 10646
(Unicode). Without good result. Only some of the fonts (5%) I got Latin
characters, with other only 8859-1. WHy????
I used for example Tahoma TrueType font in Windows and I had Latin2
fonts, but not in XFree. I can print this fonts from the ghostscript and
I can see that fonts exist but can't be used. In font.scale file I have
all encodings created by ttfkmdir.
I also addded this fonts to StarOffice (which was the main aim) and
there is the same I can see Latin2 fonts. I was real fun of Linux, but
after one week fighting with TrueType I realy mad at it. Please help me
!
I realy need help.

yo.
i'm only a novice here, not knowing much of anything. but, i am very
surprised you dont have the gnu c/c++ compiler on your computer (put
there by the install).
i mean, isn't the compiler required to be able to use the "make"
script? that's a very common way to install programs on a linux
system.
to me, this sounds a bit fishy.

I get a constant failure to find eth0 everytime I reboot. I have
configured everything and deleted everything. The only time I don't get
a failure is when I delete eth0. I have been on this for 3 days now and
am tired of trying to figure it out. If anyone has any ideas, I would

AFAIK the first stage of the W2k bootloader can only boot from a
primary partition of the first BIOS disk. When you did install w2k on
the SCSI disk , this was the first BIOS disk. But now ( when you don't
use the "boot SCSI" option of your BIOS) it is the second BIOS disk.
AFAIK there are several options to get that system running:
IIRC lilo offers a option to masquerade a second BIOS disk as first BIOS
disk. Please check the lilo docs ( user.dvi or user.ps(.gz) , should be
somewhere on your disk under /usr/doc) for the exact syntax for that
option . But I'am not sure if that works.
Second option is to install lilo on the MBR of the the SCSI disk and
boot from SCSI. In that case , you have to convince lilo, that the SCSI
disk is the first BIOS disk by adding something like
disk=/dev/sda
bios=0x80
disk =/dev/hda
bios=0x81
to your lilo.conf

I'm new to Linux, so I don't know the answer to your question, but have you
heard of "Linux Undercover" or "The Linux Bible"? I have seen "Linux

I did fdisk /mbr on the win98 drive, like I said. I won't (read: can't) do
it to the Win2k drive because it's a dynamic NTFS5 drive.

I have a GeForce (Hercules DDR-DVI) and have had it successfully
operating under X
0) During install, select to not have X start at boot. This is a Bad
Thing (for now)
Before running X:
1) Get the XF86-SVGA server package from nVidia's site. This is a
must.
2) Follow their instructions Exactly. This includes renaiming the SVGA
server you already have in /usr/X11/bin
3) I never ran XF86Setup. it never worked on the card. Try
Xconfigurator (RedHat users) or XF86Config
4) While running through, if you don't see your card, do generic.
Sometimes in 3.3.5 the Gefore is listed, someplaces it isn't. Set the
memory for 32M (unless you have a Quatro, I guess).
5) If prompted for what type of server you want to use, do NOT try to
guess an accellerated server. Go with the SVGA server. The secret is
that the nVidia installer you ran previously put in a GeForce
accelerated X server with a SVGA name.
6) Do NOT select a max resolution bigger than the size you want your
desktop to be
7) Boot X. User Ctrl-Alt-KEYPAD '+' to increase resolution if needed.

Insert the disk on the otherwise free IDE device, spin it on and insert
