I am using vgetty for answering machine purposes. Can it be a
replacement for mgetty ie is vgetty is superset of mgetty or is it
different for this purpose?

I got the same problem as a user on a SuSE 6.0 system -- although the
player works perfectly for root. Needless to say, I will not be running
as root just to get RA streams.
Jim, and I'm pretty sure it's not a perms problem.

I do it every day running 20+ tracks of digital audio all the while
running real time fx and mixing down to 2 track DAT.
I use Digital audio cards that are unsupported by Linux and seeing as
they can't even get a SoundBlaster Live to work properly, most likely
never will be.

Thanks for the tip, it worked out great, no more unreadable fonts. And
thanks to the other poeple who replied, I appreciate it. I also used the
"use my default fonts" setting and I'm going to read those HOWTOs.

I have the following vi macro in my .exrc file on a FreeBSD box.
map q !}fmt 70 72^V^M
It is used to format paragraphs. When I put the same command in my .vimrc

invoke it:
fmt: 70: No such file or directory
fmt: 72: No such file or directory
How do I do the same in Linux?

IMNSHO, staroffice exists for the sole purpose of making Microsoft Office appear
well-designed, robust and performant. You might want to consider other, less
painful alternatives, such as putting your <body part of choice> into a kitchen
blender and setting for maximum speed.
Hope this helps.

AFAIK, with the standard syslogd there is no way to send *just* ipchains
stuff to its own file. However, you can send all kernel messages to a
separate file (this is really what is happening). /etc/syslog.conf:
kern.* /var/log/klog
*.info;mail.none;news.none;authpriv.none;kern.none /var/log/messages
then restart syslogd. Most of my klog here is actually ipchains with
occasional other stuff thrown in. YMMV.

I am suddenly having the same problem also, driving me nuts (using Redhat
6.1 with nearly all the update rpms installed, the newest rpms for netscape
and gnome). I have been told that gnome may be part of the problem, so I

What is this "ext2" image file thing? It is possible to create a CD with
an ext2 filesystem on it, but if you want a bootable CD, you'd be much
better off using ISO9660 with Rock Ridge extensions. This is what you'd
do:
mkisofs -b BOOT.IMG -c boot.catalog -r -T -o cdimage.iso BLAH
BOOT.IMG is a floppy image, usually 1.4M in size, that contains a Linux
kernel and probably an initial ramdisk. You can read the Bootdisk-HOWTO
to find out how to create such an image;
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Bootdisk-HOWTO.html
BLAH is the path to the file tree you wish to put onto the CD. mkisofs
has other options to exclude certain files/directory trees, or merge
images, or... read the man page to learn all about it.
Once you've done all that, put a blank CD into the CD-RW and do a
cdrecord -v speed=4 dev=/dev/sg0 cdimage.iso
adjusting the speed and dev parameters to your hardware. HTH,
