Greetings,

Fairly new to most elements of Linux. Currently running Mandrake 7.0.
I am looking for a way to telnet from Linux to a unix box that is
running an application configured for Wyse60 support (line graphics,
etc.).

Is there a Wyse60 capable Linux telnet application out there?

A Linux telnet app that supports ANSI graphics would be nice too.

I lost my password. I'm running rh6.2. So I edited /etc/passwd to
delete passwords. Worked fine. No password needed to login.

So then I used passwd to set a new password. No complaints seemed to
work fine. But...

tried to login with new password. didn't work!! passwd had changed
passwd password to "x". Deleted and tried again. Same thing. One
problem is that /etc was on a bad disk, which I've now replaced. Is
there some file missing?

So now, how do I set a password for root?

Try the newsreader slrn, which you most
likely have if you have tin.

In slrn, once you select your newsgroup,
you are prompted to tell it how many msgs
to download. It doesn't get the whole
1500 or whatever by default.

And yes, in response to the other part
of your question, it may take a while
for the headers to download. This,
within reason, is normal and varies
with the efficiency of your news server.

Configuring slrn is not hard, man slrn
contains a URL you can use for guidance.

Well, on the face of it looks as though the Linux box is advertising NFS
version 3 support through its portmapper, but that its kernel doesn't actually
support version 3, so it all comes apart.

Try forcing NFS version 2 at the Solaris end by using

   mount -o vers=2 w.x.y.z:/tmp /splat

and see whether that works any better.

I've been running the Linux version of Quake2 for a while, using a serial

Linux and X11 to recognize the new mouse, but Quake freaks out - as if it's

I need to change in the configuration (or drivers) to get Quake to work?

The problem is too much space, not too little. Linux resides past the
1024th cylinder on my 20 gig hard drive, so the version of LILO that I have
will not boot it. Rather than create a small /boot partition at the
beginning of the drive, I decided it would be far easier just to use
loadlin for the time being. I am not exactly sure how to install a
partition at the beginning of a drive, since it was my understanding that
fips does it at the end.

I would also add that in the DOS world, a filename has the so called
8.3 format. This filename.ext is coded right into the filesystem.
The filename (the 8) and the extension (3) are treated as if they
were different entities. However, in the Unix world, there is no such
split. One can have multiple extensions and they are still just a string
and have nothing to do with the filesystem code. This is one place
(and I think the only one) where DOS was easier. In Unix, one needs
a workaround since the extension is part of the filename. (the 8 part
of the filename.)

Just installed Doom and I can't get it to work with the mouse.

It aborts with "mouse init failed" or some such.

I have attempted to edit the ".doomrc" file with no success, perhaps

"mousetype" is set as PS/2.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This employment offer that you present lacks credibility.

A few reasons for this opinion are:

You use of the term "peecee" for the common computer term "PC" (Personal
Computer) this may be the result of lack of experince in the computer field,
OR you are attempting to present yourself as different persona then your
true identity.

There is a Hollywood, Florida near Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, your wording of
the locations makes it seem as though you are trying to appear less familiar
with the area than you in fact may be.

Then there is the ISP factor. Someone with a less than critical eye may
read your offer and think that you are located in Florida. However, I
believe you are located in the New York state in or near New York City.

Your email address is from Netmonger Communications, which is a small ISP
based in Bellmore NewYork. Netmonger Communications is so small or starved
for resources that it not able to provide a second authortive DNS server on
its own hosts. It's second authoritive DNS server is a DNS server run on a
host of Telecon Communications/Superior Net. Telecon Communications/Superior
Net is another ISP based in New York, in this case Johnstown New York.

However, you didn't connect to the internet through either of those ISP's.
Your connection was established through a third ISP located in New York
City, by the name of PANIX Public Access Networks Corporation. This ISP has
local dialup numbers for New York City, some other areas in New York outside
of New York City, and some area of New Jersey as well.

Your offer specifies Debian for your Linux distribution, you have
crossposted your offer into three Linux newsgroups but into none of the
debian specific newsgroups. Also since you are seeking professional and/or
expert support, there are newsgroups where you can advertise for the
services of computer consultants, you also did not crosspost into those
newsgroups either.

There is one more thing that can cause someone to doubt your offer's
credibility. This offer of yours is the only usenet newsgroup posting you
have made to date with this identity. This makes it appear that you may
have just created this on-line identity of [EMAIL PROTECTED] for the purpose
to make this one offer, perhaps for some ulterior motive.

These are some of the reasons that I find your offer to not be credible.

This problem is common with 24-bit displays, and occasionally with
32-bit displays. Try switching X to use a 16-bit display and see if it
goes away. (BTW, several other programs, including Netscape, suffer from
the same problem.)

Rumor had it that XFree86 4.0 would include a workaround for this
problem. I was under the impression that Mandrake 7.1 shipped with
XFree86 4.0. If so, and if that's what you're using, then obviously
this fix didn't arrive, which is unfortunate. If you're running XFree86
3.3.x and need a 24-bit display, though, you might consider upgrading
to XFree86 4.0.

No, this is not normal. Check your /etc/fstab and make sure that no
"conv=" strings are present in the line that specifies mount options for
the DOS partition. It should look like so:

/dev/hda1 /mnt/dos noexec,user,noauto 0 0

By default, no conversion is performed on DOS files, but you can get CRLF
-> LF translation on text files by specifying "conv=auto" in the fstab
options. Which distro is this, btw? Seems like a silly thing for them to
be doing....

There are two main valid points of view on what they are:
a) To the programmer, KDE and GNOME are a set of libraries intended to
provide various services not provided by X or UNIX.
b) To the user, KDE and GNOME represent a set of applications that
_use_ the libraries from a) to provide some common functionality
   across the set of applications.

If GNOME and KDE are "basically a set of libraries," or "basically
a set of apps _using_ those libraries," then presuably the answer
is that you indeed do need to have those libraries installed in order
to run the applications.

That is indeed the case; to run KDE stuff, you need the apps and the
relevant libraries. Ditto for GNOME. And as for the first question,
yes, they can run _fine_ along with whatever window manager you prefer
to use.

As far as I recall, the SiS6326 isn't supported by Xfree. The only
help I can give, is that there is a commercial driver from Xig which
is supposed to support this card. You can look at

I recently installed RedHat 6.2 on a Compaq Armada M300 laptop. As I wasn't
able to find an existing web page describing how to do this, I created one at

        http://www.cnbc.cmu.edu/~plaut/m300

I hope this is helpful to others who are interested in running Linux on this
great machine.

No it doesn't. How can making your choices at compile time be simpler
than making your choices at run time?

That guy should just stop messing up: remove his modules, compile and
install new ones, end of argument. I'm sorry he's not capable of

Here's a "guess", and certainly nothing more. Ensure (perhaps by ps ax |grep
xfs) that the X font server is running, beFORE you start X. That's the complaint
you are seeing, that unix/:-1 stuff is about XFS.
