The /MBR switch is *undocumented* but has been there since at least DOS 5.
It's designed to rewrite the first 446 bytes of the Master Boot Record
with a standard DOS bootsector, which does nothing but look for the first
"active" partition, and begin executing the code on the first sector of
that partition.

RedHat pisses me off, compared to SuSE, but I'm not the average consumer.
If you're going the RedHat route, I'd try Mandrake instead. It's kind of
nice for the new user and doesn't have quite as many problems as Corel
does. ("If Corel's installer works, it works great. If not, you're
skr00d.")

Since you mentioned hardware problems in the previous post, here's some
advice: Linux doesn't support quite as much hardware as Winblows does,
because the kernel developers refuse to sign NDAs just to get hardware
working and either have to reverse-engineer stuff or beg the hardware
companies for specs.

Internal PCI modems ("LoseModems") are often impossible to use under
Linux. If you have a Lucent or Rockwell WinModem, you have a better shot
at getting it working. Almost every SCSI device should work.
Parallel-port scanners won't work. Almost every NIC should work.
Printers might work, might not... tough to be sure without knowing the
exact model number. Anything USB will not be supported without a bit of
effort on your part. Check the canonical documentation sites:

http://www.linuxdoc.org
http://www.linuxnewbie.org

HTH, HAND, bonne chance.

Its very well possible. Just download the 1.16n pointrelease for Linux, install
it (it contains the essential executable), and just copy all other nessecary
files from your CD (pak0.pk3 e.a.: so basically every file you have installed on
your windows machine). Only the executable is platform depended (long live
virtual machines) and this you can rip from the pointrelease.

Good luck,

Subject: error, can't find shared library...
Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2000 06:23:45 GMT

Hello,
i wanted to install pv-wave (wave) on linux and
when I wanted to start wave I got the following
errormsg:

$> wave
..error in loading shared libraries :
libtermcap.so.2

then I searched all used libraries:
$> ldd /opt/vni/wave/bin/bin.linux/wave
   ..
   libtermcap.so.2 => not found
   ...

then I looked, whether libtermcap.so.2 is there:
$> ldconfig -p | grep libtermcap.so.2

libtermcap.so.2 (libc5) => /usr/i486-linux-
libc5/lib/libtermcap.so.2

Question: how can I tell the program wave to find
libterm.so.2
in the directory /usr/i486-linux-
libc5/lib/libtermcap.so.2 ??

Thanks
Cornel

In fact, this is not correct. From the Sed FAQ:

4.6. How do I insert a newline into the RHS of a substitution?

Six versions of sed permit '\n' to be typed directly into the RHS,
which is then converted to a newline on output: gsed-3.02.80,
   gsed-3.02a, gsed103 (with the -x switch), HHsed (a/k/a sed14),
sedmod, and UnixDOS sed. The easiest solution is to use one of
   these versions.

For other versions of sed, try one of the following:

   (a) Insert an unused character and pipe the output through tr:

      echo twolines | sed 's/two/& new=/' | tr "=" "\n" # produces
      two new
      lines

   (b) Use two backslashes (\\) from the shell prompt. Using bash:

      [bash-prompt]$ echo twolines | sed "s/two/& new\\
      >/"
      two new
      lines
      [bash-prompt]$

   (c) Write a multi-line script and use the backslash (\) in the
   middle of the "replace" portion:

      sed -f newline.sed files

      # newline.sed
      s/twolines/two new\
      lines/g

Some versions of sed may not need the trailing backslash. If so,
   remove it.

   (d) Use the "G" command:

G appends a newline, plus the contents of the hold space to the end
of the pattern space. If the hold space is empty, a newline is
appended anyway. The newline is stored in the pattern space as "\n"
where it can be addressed by grouping "\(...\)" and moved in the
RHS. Thus, to change the "twolines" example used earlier, the
   following script will work:

      sed '/twolines/{G;s/\(two\)\(lines\)\(\n\)/\1\3\2/;}'

Subject: Adaptec ADP1505A and Linux RH6.1 SCSI
Date: Sun, 26 Mar 2000 23:01:44 -0800

I would like to use my SCSI CDWR on my Linux box
( stock RH6.1 kernel 2.2.12-20 ).
More than a week I am trying to make my SCSI card running.
I have Adaptec AHA1505A card. It is an ISA card.
It does not matter what I do , I am not able to load module
for this card. I am always getting the following
message:

/lib/modules/2.2.12-20/scsi/aha152x.o: init_module: Device or resource
busy

According to info I have the correct module for this card is
'aha152x.o'.

What did I try to do 'til now:

- I did try to set ALL combinations of addresses and IRQs
using 'pnpdump' and 'isapnp'. 'isapnp' recognizes
the card and sets IRQ. The output of the 'isapnp' is
  ADP1505/849934698[0]{SCSI Controller }:
  Port 0x340; IRQ10 --- Enabled OK
- I did try to put an append line into lilo.conf
  The line was : append="aha152x=0x340,11,7,1,1"
Yes, I did try other combinations also. I was able
to boot the system without any error messages,
but 'lsmod' did not show module 'aha152x.o' loaded.
- I read ALL available RTFM I found on the NET,
- I read SCSI-HOWTO
- I read a lot of messages related to the 1505 on deja.com

BUT

I am still 'lost'... I am not able to load that
SCSI module..

Any hint, link, advice, URL, pointer is more than
welcome

Thanks

If you send ctrl-D to a fifo the receiving sees a ctrl-D not different
from any other character.

The ctrl-D character is only magic on a tty driver and only if the tty
is in icannon mode.

The receiving end of a fifo sees an EOF when the sending end closes the
fifo. Then the reader must close the fifo and open it avain before it
can be used. If the reader has opened the fifo in RDWR mode it will
never see an EOF, as the write end of the fifo is kept open by the
reader process.

I've tried floppy and hard drive install on two separate machines and
after installing the drivers for the network cards, backup_config is
killed before completion. I have tried new floppies and run scandisk
on them to reduce the chance they are the problem.

The machine I am trying to use as a firewall is a Compaq Deskpro 575
with AMD ethernet onboard (pcnet32) and a 3c509.

The other is generic: Gigabyte MB, Mastor hdds (15 and 3.2 gig),
3c900b. This is my main box - I just used it to see if the fault was
the computer or the software.

I am in rather desparate need of a firewall as I have been hacked
about four times in the last two days. Once, I reinstalled Linux and
was not up 10 seconds and they were in again!! I guess I shouldn't
have enabled network at boot 8-/

So I tried the command

Does anybody know about some tools to at least partially recover the
