When I 've tried to install WinLinux I had the same problem with my video
card... I have the famous Voodoo 3...
I solved this problem installing the recent version of Mandrake...
Its easier for a new one, than editing files...

When you recompiled the kernel did you remember to also recompile and
install the modules as well?

Subject: fetchmail timeout
Date: Wed, 5 Apr 2000 12:18:18 +1200
I have a problem with fetchmail. My linux mail server dials the ISP every
half hour and delivers/collects the mail. That works fine most of the time
but every now and then it gets stuck not being able to retrieve the mail.
The example below shows the log of the event.
The collection starts but the ISP comes back with a timeout on the deleting
the first message. The ISP can't help of course, they don't deal with any
non windows systems.
I have the impression that my end times out due to system overload at my
machine (486/100MHz) because the inhouse mail clients are querying their
mailbox quite frequently.
Is that possible or is it really the problem of the ISP.
Has anyone seen that kind of problem before?

Andreas Hagele

Subject: Att ecpg users: can't open SQLCA
Date: Wed, 05 Apr 2000 00:30:48 GMT
Hi,
I have my embedded SQL code setup to read from my PostgreSQL db and output
a html list. In order to do this, I have put in the statement:
EXEC SQL INCLUDE SQLCA;
in order to perform error checking with the cursors.
The code is fine, I just have a minor problem with ecpg complaining:
Error: Cannot open include file SQLCA in line 2
What is going on?
Thanks for your time.

Alex

This is odd. Netscape 4.7 can view PNG images on its own, just like GIF and
JPEG, without plugins. But if I look at the "applications preferences",
under PNG it says "Handled by: Unknown/Prompt User", whereas GIF and JPEG
say "Handled by: Netscape". Very strange.
I would guess whatever is preventing you from viewing PNG probably has
something to do with the plugin. Is there an entry in ~/.mime.types for
PNG?

Different strokes for different folks. The discussion wasn't about if
it is useful, just about how to do it.
Your point though is well taken... for some people. But I
often have at least a dozen or more xterms open with a shell
prompt in them, and I'd waste all manner of time figuring out
which host they are on, which user it is, and what the working
directory is if I didn't have that information in the prompt.
Clearly in my case it makes sense. I also use 100 column
xterms, so I've got 20 more characters to deal with than a 25x80
screen.
If I had one or maybe just two screens to remember (and if this
was 30 years ago when my memory worked better) it might make
sense to rely on memory.

My rc.inet1 has this: (Slackware 7)

# OK, time to set up the interface:

There are no errors mesages about dhcp or the ethernet card in the logs,
yet the eth0 interface is not set up (if config confirms this.) So I then
run the dhcpcd command AGAIN from the command prompt, I get no messages at
all echoed to the screen and now it works.
Why do I need to isssue this command twice? (I guess I shoudl add it to

You probably need to put the full path to the "wavp" command and the
audio.wav file in the rc.boot script. F'rexample,
/usr/bin/wavp /usr/share/sounds/audio.wav
and see if that works. Of course, you will have to have the partition
those files live on mounted at that point in the boot process. See if
that works...

Plugger is no longer needed for png support. Netscape will do a better
job itself.
Try removing any entries that have plugger handling png in netscape's
preferences.
I don't recall exactly which ones, as I have removed them a while back.
Just look around in Edit>Preferences>Navigator>Applications.
It works for me anyhow...

Don't do that! (there be better ways...)
You can move entire packages off of that partition, and access them
via a symlink. For example you probably have an /usr/X11 directory
(check carefully to make sure it isn't a symlink to something else,
because the one you want is whichever all of the other X11* directories
actually are linked to). Note that while this can be done with your
existing /usr/local partition, it will also work just as well if you
go out an buy a 30Gb disk and add it to your system by mounting
various partition to directories (such as /u1, /u2, /u3, etc.).
First make a place for these packages on /usr/local, then copy an
entire directory to that partition, the move the old directory to
a new name, and then link the new directory to the old name. Eventually,
when you are totally satisfied that all is well, you can use "rm -rf"
to delete the renamed directory tree from the /usr partition. Here is
an example set of commands:
# mkdir /usr/local/links
# cp -a /usr/X11 /usr/local/links
# mv /usr/X11 /usr/X11.old
# ln -s /usr/local/links/X11 /usr/X11
and five days later:
# rm -rf /usr/X11
For installing new packages you can first make a directory on the
other partition, then make a symlink, and then install the package.

the csound documentation is absolutely terrible. There's nothing in there
to help me with the compile process. I have been trying to build it on a
debian-esque system for about a day now and it refuses to cooperate. At
first there was a problem with the Makefile's INCLUDE variable that I
tracked down, and now there's an error during linking that says there's an
undefined variable. I think this is due to poor coding. If anyone has a
linux system and has compiled csound or would like to try :P please mail
me. Thanks much.

Altho csound originally came from *nix big-iron systems, most of the work
in the past 10 years or so is for other desktop boxes: Mac, DOS, Win95,
Next, ... The documentation for Mac has improved to now be moderately
intelligible.
The weakness of viable sound and midi apps has held us off a Linux
