After searching Redhat's hardware compatibility list, I found the
statement that drives larger than 33G are not supported.
I just got RH 6.2 and installed it... works fine!!!

I'd probably use --replacefiles or something like that. I've never
seen the install of an RPM scre anything up, though I'm sure it can
happen.

Hi,
I need to find out the equivalent sh (Bourn) script to mimic the C
language routine to do a "for" loop. For instance, in a C language,
given some integer variables i and lenght, one can print out the
incremental value of i as follows:
for (i=0;i<lenght;i++)
printf ("%d ", i);
Can anyone please tell me how to achieve such a thing in sh script that
will accept a parameter from the shell command and passes it to the
integer lenght to perform as shown on the above C program?
TIA.

I really don't use "productivity" <snicker> apps that much anyway. I
just bought it to support Corel.
Their first offering of a Linux distribution is *okay*, which is a lot
better than other distributions have fared on their initial attempt.
Their office suite is pretty bad right now, but they are pioneering
the tools which are needed to port Windows applications to native
Linux applications (without needing a new toolkit like Qt or
Wxwindows).

Many old DOS disks were protected by changing the placement of sectors
and writting bad sectors. To copy these diskettes you need to copy
the
tracks exactly as is, including gaps, sector sizes and errors.

The easiest would be to use a NULL Modem cable and just
use any terminal emulator on each end that understands
the same protocols(e.g. zmodem, ymodem etc..)
You upload on one program while downloading on the other.
(If they bother understand zmodem then when you send
from one the other program should automatically start
receiving.)
These days NULL Modem cables are easier to find, like
at Comp Usa or some similar place, but if you can't find
one, you can get a couple of adapters at Radio Shack to
stick on the end of a standard serial cable to swap the
lines and convert it to NULL Modem.
Good luck. :)

Thanks for the info but you misunderstood my question. The preferences
do allow you to control the foreground and background colors but only
in a global sense. I want to be able to set the color for individual
words and/or sentences. For example, my background color is black and
my foreground color is white. I want to be able to echo text to the
terminal and have it shown in yellow to make it stand out...independent
of the foreground color.
I do not want all text to be shown as yellow only selected text. Is this
possible?

It's slightly difficult to use a counter. But you want something like
i=0
while [ $i -lt $length ]; do
echo $i
i=$[ $i + 1 ]

Subject: Creating a new filesystem in a new partition
Date: Thu, 06 Apr 2000 12:09:59 -0500
Greetings all,
I have 3 gigs of freespace on my 12 gig HD. I would like to
partition this space and make it available to both my Red Hat 6.1 OS and
my Win98 OS. Therefore, it has to be a FAT32 filesystem. I can't use
fdisk in windows to do this because it doesn't recognize linux. In
other words, windoze fdisk shows 5 gigs of free space when this is
definately not true, linux is taking up 2 gigs. I don't want to use the
win fdisk in fear of it screwing up my linux system. Cfdisk in linux
shows the proper HD setup with the correct amount of freespace, so I
would like to use this program. My question, however, is which type of
filesystem should I format the drive in?..it doesn't seem to write
FAT32 filesystems, only FAT16 versions. Can I choose any FAT16 version
and write that filesystem so that windoze recongnizes it, and then
reformat the partition (new win drive) into a FAT32 from inside windoze?
How should I go about accomplishing this task without screwing anything
up? Any help is greatly appreciated.
I thank everyone who helps in advance = )

Linux accepts spaces in filenames. You just need to use the escape
character.
Try this in your home directory, and you'll get the idea.
touch this\ filename\ contains\ spaces
ls
You'll notice that you have a new file called
'this filename contains spaces'
Simple, when you know how.
If you want to access such a file, just type the first few letters and use
TAB completion.
e.g.
'more this<TAB>' will expand to 'more this\ filename\ contains\ spaces'
(without the quotes of course)

gtk and glib 1.2.6, enlightenment-0.16.3-2, and Eterm-0.8.10.
I cannot seem to get Eterm to keep setting changes. As a
user, I cannot change anything permanently due to permissions
on, it seems, a config file called "MAIN". I have logged in
as superuser and tried changing settings permanently (like
background image, font and window size). The ONLY setting
that sticks is the background image. Starting Eterm as root
or user still has it starting small with small fonts, though
the background image is what I wanted.
I have also tried giving myself permission to write to MAIN
but this didn't change anything either. Background image gets
properly set but font and window size reverts to tiny with each
new startup of Eterm.
What does one have to do to force Eterm to accept a font and
window size change? It doesn't appear to use the standard
config file method (no .eterm file for each user, no .main
file for each user...just a system-wide config file that wont
accept permanent changes in certain aspects of Eterm).
Please help me out here.

I forgot to add my other "problem". Besides not being able

Or something like command not found. As superuser, I do not

Can someone help me please.
I am a newbie to linux. Having installed mandrake 7.0 on Tuesday.
(using KDE) I have managed to get all of my hardware working except for
my Hauppauge PCI TV card (mono, teletext, no radio version). (with a
voodoo3 2000 PCI)
I have downloaded both the bttv and xawtv from the site. However the
install notes are not clear. (I wish all install notes were like those
with xchat, step by step console commands...)
After tar them, I can't ./configure or gmake or make them. ./configure
doesn't exist, and I get error reports for the make commands.
Can someone please help me. As the TV drivers for win2K are worse than
useless, and I was hoping that linux would/could do it better.
I can't seem to find any decent documentation regarding this issue.
Any help would be appreciated, and the simpler the better.
Thanks in advance..
(PS. Is licq compatible with ICQ? ie. can I see my contacts from my win
ICQ list...)

Subject: how projects within linux commnunity work?
Date: Thu, 06 Apr 2000 18:22:38 GMT
Dear Ma'am/Sir:
Our group is researching the topic of "How projects within the Linux
community work".
It seems to us that every project is done by volunteers throughout the
world.
However, there are many questions that remain.
1. who initiates it, and how is it initiated?
a. who organizes?
b. how are projects distributed such that it is possible for each
volunteer to work individually?
i. without extensive background information
ii. without physical presence
2. resources
a. finance
i. donations
ii. government funding
iii. how are funds allocated
b. location
c. monitoring/maintenance
i. who is responsible for keeping track of the phases of the
project?
ii. how do you motivate volunteers?(rewards, recognition)
d. human resources
i. how do you recruit or advertise?
3. structure of the organization
a. how are organizational positions selected?
4. communication issues
a. frequency and amount of correspondence during a project
b. periodic conventions or meetings of members
5. the efficiency and quality of the volunteers
a. relative length and quality of project compared to profit driven
organizations
b. verification of ability and qualifications of potential volunteers
c. training of volunteers
Could you please give us some information on these topics or any others
you may find important to the understanding of the orgainization? We
would appreciate any feedback whether it is direct answers or possible
locations where this information can be found.

Subject: kernel questions
In the kernel source, the "thread_struct" reflects has values that
reflect the computers registers. One of these values is "eip", which is
the value for the instruction pointer. Does anyone one know what level
of the page tables (x86 architecture) this value refers to (pte, pmd,
pgd)? Also, a way that I can resolve this value to find what
"vm_area_struct" references this portion of memory for the specific
process?
Thank you so much,
Doug
