1GB FAT for C: (to exchange files with Linux)
2GB NTFS for D:
128MB for swap
3GB for / (root)
I also attached a document describing it in greater detail. Sorry for

Subject: Help Installing Star Office
Date: Wed, 19 Apr 2000 23:21:51 GMT
I'm having some difficulty and would appreciate some advice with
installation of Star Office. Here is some info and what I've tried so far:
System:
PII 450
128mb ram
Dual-boot using Partition Magic:
Windows 98
Linux 6.0
StarOffice for Linux is on a CD that came with the Star Office for Linux
Bible by IDG books. The CD contains several utilities as .tar files.
I have viewed the files using windows on my e:/ drive and among others they
include:
e:/Internet/communicator-47-export.x86-unknown-linux2.0.tar
I boot to Linux and open xterm and then from root I mount the CD Rom.
The install instructions in the book says to:
Open another terminal window and unpack the files with the command: tar xvf
access_path_and_name_of_the_archive
I tried this from the root prompt but perhaps I'm not getting the string
correct after "xvf"
Somehow, I'm just not getting to the files on the cdrom. Any and all
suggesstions will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Robert

I don't think there is. The ---linux.--- file contains file information that
DOS does not use, such as permissions, file owner and group, and long names.
I'm pretty sure you can zip or unzip an entire directory, including the
---linux.--- file, under either Linux or DOS.

What version of XMMS are you using? Old versions (pre 1.0) had a freezing problem. Goto
http://www.xmms.org and get version 1.01. That fixed the problem for me. Or you
could goto www.freeamp.org and get that player. IMO iti is better becaus it more
light weight (and faster) and has a great play list.

Where you will be promptly informed that comp.lang.perl hasn't been a
legit newsgroup in a long time and perhaps you mean comp.lang.perl.misc?
perldoc is not the best program in the world, but it does do nice
things like let you search the FAQ. ('perldoc --help' for usage.)
Ideally, of course, you don't need a different program for docs
for each package, which is the main drawback of perldoc.

| I'm not misleading anyone. The patent is not the same. It
| requires a surface with contrasting colors, ala an optical mouse
| pad. A wood grain surface works as well (ever used an optical
| mouse on a wood grained surface? You'll be surprised to see that
| it works fairly well)
The patent's background section specifically contrasts the invention
to other optical mice of the time, which used a special pattern on
the pad.
| A wood grained surface has edges which are of very differing
| contrasts.
Perhaps you missed the part where it says it 'can operate on
virtually any planar imperfect surface'.
| Clearly a mirror is not such a surface. Additionally, the
| Microsoft mouse works on my monochromatic red mousepad.
A mirror is a planar imperfect surface.
A monochromatic red mousepad is a planar imperfect surface.
The Microsoft mouse has what, 100,000 times more sensors and samples
at 100 times the speed? Of course it will work better on surfaces
without much contrast. But it's not a new idea.

It's all a question of resolution. At what level of detail is your optical
mouse going to analyze the surface?
Microsoft did not come up with the idea, but they did make it work at an
affordable price - 15 years after the invention. In my opinion this does
not qualify as innovation. It does say some good things about Microsoft,
but not about their ability to innovate.

should be:

If you system does not have the useradd/userdel/usermod family of utilities,
you can achieve the same thing with:
vipw /etc/passwd

Cron (Dillon's cron) only sets HOME USER and SHELL. You need to set
anything else yourself. One way to do this is to have the crontab
run a shell script, and have the shell script set things like PATH
at the top (export PATH=...), before it runs whatever command you wanted.

Everything you need is in the D series you downloaded. They are already
built for you: gcc, make, etc. All you have to do is install it. You can
use individual "installpkg package.tgz" commands to install one package at
a time, or you can use "pkgtool", or you can even use "setup" like at
install time. Using "setup" may be easiest.

Yes. It comes with the server edition of WP (note: NOT the normal retail
version, the server version). I don't know offhand where you might be
able to get it, though. I suspect it's been removed from the 9.0 release,
so you'll need 8.0 or earlier.

Indelible Blue offers them, but I think they are the only ones. IBM
has not been good to them, either, but they persevere.

Subject: Trouble with the Korn Shell
Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2000 01:04:09 GMT
Hello. I'm new to linux and have recently installed RedHat 6.0. I want
to use the Korn shell rather than Bash. I made the appropriate change
in the X-Windows Control Panel, and now I boot into Korn shell but I'm
having a problem. When I start an xterm session while I'm in X-Windows
my BACKSPACE and ARROW keys aren't working. When I hit BACKSPACE for
instance I see 'CTRL-H'. This only happens if I'm in an xterm window.
If I boot the computer and I'm at the raw command line, the directional
keys work fine. Also, on a related (maybe) note, shouldn't I have a
.profile file in my home directory which Korn shell reads when it starts
up? Anyway, sorry for the rambling, but this problem is driving me nuts
and I'm sure it has a simple solution. Thanks in advance for any help
you can offer.

A glass surface has lots of lines in it. Small cracks, pits, and
normally a thin coat of oil or soap causing defraction lines. Just
because you don't see/notice them doesn't mean they aren't there. Moving
a monochromatic light over a glass surface will create moving defraction
patterns that can be detected easily. Unless the surface is flat to
1/128 wavelength and specially coated and cleaned.
With today's computing power, that is easily possible. I'm just
interested that someone would put it in a mouse. How much do those
things cost? More than the $3 I paid for my last mouse?

I am using Red Hat 6.1 and trying every 'Fn' combination. Try Fn+F5
you'll see screen zoom in or toggle to zoom out. It's a weird laptop
without even any control for brightless. :-(

USR publishes on their web pages complete manuals for a lot of their

Hi All,
I've been looking around for a sample smail config file and
haven't had any luck. I need to allow remote users to use my
linux box as a their smtp transport and am having trouble
figuring it out. I had to rebuild server over the weekend and
am new to linux and my users want to shoot me. Any suggestions
would be appreciated. Thanks!!!
