Hi,

I am having a problem with the logging into the linux server. I was
working fine, but since today morning it is not allowing any of the user
ID's to login.

I am using RedHat linux 6.2. If i go into /etc/passwd file and remove the
Passwd option then without password all the users are able to login.

Can anyone tell what is stopping the machine from logging in with the
password.

Regards,

different between Linux Red Hat 6.0 & 6.1, Suse Linux 6.1, Linux Mandrake
7.0, Corel Linux and Win Linux 2000. is there anybody out there whose can
explain to me whats the different and which one to use i also notice that
some of the above Os have different amount of CD's, as little as 1 to as

rpm -Uvh something.src.rpm
cd /usr/src/redhat/SPECS
rpm -bb something.spec
[crunch crunch crunch]
cd ../RPMS
rpm -Uvh something.rpm

This is for redhat rpm (redhat package manager). First rpm installs the
source, second one patches, compiles, links, builds binary rpm, third one
installs the newly created binary rpm.

Hi all

Is it possible to create an Acrobat PDF file in linux?

I am asking this as I was wondering whether I need to buy Acrobat 4.0 for
<shudder> windopes to create them?

I would be writing documents in staroffice most probably, but I will be burning
the doc onto a CD for reading under linux and <shudder> windopes.

Any help would be appreciated.

there's linux on a floppy, and the linux router project to name but two.

try www.linuxrouter.org (i think)

or even freshmeat.net and have a trawl around there.

easy, just format a filesystem onto hdc, and then mount it as a volume onto
your main HD, here's mine

/dev/hda3 on / type ext2 (rw)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
/dev/hda1 on /boot type ext2 (rw)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=0620)
/dev/hda4 on /u type ext2 (rw)
/dev/sda1 on /mnt/jaz type vfat (rw,gid-500)

I think you could check if the whole login sequence is still in order:

Also, are there any diagnostics in /var/log/mdessages?

It is all a matter of taste. RedHat is generally considered more appropriate
for technical skilled people, and SuSE for not so technically skilled ones.
What is a fact is that SuSE comes with the largest distribution. (you decide
if that is a pro or a con) The others I don't have experienc with.

Just pick one (the cheapest?) and see if you like it or need to change...

Well, I only know French, English, German, C, Java, Lisp, Scheme, HTML,

First and foremost: Get a copy of the latest Kernel in RPM form from a
linux mirror.

Do a rpm -U --nodeps <kernel.rpm>
Then...edit /etc/lilo.conf to point to the newley installed kernel
Then run /bin/lilo to load the kernel into the bootloader
Reboot

This should fix all your lan and kernel problems.

Find out from xfree86.org what version of the x binary to use for your
video card and install that

Then use the XConfigurator to point to that binary. Once you do that and
test the X server...make sure that you have the screen resolution set to i
BELIEVE 1024x768....otherwise your laptop screen might come out a little
screwed up. Let me know if you need anything. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This happened to be once; I think that the kernel's arp cache is
overflowing.

I solved the problem by separating the two ethernets the two NICs
were connected to. I'm not sure how much that would help you,
though.

The Mandrake-Linux 7.0-2 distro (note that the '-2' is a bug-fixed iso)
is also good for non-technical people, such as me, for instance. I found
the install to be a breeze. As well, their Netscape package (4.70) is
pretty stable; I've yet to experience a crash with it, even with java
and javascript turned on, which often causes problems on other distros.

If you're like me, a cheap bastard :), you can ask a friend to use
his/her high speed connection to download the iso image and burn it unto
a CD, or get a copy somewhere, cheap. You don't have to spend big bucks
to get it; after all, it *is* Linux. All in all, they have a good distro
for beginners or non-technical people.

I have a Yamaha card in my Panasonic laptop and it isn't supported, but the
commercial driver from OSS (www.opensound.com) installed effortless and
works flawlessly. As I remember the license was $25 plus $10 for the
specific driver.

I use e2compression, and it works extremely well, haven't had a single
problem (as far as I am aware), and the performance doesn't suffer
(much).

Just have to add something, in order to avoid confusion:
In a german linux group I mentioned serious and repeated file system
crashes that I suffered from in the past, but this was with an older
kernel and *without* e2compression.

At present, I use kernel 2.0.36 and e2compression, under these
circumstances I never had problems with file system disasters, and
e2compression saves quite a lot of disk space.
Don't forget to compile in the kernel "indirect cluster bitmap" (if I
remember correctly the term), or you won't be able to compress larger
files.
