Hi,
if you have multiple hd's or a fd under your harddisk, remove it and place it
as far away from the hd as possible. I also have a 7200rpm disk (WD) which is
extremely hot, but giving it some space really helps. If the disk still is too
hot, try placing a hd-fan under it (approx $20).

With kind regards,

My memory has failed me and they seem to have changed "patch".

On patching the kernel with Hedrick's ide patch for ATA66 controllers, I
can't get it to work as apparently I've forgotten the syntax or else
something has changed in going from Slackware 4 to 7.

In any event, I have the archive for the patch I want to apply to kernel
2.2.14. Since I couldn't start with a fresh kernel source, I simply
copied my old tree into /usr/src/ and compiled again.

But anyway, can someone tell me the correct syntax for patching the
kernel tree and what directory to place the patch in. All my attempts
end in "What do you want to patch" or something similar.

Thanx...

Hi I'm relatively new to linux , and I've been trying to install redhat

6.2 on my laptop...everything starts up ok BUT when it comes to
checking the module dependencies on start-up it says something like
'Detecting sound module (maestro)' and then just stalls and nothing
responds not even the keyboard...My friend has exactly the same comp. as

me and had no probs in the installation......

Does anyone have any clues??

Thank you for your time

Windows doesn`t give much scope for hacks. What hacks are you after?

Well Copy and Paste is available in explorer via the icons on toolbar and if
you select files you can press right mouse
button to copy, cut and paste.

Make and C compiler in Linux is usually GCC (GNC C Compiler), you need to
install the binaries to have access to them. You will only need them if you
only
have access to source files to make them into binaries.
Check for files on the CD such as:

ecgs-1.1.2-12.i386.rpm
ecgs-c++-1.1.2-12.i386.rpm

Should help to get C/C++ compiler installed

from the kernel HOWTO...

5.1 Applying a patch

Incremental upgrades of the kernel are distributed as patches. For
example, if you have
version 1.1.45, and you notice that there's a `patch46.gz' out there for
it, it means you can
upgrade to version 1.1.46 through application of the patch. You might
want to make a backup
of the source tree first (`make clean' and then `cd /usr/src; tar zcvf
old-tree.tar.gz linux' will make a compressed tar archive for you.).

So, continuing with the example above, let's suppose that you have
`patch46.gz' in
/usr/src. cd to /usr/src and do a `zcat patch46.gz | patch -p0' (or
`patch -p0 <
patch46' if the patch isn't compressed). You'll see things whizz by (or
flutter by, if your
system is that slow) telling you that it is trying to apply hunks, and
whether it succeeds or not.
Usually, this action goes by too quickly for you to read, and you're not
too sure whether it
worked or not, so you might want to use the -s flag to patch, which
tells patch to only report
error messages (you don't get as much of the ``hey, my computer is
actually doing
something for a change!'' feeling, but you may prefer this..). To look
for parts which might not
have gone smoothly, cd to /usr/src/linux and look for files with a .rej
extension. Some
versions of patch (older versions which may have been compiled with on
an inferior
filesystem) leave the rejects with a # extension. You can use `find' to
look for you;

find . -name '*.rej' -print

prints all files who live in the current directory or any subdirectories
with a .rej extension to
the standard output.

If everything went right, do a `make clean', `config', and `dep' as
described in sections 3
and 4.

There are quite a few options to the patch command. As mentioned above,
patch -s will
suppress all messages except the errors. If you keep your kernel source
in some other place
than /usr/src/linux, patch -p1 (in that directory) will patch things
cleanly. Other patch
options are well-documented in the manual page.

Onboard devices typically have a section in the BIOS where you can change
their configuration.

Over-clocking is always dangerous, but unrelated to your situation.

Any HDD over 6GiB is reccomended to sit in a 5 1/4" bay with a HDD cooling
unit. HDD coolers are relatively inexpensive, and could save you lots of
trouble and expense somewhere down the road.

The problem with \w is that it abbreviates any directory, so
you may not know if you're in /bin or /usr/bin or /usr/X11R6/bin...

The other problem is that you may need to switch to a korn shell
(I occasionally do), which does not recognize bash-specific features.
Using $PWD is transparent to both. (I also create a HOST variable,
and use $HOST in the prompt as well.) If you operate in directories
with long pathnames, you can always include a newline in the prompt.

I am having a similar problem. I was able to boot Redhat 6.1, but I changed
CPU's from and Intel DX2 @ 50MHZ to a IBM/CYRIX DX4 @ 100MHZ and now
magically I have this same problem, including the "crc" and the "invalid
compression format". If I switch back to the Intel, its no problem to boot.
Doses anybody have a clue? Is it possibly a problem with A20 line and the
Cyrix?

Are you overclocking just the cpu, or the bus also? Hotness (more than usual) from
external
(HD,video, etc) components isn't odd. If you want to continue the way you are they're
fans
specifically made to suck air over the HDs, as well as other components.

Your overclocking the mobo has absolutely nothing to do with how hot the
HD runs unless the heat from the mobo is being directed at it, but what
you say certainly does seem excessive. IMO a fan on that drive is in
order, as is a trip to the store to see if the tech reports that they
all run that hot.

Cheers, Gene

When I'm using most Linux distributions I'm given a core dump whenever

However when using Slackware 7.0 every time I get a segmentation fault I
