Perhaps he's looking for syslog(3) functionality which would let him
send messages from his script or program to a log file and the console.
But you're right, his post is quite contradictory.

I have no idea if anyone has a use for them, but I've fixed a couple
of problems that I've encountered with RedHat6.2 (Linux 2.2.14).

There were some problems with the eepro100 (Intel EtherPro) driver
that I fixed by backporting fixes from the newer driver for 2.4.n.

I also bumped into a semop(2) problem that didn't occur in Linux 2.0.36,
that I fixed by porting the older ipc/sem.c out of 2.0.36 into 2.2.14.
(The comment at the beginning of sem.c mentions the bug being fixed in
1995, but it appears that it was re-broken by the changes done in 1998.)

Anyhow, if anyone is interested, the modified source files are available
via anonymous ftp from snowhite.cis.uoguelph.ca in pub/hp-pc/x-class.

Good luck if you choose to use them, rick

CheapBytes sells a disk called "Stampede Linux with Tiny Linux". I've

Has anyone out there used NetApps filers with Oracle on Linux? I've seen case studies
on the NetApps website showing how they work with Oracle, but I'd like some more
details.

I've always heard that databases prefer raw block I/O so they can set up what's
essentially their own file system, but the NetApps box serves files, not blocks.

Anyone have any insight on how this works?

I have two SCSI disk drives that I cannot start and have software recognize.
I would like to pose a question about DATA RECOVERY, but not sure what
newsgroup would be most appropriate.

The drives are Micropolis 4.3 Gig SCSI. They will spin up, make some noise,
and after a minute or two, spin-down and the light blinks. I have tried to
get them recognized using "Lost and Found" software from Power Quest to no
avail.

I would like to know more about my options.

Thanks,

Many command names are supported internally to sash preceded by a - sign.
"-ls -l" for example.

If you can mount your CD and use rpm to reinstall the libc package you
ought to be back in business. rpm on my box is statically linked.

If you have sash you might not need the rescue disk.

Subject: Re: audio CD's
Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2001 23:38:08 GMT

Fixed it, it was rather simple, but took awhile to find an answer.

Delete all sound and midi lines from modules.conf, then Rerun sndconfig like
this.

sndconfig -0-noprobe --noautoconfig

select Sound Blaster with io=220, irq=5, dma=1.

Everything works now. Sound, midi, cd player.

modules.conf file looks like this now:

alias sound-slot-0 sb
options sound dmabuf=1
alias midi opl3
options opl3 io=0x388
options sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1

======================================================

Windows has the midi as 0x300, tried that and got errors for midi at bootup.
So another fix on the net talking about basically the same thing, but
putting
cs4232 in place of sb (soundblaster), got the sound if I remember, but CD
audio
didn't work. So the above is the best option to set up the CS4236/37/38 that
uses
the CS4232 Codec.

Found this at http://www.linux.com/hardware/hdb.phtml?func=detail&id=88

I occasionally manipulate archived news spools. Sometimes the directories

I use a Creative Labs CD-RW that's IDE. You need to load the ide-scsi.o
module properly in order to burn CDs. It seems to work well, burning just
fine at 8x.

/usr/include/asm/errno.h:#define E2BIG 7 /* Arg list too long */

There will be a limit (a few thousand chars) on the total length of
arguments when a process is run.

On these occasions you can do several things:

"echo *" will work when "ls *" won't because echo is a shell builtin and so
does not require an exec().

xargs can split argument lists into smaller parts
   echo file_* | xargs -n50 -i{} mv -i {} /some/other/place
so that now mv only sees 52 arguments.

perl is extremely good - you can search (like grep) thousands of files
in a single process using a loop over the result of readdir.

A few ideas:

Play around with sync rates etc. until you find some that it will
accept. For a very generic 17" monitor I got at a discount store, in
my XF86Config file, I use:

HorizSync 30.0-70.0
VertRefresh 50.0-150.0

The normal warnings about monitor damage apply, but I've found that
many modern monitors will simply shut off when the sync is out of
range. Some will even switch to a safe mode and display their
acceptable sweep range on the screen. Come to think of it, I've seen
at least one that had a setup menu option that provided this info, you
might look to see if yours does.

On other systems, not only have I had to use the right vertical and
horizontal sweep rates (obvious), I've had to comment out modelines
that *ought* to have either worked or been ignored, leaving one that
will work.

It helps to set your default runlevel to 3 (non-graphic) while you are
testing, then you can use startx to start X and view any errors
directly on the screen when starting X.

Hello,

I have an old p200 that I want to make into a home theater box. I am
planning on putting it into a new low profile black desktop case. I would
use a cordless keyboard with integrated mouse to control the unit. I want
to use this machine to play MPEG's and MP3's through my home theater (all
legal of course).

It have an old 6mb Voodoo Rush video card with TV out. I know that the
Voodoo card will at least do 2D under linux. Is 640x480 the proper screen
resolution to use with TV-out?

Does soundblaster live perform well under linux? Any other sound cards that
you have had good luck with?

What do you think that the best MPEG player would be for this application (I
usually run redhat)?

Thanks in advance for your advice, and I will share results with the group.
Greg
