Subject: Problems with the sebang combo in any script file...
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Mitch Conant)
Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 03:10:51 GMT

Ok I give up (mostly in frustration), I've looked for useful
articles in the news groups, I've poured over the perlrun manpage...no
luck!

I am running Redhat Linux 6.2 (upgraded from 5.2) and it seems that the
#! combo as line 1 in a script file will not work. The same message
appears if I try to run a Perl or TCL script. I build a 1 line script
(the infamous print "Hello World" program) and it still bombs out.

The first line reads:

#! /usr/bin/perl

I have verified that perl is there ... YES
I can run Perl by typing perl anywhere ... Runs OK
I can run the script by using the perl -e commandline ... PERFECT

I CANNOT RUN THE SCRIPT WITH THE SHEBANG LINE!!! YES THE SCRIPT HAS THE
EXECUTE ATTRIBUTE SET!!!

Is there a Linux setting that has to be tweaked to allow shebang
processing?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Mitch

Different OSes for different needs--I've seen mathematicians wibble and
cringe at the mention of VMS, and there's no reason why VMS and Unix
can't coexist in some way. And as for the "help" thing:

fleabag$ help
[huge list of stuff that bash can do, not geared to newbies, but not
useless, either]
fleabag$ bash --version
GNU bash, version 2.03.0(1)-release (i386-suse-linux)
Copyright 1998 Free Software Foundation, Inc.

Certainly, this could be improved upon, but it doesn't return a nasty
error message either. Also, I've noticed that RedHat in its default
install mode starts up the GNOME help browser when you log in to X--not
exactly useless either. User-friendlyness takes a bit of time and
effort, and possibly a central controlling authority, which Linux the OS
(not the kernel) does not have....

> Her article has been reprinted recently, in a book (forthcoming?)
>called "The UNIX-haters handbook".

I believe that book has been out in some form for a while now. It
certainly contains valid points, since All Software Sucks and everything
can be improved. Heck, even Windows has its good points. (See
signature.)

>that I have experiences and memories enough to combat the god-awful

In any large group, there will be flamers and bigots. People get
attached to their tools and their ways of doing things, since it takes
effort to learn a new syntax/way of thought, and almost everyone doesn't
want to do that. Also, there seems to be a deep need in most people to
say, "There is One True Path, and I'm on it."

Yet in comp.os.linux.{misc,hardware}, I've seen 3 or 4 people genuinely
trying to help others for each knee-jerk flame. Usenet is composed of
people, and I try to think that most people are not fundamentally
a#$holes. Miscommunication happens, tempers flare. So we deal and move
on--what else can we do?

Unix/Linux/*BSD are still supposed to be about liberating users.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that they're helping that. Problem is,
forging your own path is tougher than following a road someone else has
built.... ergh, see the last few pages of Neal Stephenson's "In The
Beginning was the Command Line", as he said it much better than I can.

Finally, real change and progress tends to be a Sisyphean task. At
least in the Linux/Unix/*BSD world, you can help push the rock
uphill....

Hi Anna,

Firstly have a look at "/etc/inetd.conf" and look for a line that
starts with "ftp" - should be near the top. If it has "#" at the
beginning of it, ftp wont be possible INTO your machine.

Open you favourite text editor (eg "pico /etc/inetd.conf") as root and
uncomment the ftp line - remove the "#". Then
type "/etc/rc.d/init.d/inetd restart" as root without the "" and test :-
)

If that doesn't fix it - read the net3-howto (large but lots of good
info) or post what error messages you get on the users' side and
anything that looks significant in the "/var/tmp/messages" file.

Cheers,

James

You have a problem on eth1. Check your cable connection, and the cable
itself. If the cable is OK, you may have a bad NIC.

This machine has more than enough grunt to play MP3 files.

My guess is that the IDE driver is not optimised to get maximum
performance out of the drive. The "hdparam" program can be used
to fix this (bascially making sure DMA is used for data transfer
rather than the CPU). I use SCSI drives, so I'm not sure how to
use hdparam but I'm sure the man page is pretty good.

For Oracle8, it is a beta copy for linux.
I have not tried Oracle8i. You need lots of memory and plenty of

Oracle will not time out, but don't use it for any commercial purposes.

I have a CPU monitor running and I noticed that the loss of sound
occurs whenever the CPU meter spikes and that happens any time
something major graphically happens on the screen (could be
something as simple as scrolling in Netscape with my 32-bit color
screen). First of all, I thought the video cards today did most of
the graphic drawing work, not the CPU, so I don't understand the CPU
spike (unless the X-server I'm using doesn't make use of accelerated
functions on my Voodoo3 card or something). Secondly, I think this
may be a priority problem. The problem goes away selecting OSS and
REAL time priority. Unfortunately, it seems like OSS can't share
the sound device with more than one program so it causes problems if
something else tries to play a sound (e.g. gaim while I'm playing an
MP3). I found that if I run mpg123 from a shell using nice (e.g.
nice -0 mpg123 songname.mp3) that it doesn't skip. However, using
any kind of frontend (e.g. wmmp3) won't allow you to set the nice
paramater directly. Is there any other way to set priorities in
Linux?

As for CPU usage, my CPU meter shows a very neglibible use for the
MP3 players. They're not the problem. The problem is when
something else needs the CPU, it interrupts the sound player in the
process (i.e. sound playback should always have a higher priority
than drawing graphics). Unfortunately, I don't know of any way to
do this other than nice from the console. If someone does, let me
know.

Subject: CD Burning (HP 8210i) Problems
Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 02:28:50 -0400

I've been trying to burn some CDs under Linux with my HP 8210i CD-RW
drive. Linux recognizes the drive fine. I was using gnome-toaster
(gtoaster). I couldn't get it to extract and burn an audio CD. I
don't know what the files are it saved to my hard drive (supposed to
be wavs I think), but no program I tried recognized them as wav
files and they were called by numbers instead of names....weird.
Anyways, then the program gave me errors when I tried a dummy burn
and crashed soon after and I found it didn't have them stored when I
loaded it back up and it didn't recognize the cached files it
saved. Win98 didn't recognize those files as .wav files either or
any other kind of audio.

So, I thought I'd try to back up some data on a CD-RW disc. I took
one of my old backup CD-RW discs I used in Win98 (I recently backed
up the whole drive with a new set of discs, freeing up the old ones
since HP's software sucks and insists on reformatting already used
CD-RW discs (as in writing over top the old backups) with its backup
software at an hour a piece even though it doesn't do that for
unformatted discs!) Anyways, gnome-toaster seemed to clear the disc
ok (although I haven't looked at it in Windows yet). But I never
even got to the burning part because I couldn't get the stupid
program to behave properly. I wanted to back up my /home directory
(couple hundred megs) and I dragged it to the bottom pane and the
drive just kept going and going and going for like 20 minutes (the
hard drive...the CD drive wasn't doing anything at that point).

I watched as my memory/swap monitor went higher and higher (I have
288 MB of ram) and eventually maxed out and went to the swap drive
and I watched it as it filled halfway up and I eventually just got
tired of waiting and hit CTRL-C. I looked in my burn directory and
saw it had copied (why!?) the files (some anyways, about 128 Megs or
so) into the burn directory, thus duplicating files already on my
hard drive. This makes no sense to me (nor does it sucking up all
my memory). All it should do is put pointers to the files in
question in the list and copy them to the CD at burn time. Why is
it copying files to another directory on the hard drive? This
would be akin to ripping audio tracks to the hard drive and then
telling it to use store those files on the CD and it copies those
files to another directory on the hard drive....

Anyways, I never even got around to testing the burner with data
files because I just couldn't stand it anymore. It should not take
30-40 minutes to prep a drive BEFORE the burn with files already
stored on a hard drive (and duplicating them in the process, wasting
more hard drive space). I don't get it at all. Anyone have any
clue what gnome-toaster was up to?????

Is there any better software for this sort of thing? I don't fancy
using cd-record from the command line. A basic GUI would make this
so much easier. If Linux had proper support for UDF, then you could
just copy to CD-RW discs like a regular hard drive and life would be
so much simpler, but even then , I want to be able to burn audio CDs
without problems. Right now I have to do it all in Win98 still.
