Nope. We have it running on several Gateway Solos here.
Well, scratch that. We had to install a version that supported the
NeoMagic chipset. But aside from that, no worries.

Currently 3Dfx is the best supported
nVidia and ATi have DRI 3D support under development.
ATi Rage128 has partial 3D currently under XFree86 4.

First of all, you're going to catch a lot of heat for calling it
"Linex." It's "Linux," just like in the name of this newsgroup.
As for where you can get it, and which distribution ["flavour"] you
should use, that really depends. I assume you're new to Linux, so I
would suggest that you get a copy of it on CD-ROM. It'll be easier to
install.
As for which distribution, I would suggest that you go with Red Hat 6.2.
It may not be the best in some people's minds, but it has a very simple
graphical install routine, it's pretty up-to-date, and it's the most
popular distribution available. That doesn't make it the best, but it
does mean that it's the distribution that most people know, and it's
relatively easy to get 3rd-party software for it as pre-packaged
binaries.
You best bet, though, would be to got to LinuxMall
[http://www.linuxmall.com/] and take a look at what they have. The sell
CDs of the download versions of all the major Linux distributions for a
buck and have CDF collections of six or nine distributions for $10 and
$23, respectively.

two possibilities:
1) It's a PCI or ISA PnP modem - These aren't automatically supported, but
can be manually configured. For isa pnp modems, use the 'pnpdump' and
'isapnp' utilities. For PCI modems, use 'cat /proc/pci' to find the
interrupt and I/O address of your modem,. and then use 'setserial' to assign
a serial port to it.
2) Its a winmodem, and you're SOL - buy a new modem

...Exactly why I posted the requirement. I have to design forums on a web

for now based on mgmt preferences.

Hmmmm... Here's a little trick so you can find out *if* it is
run at boot time:
move the file /sbin/ldconfig to /sbin/myldconfig, and write a
little script called /sbin/ldconfig (set permissions to rwx).
#!/bin/bash
printf "\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n LDCONFIG HAS BEEN STARTED\n\n\n\n\n\n"
/sbin/myldconfig
exit 0
This'll give you a message on the screen if ldconfig is started.

Greetings group,
I'm running 128MB of RAM yet according to free it shows only 64MB.
Normally I would go into /etc/lilo.conf and add the option mem=128m only
this will not take. I run the lilo command after I add it and it claims
it as a syntactic error. I'm typing it verbatim from Matt Welsh's
Running Linux but it won't take. The distro is RH6.1 w/ a 2.2.12 kernel.
I shouldn't even be having this problem yet I am. Is there an

The correct syntax for /etc/lilo.conf is:
append="mem=128M"
Then run /sbin/lilo.

The 1.2M drives step twice for each track when mounted as /dev/fd0h360.
I use this mode to transfer files from some of my 8-bit CP/M systems
operating a program which allows them to read and write DOS-formatted
360k diskettes. The problem with interchangeability relates to the fact
that 1.2M (and dos 720k drives) have twice as many tracks as a true 360k
drive, so the best (and only reliable) way to make the procedure work is
bulk-erase the diskettes, then format them in a 720 or 1.2M drive as
360k diskettes, then NEVER write to the disk in a true 360k drive,
otherwise the latter write will smear a track twice as wide as the
higher drives, and any subsequent writes to that sector will, at best,
be erratic.

Evidently. I tried to run e2fsck. What a mess. I got locked in some

Nothing like starting a new life, eh? It seems almost incredible to me
that an operating system used on a scale that Linux is being used could
