Bad move. Your rpm database will still show 4.75 installed
but the file attributes won't match. (Which may or may not
matter but if you install software outside rpm it makes it harder
to upgrade and impossible to keep track of what's installed
and what versions).
Better would be to get the src rpm from the RH 7.0 distribution.
Install that. cd /usr/src/redhat/SPECS. Edit netscape.spec and
change all references to 75 in the spec file to 76. Rebuild the
binary rpm with `rpm -bb --clean netscape.spec' and upgrade
to the new version with `rpm -Fvh ../RPMS/i386/netscape*-4.76*'.

Hi
Will Linux read CDROM's in Joliet CD file format? I wish to burn a CD w/ Adaptec EZCD
Creator in Win98,
my only file format choices are either Joliet or ISO9660. I know ISO9660 is compatible
but I wish to keep long
file names, and Rock Ridge is not an available option.

Hi,
Yes, I am running an SMP machine. I tried booting in linux-up (losing
one CPU), but when I run "amixer", I get the same error: "The ALSA sound
driver was not detected in this system." as with other kernels.
BTW, are there sound cards supported by SMP kernels? I should probably
demand that Dell people send me a new sound card (they sold us this
pre-installed Linux box)
Thanks!

Check out the kernel source - the latest kernel includes CONFIG_JOLIET
which enables support for MS Joliet CD-ROM extensions. So in short yes,
just compile it in if it's not already. :)

Linux has been able to read Joliet extensions for quite a while now.
What made you think that it couldn't? It's possible to add Joliet
extensions to an ISO9660 image with the -J option to mkisofs, and
mkisofs will even let you create an image with both Joliet and Rockridge
extensions if you pass it the -J and -r options.

Subject: Getty disables 'shutdown -r now': a strange problem
Date: Fri, 10 Nov 2000 02:16:43 GMT
I run into a strange problem when using getty.
In order to connect a serial console to COM2
on my Linux box A (/dev/ttyS1), I added a entry
7:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty ttyS1 9600 vt100
to /etc/inittab.
There was no problem to set up the serial console.
(I used minicom on another Linux box.)
However I got 2 problems:
(1) I keep getting 'getty respawning too fast, disable
for 5 mintues'
(2) When I telnet onto my Linux box A and then
use 'shutdown -r now' to reboot it, it doesn't
take effect if I disconnected the serial cable from the
serial port. The runlevel did change to 6, because
'runlevel' returns '3 6'. I can still do anything
from the telnet session. 'shutdown -r now' seems
to be ignored except the runlevel changed to 6.
Strangely, if I put the serial cable back to the
serial port, from the serial console, you can see
the system started to reboot:
"Stopping the keytable... [OK]"...
I don't have this problem if I did not add the entry
in /etc/inittab. Telneting onto the box A and 'shutdown -r now'
worked just fine.
Anybody has hint for this ?
Thanks in advance.

Save it to something like /usr/local/bin/disabled and set a user's account

I downloaded Mandrake 7.2 and installed it fairly flawlessly to a PIII 600mz
128 mb PC
I want to use it is as a Mail server for a workgroup of 20 MS win98 machines
(school project). I am able to send mail between the machines through the
M7.2 Linux box. I have one problem.
First here are the points
1) I presently have Postfix running on the machine. but can switch to
Sendmail.
2) I have setup outlook express on each win98 machine
The problem is when I send mail between the machines, outlook express first
says connecting, then authorizing in which then it waits alone time
authorizing sometime as much as a minute then the mail goes through. (The
problems is its spends a long time authorizing but still works)
Users shouldn't have to wait a minute for their e-mail to send.
Has anyone had this problem?
any suggestions?
Thanks

Hello,
What model card do you have? Some have a shared analog/digital outputs
which aren't support yet. If you have digital speakers this may be your
problem.
So far that we know of, these models are have these types of outputs:
-SBlive cards shipping with Gateway computers
-All 5.1 cards
do we need to add Dell?

if /usr/sbin/ppp-on; then
$slrnpull -d $dir -h $server
/usr/sbin/ppp-off
else
exit 1

====================End========================
I ran the above script from cron once a day to get newsgroup
postings. In your /etc/ppp/ip-up script, you could run
fetchmail to grab your email when the above script runs.
If you have demand dialing setup, then you could run the
fetchmail command from cron and when it runs, it would bring
the connection up for you. There are several ways to do
what you want.

Hmm...
That does not look like copy protection.
It might just be a bad floppy. Looks like just the end of
the floppy is bad.
Can you mount it?
If you are lucky, there is no data within the bad area.
It might be possible to copy the files onto a fresh floppy.
If it was a bootable floppy you may have to use dd to copy
just the first sector (the bootsector) over too.

Peter, dogma aside, everyone is different from everyone else - and that's
okay. There really is no "right way" that fits everyone. For _some_ folks,
a GUI interface is the best introduction to Linux. Some may never even
"graduate" to a CLI. Linux accommodate all types. Linux is about _choice_,
not dogmatic and rigid answers.

Subject: Re: Making Boot Disk
Date: 10 Nov 2000 03:23:54 GMT
I ran into this problem several times before I finally figured out what
was happening. I was using a different distribution, but that's not
part of the issue.
When a kernel is created, it has some default values built into it. The
kernel can be loaded several different ways. One way is to write it in
binary mode to a floppy diskette. Another is to use a boot loader. The
boot loader allows you to choose what partition you are going to boot
and, if it's a good boot loader, like "lilo", will also allow you to
pass override parameters to the kernel.
Regardless of how the kernel is loaded, it has to know what device has
the root file system on it. Linux, like all *nix, has a single-rooted
file heirarchy. In DOS, you have drive A:, B:, ... Z: each of which
has its own root directory.
In Linux, there's only one "root directory". It's on the root device.
Various physical disks are grafted into a directory tree
at mount points. But the tree has to have a root somewhere. What's
happening with the kernel panic, is that the kernel is getting loaded
from the floppy, and it thinks the root directory (root device) is
supposed to be /dev/hda20 (3:20 = hda20?). When the kernel goes out
to mount the root file system, it doesn't find the root file system
(root directory) it wants and it goes into a "panic".
What you need to do now is to override the default setting in the
kernel so that it expects to find the root file system on the actual
device where you installed the root file system. Either that, or you
need to use a boot loader that allows you to pass parameters to the
kernel. Kernel parameters passed this way will override the default
parameters in the kernel. You can tell your boot loader to ignore the
root device pointed to by the kernel, and
to use the file system on /dev/hdb5. It will be
quite happy. Or you can boot with a kernel that has /dev/hdb5 set
for its default.
I don't know much about NT, but from what I've read, you can use
NT loader to boot Linux as well as NT. That would allow you to have
a boot menu started from the hard drive. Pretty nice, useable
solution. To make it work smoothest, modify the kernel to look for
the root file system on /dev/hdb5. That doesn't take a recompile.
There's a utility called "rdev" that changes the root device
pointer in the kernel. There are a couple other items you can
change in the kernel using this utility, so I recommend you use
"man rdev" to get the low-down on it.
Once you've used rdev to modify the root device pointer in the
kernel, you won't get kernel panic anymore. You will also want to
consider swapdev, etc. ("man rdev" explains this) and the other
kernel settings. With the proper minor adjustments, you will be
able to boot using any of the popular methods. (NT boot loader,
floppy with raw kernel, floppy with lilo, OS2 loader, loadlin, ...)
If you like booting from a floppy, you might consider installing
just the lilo boot loader on the floppy. It takes only a second to
load. Much faster than the 10-20 seconds it takes to load the
entire kernel from a floppy.
Good luck.

I had no choice but to use that because SuSE or RedHat didn't have a US
version of it.
I use SuSE 7.0 and they now have a US 128 bit encription version. I find it to
be very stable. The version that came with the CD was a non US version and
was very buggy, it crashed just as well as the one that came with Mandrake 7.0
By using the tar version you are screwing up your rpm data base. This was a
bad move on your part.
