But why is kudzu segfaulting? What could cause it to crash like that,
just from changing kernels? I can disable it easily enough, but i'm
just curious why it isn't working.

As this was cross-posted to c.o.l.powerpc, I have to ask -- are PPC
binaries (or better yet, source) available for TopPage?

The cross-platform promise of Linux cannot be fulfilled unless the
applications are also cross-platform.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Greetings,

I'm having difficulty with installing Red Hat 6.1 on an old i486
machine. I recently installed a SMC ethernet card and a CD ROM on a
computer with a i486 processor, 2 GB HD, and 8 MB of RAM. The HD had
Windows 95 on it, but I fdisked it and erased the whole thing (this
machine is old and intended for me to experiment with and beat on, so
any mistake is just a learning experience, nothing to freak out over).
I then tried install Linux by booting the system with an install disk
and then installing from CD. The first thing the install program asks
me to do is insert 'the driver disk.'...it proceeds to tell me that
there are 'no special drivers' installed and then asks if I 'would I
like to install them now.' If I say yes, then it asks if I want to
install SCSI or network. Since this is IDE and not SCSI, I select
network (thinking it wants me to choose drivers for the network card I
installed) and then try to pick the closest selection to my network
card. However, no matter what SMC version I select, Linux install does
nothing.
I've installed the same version of Linux on my main computer before
(a dual boot win98/Linux Dell) and it never asked for any drivers at the
beginning of installation. My questions are: Why is the install
asking for drivers right away when its working with a blank HD?
Shouldn't it ask for drivers later? After it has at least set up the
partitions and probed my hardware... How can I surpass this problem and
install Linux? Should I remove the network card and re-install it later,
after I get Linux set-up? Any help with the problem is very much
appreciated.

Thanks in advance to all those who reply.

I've seen bad clients/servers corrupt the mailbox file to where it was
unuseable by the server, and only rm'ing the file would work. One more
reason why qmail rules. : )

well, I tried
1/ ifdown , ifup
2/ ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.1
3/ ifconfig eth0 up
4/ S10network stop | start | restart | reload
ALL fail to work, it seems the Redhat 6.2 locked up the interface(with
no error message) and don't let it communicate to other host
anymore. : (

I searched the ipchain rules but it seems just like default ACCEPT ALL.

I have been spended too long on this problem. I dicided to forward this
case to Redhat INC and let them solve it.

Frames? Don't.

I won't repeat the WYSIWYG debate here, except to stress that you can't
count on *anyone* seeing the same thing you do.

Anyway, have a look at Quanta <http://quanta.sourceforge.net/>. If it's
not completely WSYIWYG, it at least has a preview mode to let you see

Subject: Help with 'user', 'w', 'who' commands

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello,

I am having a strange problem with commands that are supposed to give me

info on users currently logged in on my linux box. For instance, when I
remotely connect to my linux machine while another user is logged in on
tty1, I'll run the 'users','w', 'who', etc. command to see what they
say. In return I only get listings pertaining to my userid. The only
way that I know another user is logged in is because when I run a 'ps
-ef' I can see processes started by another individual and which are
related to X-Window. I guess my question is where do the 'users', etc.
commands get their info from (/etc/passwd?)? Are there any adjustments
that I can make to a particular file in order to get these commands to
work properly? Why are they not working? Also, when I issue the 'talk'

command to another user on the same machine, I get an error message.
I'm assuming that this is because Linux, for some reason, isn't
recognizing the other userid (or could it be because the other user
doesn't have an X-term open?). Logging in as root and running 'users',
etc. doesn't help any. Nor do the man pages. Any help with this issue
is very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance to all who reply to this post.

I have Mandrake 7, but I have had to go through a lot of tortuous stuff to get
things working. It is not automated. On my machine supermount worked
for one drive but not for another. I removed it. Like you, I can't find any
documentation.
One problem I have with mandrake is that each time I boot up, it detects
the cdwriter (HP8100) but then tries to detect new hardware and tells me
that it has been removed from the system. If I ignore this, everyhting
seems to be OK, and the drive is detected correctly by cdrecord.

The real problem I had was in getting all the permissions sorted out.

Have you tried to uninstall it and then reinstall it to see if that

When it asks for the drivers disk just choose cancel. It should bypass

I had the same problem. Here's what I found.
You probably did the same thing I did. Followed the instructions.
You received a e-mail with your liscense number in it. That message is
important.
Reading everthing, what you do is install the main program and then create
the liscense file in your home directory.
If you're like me, that has to be root because you need to have unlimited
access to the install directories.
Note: the liscense will only take one user so I did it as root.
Anway, create the liscense and then install the remaining three packages.
It worked fine for me when I finally figured it out.

Not in the least. In fact, this will probably be the way to go for what
you seem to need. They're good cheap cards which will do the trick..

As for grabbing an image 2 or 3 times per second, have you looked into
RealServer basic? I believe you get a 5-stream license for free, and anything
over that will cost you some money.. As long as you don't mind being limited to
5 streams, you should be all set. Otherwise, you'll have to hack up some
software.

        Cheers,
        Paul.

No, there is no problem.
# mount -t nfs dangeroustoys.nullhouse.org:/home/me /mnt/remote
# mount -t smb //ntbox/whatever /mnt/ntbox
works just fine, and it's possible to access files without a problem in my
case. Not too sure about the ncpfs tools, since I don't have a sane
Novell network to play with, but they should work as well. Linux is a
multitasking, fully network-aware OS, and what you want is one of the
things Linux was designed for.

This probably means you do not have a SoundBlaster 16. If you would post
the *exact make and model* of your sound card, I think someone could help
you. As it is, you didn't provide enough information for anyone to do
anything.

If by some chance you DO have an SB16, then make sure you have PnP turned
off. PnP makes things worse for ISA cards--set the card to use a specific
IRQ, DMA channel, and I/O range, then tell sndconfig what those values
were. Read the Sound-HOWTO at
http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Sound-HOWTO.html
