You're welcome.

Use "ch = fgetc(stdin);" or "ch = getc(stdin);" or "ch = getchar();"
where 'ch' is a 'char'.

See the manual page for 'fgetc', 'getc' and 'getchar'.

Hello,

a lot of people use postscript files for
images and documents but (alas) I don't know
a PS Editor able to open, show a postscript file
and allow modifications on the file (a ``WYSIWYG'').
I would like some free software able to do that
(even if I don't know ``proprietary'' software too).
Someone can tell me if it exists?? Or, in the case
it doesn't exists... is there some good reason??
I know postscript is a trademark of Adobe, but
I think there are no strong restriction in using
it....
Finally, someone thinks a Linux project working
on this kind of software is interesting?

Thanks all. I found out that I'm running 2.0.36. It was the last line
displayed after the bootup finished. I think I'll just apply the latest
kernel and skip the whole patch thing. I have read that the even numbered
kernels are the stable ones though, so I do know to get 2.2.x. Thanks for
the replies though.

It *is* very difficult. One possibility, not free, indeed, costing
five figures (US dollars) are the tools from One Vision
(http://www.one-vision.com/). There is also Tailor, from Enfocus, not
free but costing substantially less.

Some tools are fairly good at importing EPS - Illustrator for
instance.

Interesting, but many years work... a PS interpreter is 2-5 years work
before you have to start worrying about editability. Ultimately, such
tools are really emergency measures, since editing in the original
application is surely much preferable. People with a real need to fix
PostScript in real time do buy One Vision software. People like the
publishers of daily newspapers, for instance, where "fix it tomorrow"
is the last thing anyone would ever say...

OK, here is a list of problems with Zip/Jaz drives from IOmega:

- Some Zip drives skip the first 32 sectors, so that you cannot access
the partition table. I have both types here: Some skip the first 32 sectors
and some don't. Both systems using the same version of the same Linux installation.

- IOmega drives like to have a power cycle once a while, or they stop working
(reset does not help, they need a power cycle!).

One of the mini-faqs deals with low-memory situations.
It applies to all distributions, none will be significantly faster that
another. I have one 486 with about 20MB running under SuSE 5.3 and
Kernel 2.0.38 (no X at all) because memory requirements were lower then.
Is it worth you buying another 32MB? That would also be a solution!

What's a "system disk"? Raid 0-5 is supported.

Postscript is a programming language used to describe to the Postscript
printer what it should print (i.e. you can write "applications" in it
that produce output on paper, see the bottom of page
<URL:http://www.acm.org/tog/resources/RTNews/html/rtnv6n2.html> for a
Postscript ray-tracer).

Postscript documants are very often (almost always) generated from other
types of documents. You can transform LaTeX documents into DVI documants
that in turn are transformed into Postscript using 'dvips', manual pages
may be transformed into Postscript using 'troff', illustartions from
XFig may be saved as Postscript or EPS (Encapsulated Postscript, a
format with bounding box info added).

What I want to say is that Postscript often is the "end format", the
final form for a document before being sent to a Postscript printer.
(Yes, I know PDF files may be created from Postscript files, but that's
about the only time you create a new document from a Postscript
document). There is very seldom a need for editing Postscript files
directly, more often you want to edit the data that generated the
Postscript file (e.g. the LaTeX file or the XFig data).

Programs for viewing Postscript files on GNU/Linux and Unix systems
includes: 'gs', 'gv', 'ghostview'.

pstoedit can convert most PostScript files into formats editable
with most of the vector drawing packages available on Linux.
You can then edit the output in (for example) Xfig or Sketch,
and export back to PostScript.

I had a similar problem once which turned out to be an interrupt
conflict on the motherboard. It didn't bother Linux at all, but sure as
hell stopped Windows booting -- even from a floppy!!

Ok,

The reason I posted this was because I have a Linux machine at home which
consist of a Compaq Deskpro 2000 with a P133 (I ordered a used P200, haven't
received it yet!) with 80mb of RAM (upgraded from 32mb) and a 4.3gig
Harddrive (upgraded from 1gig) and a 2x CDROM and floppy.

My primary home machine is a Dual PII 400 with 512mb of RAM, 21" Dell
Monitor, ATI All in Wonder Pro 8mb Video card, 32x CDROM, 3 10gig
Harddrives, SoundBlaster Live, Well you get the picture!!!

My primary work machine is a Compaq Deskpro with a PII 266 with 192mb of RAM

My Linux machine at work is a Compaq Deskpro with a PIII 667 with 256mb or
RAM and a 13gig Harddrive and CDROM (more powerfull because it's newer).

I said all this just because as you can see, I am used to speed!! and would
like have something a little snappier than the P133 or P200 for Linux (mabe
the equivelent of a PII 366 or 400).

I just figured since those Sun Sparc pizza boxes are soo sexy, it would be
nice to get one with the performance stated above, install Linux and that's
it (I have no special need other than that, Sun Solaris is nice, but I have
no intention of running it).

There is a programme called GNU Parted which I know nothing about;
Also a commercial programme called Partition Magic 5 which worked fine
for me. PM5 is a DOS/Windows programme, but there are two disk images
on the CD which can be used to create an installation of PM which does
NOT need Dos or Windows to be installed.

Subject: How to set icons from Enlightenment theme?
Date: 31 May 2000 09:56:16 GMT

Well I managed to put the eMac.etheme in the right spot so that it
appears when I select 'Run enlightenment configuration tool'. It seems I
have almost everything but the icons that appear in the screenshot on
Ethemes.org. I picked the 'quick' d/load hyperlink for 0.15.
ARe the icons a separate package in an Enlightenment theme file? Or do I
have to grab them myself somehow?
BTW, I have GNOME+E running, at least until I figure out how to get rid
if GNOME :-)
