Subject: Margin problems printing on HP 1100Ase
Date: Sat, 30 Dec 2000 02:31:15 GMT

When I print to my HP 1100 Ase there is 1/4" extra
space on the left and bottom margins. How do I
fix it?

I'm running Red Hat 6.2, using printtool to
configure my printcap. My printcap says:

##PRINTTOOL3## LOCAL ljetplus 300x300 letter {}
LaserJetPlus Default {}
lp:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
        :mx#0:\
        :lp=/dev/lp0:\
        :if=/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter:\
        :sh:

Additionally, HP says that it is a 600x600
resolution printer, but printtool will only select
300x300 when I pick "HP Laserjet" or "HP Laserjet
plus". When I just pick "Postscript printer" it
will let me pick 600x600, but then when I print
the PostScript test page, some ASCII PostScript
language text comes out at the top and then I get
like 4 blank pages. When I set it to "HP
Laserjet" I get the RedHat printtool PostScript
test page, but, again, with the margin's off.

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you,
Daniel

I'm not sure if there is a commercial package available, but you could
configure Squid to do the work. I'm sure there is a site somewhere that
maintains a list of sites to censor. You could use that list with Squid.

Also, use verbose mode to see what is happening.

FYI, use ssh-copy-id instead of manually copying keys--less work!

RealPlayer 7 worked fine. After seeing version 8 on freshmeat, I
downloaded it. (the rpm and bin versions - tried them both). No errors
are noted in the installation. I type 'realplay' ...nothing...no error
messages..no sound. Now I am back using RealPlayer 7. Is anyone else

The AMD CPUs have no CPU ID. This causes a Kernel Panic. Type "linux
x86_serial_nr=1" at the LILO boot prompt to fix it. Also, you'll need to
add that line during your linux install to make it a permanent fix (in
Redhat, kernel options textbox near end of install).

Others have mentioned that /boot only needs megabytes (say 16) not
gigabytes. Also, unless you're going to have hundreds of mail users or a
big postgres database, you don't need 6G for /var, a few hundred meg should
do, and the same goes for / (unless you have a lot of stuff in /opt, and
then I'd make a separate partition for that.) With all the big multimedia
files these days, you'll want a lot more space in /home.

However this should not effect system performance.

>I find my system very slow, especially when I use Java tools (compilation

You might try IBM's Java compiler.

>Also my video card is quiet basic (4 Mb memory)

What video card is it? Maybe it's not running accelerated. You can try
running

startx 2> x.out

and posting the file x.out.

>I can hear the HD turning a lot with a lot of noise and the refreshing of

If it's an IDE drive, you can try tuning it with hdparm. Try

hdparm -Tt /dev/hda
hdparm -d 1 /dev/hda
hdparm -Tt /dev/hda

The first and third lines will do a benchmark so you can see if there's an
improvement when executing the second line, which turns on DMA. This may
have a dramatic effect, especially on newer ATA66/100 drives. If so, you
can put the hdparm line at the bottom of /etc/rc.d/rc.local:

/sbin/hdparm -d 1 /dev/hda

You can also try "-c 1" which turns on 32-bit I/O.

You should also do a

free

to see how much memory is reported.

I also suggest running

ntsysv

and turning off any services you don't use.

Date: Sat, 30 Dec 2000 04:31:46 GMT

After much hair pulling, I've discovered why my serial port won't work.
Apparently my mobo has three serial devices (two comm ports and an IR port),
of which only two at a time can be active. I looked in the BIOS setup and
noticed that the IR port was activated, but didn't realize at the time that
this meant that COM2 was thereby de-activated. I turned off the IR port and
now the serial port works as advertised.

You have to set your modem to report it. In the init string,
the "W" term does it for me:
W0 reports DTE (computer-to-modem) speed only
W1 reports DCE, error correction protocol, and DTE speed
W2 reports DCE (modem-to-modem) speed only.
Some modems have a setting to report everything.
Check your modem manual.
