For standard disks in most computers, I would agree. I may even agree
wrt ATA disks in laptops. The ATA disk has much smaller platters and
doesn't rev up that quickly, so there may not be a wear and tear issue
with start/stop cycles as there is with the 3 1/2 inch platter drives.

I wonder if Toshiba has any info on the subject.

What's in /etc/resolv.conf?
After you bring up the interface, what does "ifconfig" show?
What's in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0?

If you've configured the NIC to use DHCP, you shouldn't have
to do anything manually. It will usually state that it
failed to bring the interface up if it didn't obtain an IP
address.

Subject: Rescue disk without rdev?
Date: Sat, 17 Jun 2000 23:28:40 GMT

I rearranged the drives/cables in one of my Linux boxes (we'll
call it A) [you can skip this part] because I need the mounting
brackets out of machine A to install a new IDE disk in machine
B so that I can take the old IDE disk out of machine B and put
it in machine C, so that I can take the SCSI disk out of
machine C and put it in machine D.

Anyway, I ended up with a non-booting machine A because the
drive order changed. Which I expected. No worries.

When I couldn't find my resque disk, so I shoved in
tomsrtbt-1.7.<something>, since I've always heard it was
cooler-than-cool.

It started up nicely and has more stuff than one would expect,
but it doesn't have rdev! Yikes, that's about the 5th most
important think you can put on a rescue disk after a shell, a
text editor, mount, and fsck.

Doesn't anybody else ever need rdev when fixing up a broken
installation, or am I the only one who gets himself into those
situations?

I know I've got a resque image around somewhere....

It is a tape drive from a Gateway system which has since
been gutted. While I haven't opened the box (I don't do
hardware), I think it hangs off of the floppy disk
interface.

Exactly. My guess is that the Colorado backup tapes
are in a proprietary format. They were written by
Colorado Software running under W95. I'm trying
to retrieve them using either Linux or OS/2; and
I am beginning to think that it is a hopeless effort.

(I have yet to try installing the Colorado Software
in an OS/2 DOS session.)

Thanks for your reply.

You're showing the virtual hosts definition but the script you're
executing is in /home/httpd/cgi-bin. What's in the
<Directory /home/httpd/cgi-bin> section?

Sure it's using your RAM. That's what it's _there_ for. Tell
you what: pull out all but 64M and mail it to me. That will
keep your Linux system from using all that RAM. ;)

>I think there's something going on here. Could anybody please
>tell me why this is happening

Linux will use all of the RAM available. Anything not used for
programs will be used for disk cache and buffers. Processes
that aren't active will get shoved out onto swap so that the
RAM can be used for other things, like programs that _are_
active and to cache files that are being used.

>and how to fox it?

It most probably doesn't need fixing.

Look closely and the memory usage and see how much of it is
being used for a disk cache and disk buffers:

[root@localhost lib]# free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 63008 61284 1724 18580 6176 41460
-/+ buffers/cache: 13648 49360
Swap: 136544 5008 131536

OK, I've got 64M and 61M is used. That sounds bad since I'm
not doing much, but look at the second line.

49M is used for disk cache and buffers, and only 13M is
actually being used up by programs (mostly just X which is up
to 9M at the moment).

If you are not going to locate and fix the bug within the daemon by
yourself you should get hold of the updates from RedHat. Most
implementations should notice stale lock files on there own. If yours
does not you will have to remove them by hand.

You configured your chat script to wait for the character ~ which is
never received. Due it runs into the timeout of 10 seconds as marked by
the "alarm".

Use printtool.

Fire it up, add a SMB printer, and then fill in the blanks.

Its the same type of config as for a regular printer, except that
(afterwards) you'll notice that your printcap entry will show
lp:/dev/null:\ instead of /dev/lp0. This is done, so that your
printer doesn't try to print locally. The print job is filtered by
the redhat print filters, and these print filters connect to the print
machine via smbclient.

You'll need to know the windows machine name (\\<insert name here>),
the group, user, and password (if you have passwords setup on your
network printers). Fill in all the blanks, choose the correct input
filter from the menu system, and you're all set.

The only extra thing you need to do, when printtool is done, is check
the /var/spool/lpd/<insert printer name here>/.config file.

Make sure the correct password, user etc.. are filled in. I've
noticed that printtool doesn't properly fill in these items. It seems
to put the first part of the line in, but doesn't properly insert the
correct values for the variable.

Hope that helps,

Adam

I want to install Mandrake on my Linux system. I have 2 system on
internet, one with windows (9.6 Gig ) and one with Linux (5 Gig).
I want to download the full Mandrake on my windows system, and install
mdk using ftp.
Here's 3 reason why i don't want to use known ftp server.
1) I'm using PPPoE for internet, the network image don't suported it.
2) Even if my connection is fast, it may not be very stable. ( from 20
to 100 K/s )
3) I have a small fast Lan ( 2 computer using 100 mpbs ethernet card )
and i can install it rapidly without download.

Is it posible? ( my windwos is configures as 192.168.1.3 )
Which file should i download? ( iso or the Mandrake directory )

Thanks.

Actually, I think Init is trying to start this service. Check your

Then you can comment it out or whatever is appropriate for your

Modem busy can be an IRQ conflict. Check dmesg file (in /var
/messages) to see where linux finds it, and when it shows busy, do
cat /proc/interrupts to check IRQ's.
Modem locked simply indicates the presence of a lock file in
/var/lock . It will be called "modem" or "modemlock" ; you can delete it.

You need to make a small boot partition below cylinder 1024.
ie RH recommends about 16Mb for /boot
You should then be able to use the rest of the drive for /
