Sounds like someone took Antitrust a little too seriously, or at least
couldn't come up with something original.

It was the same in Poland. We do not pay taxes from something what not have
value. But tax office could not stand that there is something thay could not
take money from. Thay decide that linux could bring proffits and it have to
be under the tax. Thus it should take tax from people who do not have cars,
because they save money not buin the car.

Try Dia for diagrams - it's pretty easy and straightforward to use. Its
designed to be like Visio and covers entity relationship diagrams, UML
diagrams, flowcharts, network diagrams, and simple circuits.

But not the IP Masq w/ VPN (i.e. masquerading VPN traffic), I've
noticed a patch, but was looking for a distribution that supports that
along with internet server functions.

Subject: Help with 2.4 upgrade
Date: Wed, 17 Jan 2001 21:31:50 GMT
Hi I downloaded the new linux-2.4.0.tar.gz and am trying to upgrade.
My specific problem is with trying to configure binutils.
>From the linux/Documentation/Changes file, which the README says to
read,
it says I need atleast the revision numbers specified for certain
software.
my binutils was
$ ld -v
GNU ld version 2.9.1 (with BFD 2.9.1.0.23)
and the specified one is 2.9.1.0.25 so I decided to upgrade binutils.
The latest one I got was binutils-2.10.1.0.4
I have gcc --version 2.91.66 (as recommended)
Gnu Make 3.77 (as recommended)
however when I try to do a ./configure in the binutils directory
I get the following error message:
Configuring for a i686-pc-linux-gnu host.
Created "Makefile" in /usr/home/mbil/kernels/binutils-2.10.1.0.4 using
"mt-frag"
collect2: ld returned 33 exit status
*** The command '/usr/bin/gcc -o conftest -g conftest.c' failed.
*** You must set the environment variable CC to a working compiler.
and when I echo $CC it says /usr/bin/gcc
and as far as I know it is a working compiler.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

What happens if you buy linux from cheapbytes rather than Redhat?
You can get a redhat clone for about $5 American at cheapbytes
yet Redhat sells their basic package for $30 American.
What happens if you download it off the net?
Do you pay a percentage of the cost of the "package" or some sort of
flat fee?

Here is the spot :
I have Mandrake 7.1, with 2.2.17.
I just compiled 2.2.18, because I needed USB support.
I had mentionned the french keytable within the compile process, but
when I launched the kernel, I had lost my french characters (you now,
those with the "accents").
When I type under a console, I get some weird character like a greek
letter or else, but not the proper one.
And under KDE, everything that had an accent in it is now cut before the
incriminated letter !
The problem is : when booting 2.2.17, I have now the same Pb.
What should I look for ?

Two separate questions: (RedHat 6.2)
(note that im NOT a linux expert altho I can find my way around most
things)
##### .forward file #####
how do I get a copy kept locally, sent to an external mailbox, AND
filtered thru a program.
from what I can find on the net I would do this
localuser, [EMAIL PROTECTED], "|/usr/bin/program"
however the best results i can get with this is that it keeps a local
copy in localuser's account and it pipes the incoming mail to the
program, but it doesnt send the mail out, nor can I find any error
messages. any clues, even where i might check for msgs besides
/var/log/maillog
##### starting ntpd #####
where would i put ntpd to have it start on boot?

thanks in advance

We have some new machines with Tyan thunder motherboards in them. They have
Symbios SCSI chips on the mb. We built a nice 2.1.18 kernel with new driver
for the SCSI. it is very unstable.
We keep getting: Kernel panic assertino k != -1 failed line 10128
Anyone out there with a similar working configuration able to offer some
advice?

Why don't you put your two CD's on the same IDE? I have a Yamaha CD/R/RW as
secondary master and a Teac 32x CD as secondary slave. This works fine as the
Yamaha is equivalent to 40xCD. Eventually the Teac will be replaced by a Pioneer
DVD. Cheers, Peter.

It is really hopeless, not because the information is not there, but
because the answer has so many orthogonal components. If yo are running
a Red Hat type system, for example, you would really have to do a rpm
-qa to get a listing of everything you have on the machine.
uname -r would tell you what kernel you are running.
cat /etc/issue would tell you what release was originally installed, but
would tell you NOTHING about any updates you put in. rpm -qa gives me
432 lines of output that I would be diffident about posting here. But
that would be what were required to know what distribution I am REALLY
running.

changing kernel parameters and recompiling the kernel is an intrinsic part
of UNIX history so it's a regular thing to do. Many UNIX's these days have
attempted to eliminate that need, but that's only a nice thing, not a reason
to avoid tradition on platforms that need it.
Having said that, I don't know how nasty it is to relink a kernel in Linux -
it's certainly been p***-easy on professional UNIX versions I've used in the
past.

LILO 21.6 can be configured with a second "other=" section to boot W98. This
is the first version of lilo which will automatically activate/deactivate

Versions of lilo beyond 21.2 will boot from beyond cylinder 1023 with the
'lba32' option. Just rember, that this capability requires EDD bios calls on
int 0x13. The LILO diagnostic disk will tell you if your BIOS has these
calls. (see the site below).
