I recently got a DSL connection to the Internet (woo hoo!!!) and
immediately after the guy left after installing it on my Win98 box, I
pulled it and put it on my Linux Box (was RedHat, now's Mandrake 7.1). I
got IP Masquerading up and running fine and I can do all the net stuff
from any of the four machines connected to the Linux machine. The only
problem I've run into is with DNS. I had DNS working fine before the DSL
stuff. I can ping the Linux machine via its IP address, but not via its
name. Same with all the other machines on the network. This is keeping
Samba from running correctly. My question is this. Is there a clear-cut
guide to setting this up in plain elglish? The ADSL connection is on
ETH0 and the internal connection is ETH1. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks,

Thanks for the answer.
I'll go one step beyond simply clearing out the /boot directory. I'll create another
directory, mv everything from /boot into it and
verify that everything still works correctly. If it does, the files will join
honorable ancestors; if not, I should have an escape
route.
BTW, after thinking about it awhile, I think I know how the files came to be in /boot.
Last November, I copied everything from my
old 4 gig drive that was getting flaky onto my new drive. I haven't specifically
checked, but there's a chance I 'magpied' the
Hard-Disk-Upgrade mini HOWTO.

The problem was that @home did not restrict upload speeds and thus people
who ran servers deteriorated performance for the rest of the people on the
network. Now they restrict uploads to 128kbps so running servers should not
be that much of a deal since you can't get more upload bandwidth then 128.

I had the same trouble using a Diamond Speedstar A50 (agp, 8meg, SiS
6326 chipset) . I was running RedHat 6.1. The problem was solved by
adding a couple of options to the /etc/X11/XF86Config file. For a list of
options go to http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.5/SiS3.html#3 I needed "noaccel",
"no_linear", and "no_bitblt". Different video controllers may need
different options, even for the same chipset, so you may need to use trial
and error. Some options with some video controllers will render X
unreadable at all, so make a backup of your X config file, and be prepared
to go to text mode to change it back if things don't turn out.

Your friend has chosen well. Installing linux with the SiS6326
chipset is an excellent choice for a command line virgin. He should learn
much about XFree86 and an editor of his choice. I had the same trouble
with a Diamond Speedstar A50 (AGP, 8meg, SiS6326 chipset) when I installed
RedHat 6.1. The mainboard was one of Shuttle's Spacewalker models, with a
Celeron 400. Text in Xterminals and some of the pop up windows (such as
those that pop up when adding a printer through printtool) was displayed as
a rectangular block. I think Slackware support has him on the right track.
I solved my trouble by adding a couple of the options found at
http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.6/SiS3.html#3 to the "Device" section of the
configuration file. I'm not sure what the file is named in Slack's
distribution, in RedHat it is /etc/X11/XF86Config. I checked that option
"noaccel" was un-commented and added options "no_linear" and "no_bitblt".
Different video cards with the SiS6326 may need different options. I also
suggest cautioning your friend to make a copy of his file and be prepared
to go to text mode after starting X, as some of these options with some
video cards will render X totally unreadable.

First, how is this drive attached? IDE or SCSI? Both should work, but
there may be problems if the IDE device is plugged into an add-on Ultra66
interface such as a Promise card. Do a search on this NG for "Promise
66" if that's the case; many people have had this problem and been able to
work around it.
Second, partitioned using what, exactly? If the disk is partitioned into
2 MS-DOS partitions, there's no space to create Linux partitions. Fire up
DOS FDISK and delete the second partition if that's the case, I guess.
This shouldn't happen; Redhat's installer should fire up the partition
mangler at some point and allow you to repartition your disk.
Third, you will have a bit of a hard time if you don't have any free space
under the 8G limit. Redhat's installer will complain if you don't create
a / or a /boot partition that's completely under cylinder 1024, since even
the latest Redhat didn't ship with the new LILO that makes the 8G limit
obsolete. /boot doesn't have to be large; 10M will be plenty for
it. HTH,

fdisk DEVICE (for hard disks and ... well, most ZIP disks!)
mke2fs DEVICE (creates Linux filesystem; use mkdosfs for DOS)
or
fdformat /dev/fd0XXX (only for floppies)
mkdosfs /dev/fd0XXX (DOS=lowest common denominator, readable
anywhere, reccommended for floppies!)
If you really want to, you can skip the fdisk step for your ZIP disks and
just mke2fs /dev/sdc, but it will be interesting/frustrating for other
folks to use those disks. Just a word of warning.
As for "which aliases the kernel expects" in /etc/conf.modules, I don't
know for sure. SuSE at least shipped with a reasonably complete and
well-documented with comments /etc/conf.modules; using that and a bit of
trial and error, I figured many things out.
