Well, not exactly, but I have some advice. If you have a program that
does something like that again, strace it. You may find out that
there was a file deleted or some event took place that would preclude
your program from running correctly. Pay close attention to
errors marked ENOENT ( no such file or directory ). If you do
a 'man errno', the rest of the possible errors are summarized there.
Something like this: 'strace -f -p PID'
I believe is the syntax... 'man strace' to be sure.

anm

My goal is to have the 'sg module' load automatically.

And I got this:
Using /lib/modules/2.2.14/scsi/sg.o

How can I get the sg module to load automatically given the above

Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 06:30:03 GMT
Hi,
to run ServletExec you need to have DSO support enabled. This is not the
default state of Apache with Red Hat 6 apparently, so one needs to
recompile thus:
cd <apache source dir>
rm src/support/apxs
./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache --enable-module=so
make
make install
Is the Apache source dir where 'http_core.c 'is i.e. 'usr/include/apache'?
Because that is not 'usr/local/apache' - no such dir on my system.
Also, apxs is in 'usr/sbin' rather than where they specify.
So bearing these facts in mind if I use my correct paths, and the recompile
still fails for some reason, will I lose Apache, or would I just get some
error message and survive. I really don't want to screw this up.
Thanks, Alan.

Aside from what people have posted, New Deal Office is $69.95 and is
quite peppy on a 286, let alone a 386.

Subject: softraid problem with SuSE 6.4 and 2.2.x kernel
Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 08:51:56 +0200
hi,
I'm using SuSE 6.4 Distribution and the 2.2.16-kernel. When I compiled the
kernel I enabled RAID-option and built raid-support as modules.
I also have raidtools 0.9 installed.
I did NOT patch the kernel or something.
/etc/raidtab looks like this:
raiddev /dev/md0
raid-level 0
nr-raid-disks 2
persistent-superblock 1
chunk-size 4
device /dev/sdd1
raid-disk 0
device /dev/sde1
raid-disk 1
then I call "mkraid /dev/md0"
handling MD device /dev/md0
analyzing super-block
disk 0: /dev/sdd1, 8956206kB, raid superblock at 8956096kB
disk 1: /dev/sde1, 8956206kB, raid superblock at 8956096kB
mkraid: aborted, see the syslog and /proc/mdstat for potential clues.
cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [2 raid0]
read_ahead not set
md0 : inactive
md1 : inactive
md2 : inactive
md3 : inactive
In the syslog files I dont find any error-message.
What's the problem here ?
Thnx for your help in advance,
Clemens

You need to be using "obs" instead of "bs". With "bs" dd will
try to preserve the input "record boundaries" that it sees from
the socket/pipe/tty/whatever on its output; with "obs" dd will
buffer the input and output only "obs"-sized blocks (execept,
possibly, the last block).

Yes, for the low LOW price of only $69.95 you get a <GASP!> Word Processor.
PLUS, you get this set of steak knifes! NOW how much would you pay!? Yikes!
The guy asked for *freeware*, not gougeware!
There are a large number of programs that will meet your needs damn well,
even on a 386 (no, I'm not laughing either). If you have linux, you have
beaucoup choices. You could install pico, vi, emacs, vim, elvis, etc.
There are so many. You can use tex for formatting output to the printer,
although if you use ghostscript you will be waiting for a while for each
printout. I'm sure others can suggest even better solutions. (Right?) BTW,
if you send text-only output to the printer, you will not have to wait long
at all. I run a 486 and the "pep" in my word processor is as fast as on
a P3/1GHz (because you don't need any cpu power with well designed word
processors).

I can't tell from here, and you didn't provide that information, but is
this a UDMA66 drive? If so, try searching this NG and COL.setup
(comp.os.linux.setup) and COL.hardware for more info. These controllers
aren't supported out of the, though you can use them after you
installed. (with the drive set as not being a UDMA66 drive)

For /dev/ttyS1 the corresponding cua device is cua1.
The mgetty program is probably a much better getty for ppp dialin.
It has option to auto detect ppp frames, so it know when and how to
invoke the pppd daemon when someone dials in.
The uugetty from getty-ps is a bit dated, and it doesn't work properly
without the cua device, especially when using the modem line for
outgoing calls.

Can't tell you exactly, but things to look at are
man depmod
man modprobe
On my machine (Debian), I have the "modutils" package installed,
and a recent kernel, which means that depmod and modprobe happen
automatically rather than me having to call them by hand.

You could start by NOT crossposting to loads of irrelevant newsgroups.
Then you could try 'modprobe sg'
Then you could recompile the module for the kernel that you're using.

Let me defend Carl's recommendation.
New Deal Office used to be called Geoworks Ensemble 2.0, which many
folks here (and in the msdos newsgroup) may remember from years past.
It is still based on PC/GEOS, and to a DOS user it provides a number of
extremely valuable services including a preemptive and multithreaded
multitasking environment (the UI can be Motif-like or Win95-like), an
excellent graphical drag-and-drop file manager, a decent word processor
and drawing package with support for rotatable/scalable fonts and sets
of vector and bitmap drawing tools, a basic spreadsheet, and a number
of miscellaneous smaller apps and utilities (CD Player, basic GUI web
browser, solitaire game, calculator, etc.).
Granted, there may be free DOS packages which might better serve the
original poster's word processing needs (and certainly for less money),
but for total value I suspect you'd be VERY hard pressed (at least in a
pure DOS environment) to beat what the New Deal suite offers under DOS.

Subject: Please Help W/My Various Problems (lost passwd, x, "LI", and just a couple
more)
Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 08:56:03 GMT
Greetings,
First, the specs and the details: PIII 600, 128MB RAM, 20GB HD, TNT2 64
(32MB), Sblaster Live! Value, Aztech v.90 modem....Trying to install Linux
(redhat 6.2) on my buddy's system (on the same HD which has win98 - yes, I
have fdisk'd so that Linux has it's own partitions), here are the problems,
please help me.
1. Once the installation process is over and it reboots, instead of the
reassuring LILO prompt, I only got "LI". How can I resolve this? Does the
HD have to be set as "normal", "LBA" or something else in BIOS?
2. When I tried to configure X, when it came to testing out the X
configuration, once the screen goes blank to test, I'd get this floating
bubble saying, "sync out of range". I tried to change the v&h sync ranges
to various numbers, but I'd still get the same result. The monitor's from
Dell.
3a. How can I get into my own box for which I lost the password to root and
the users I created (yeah, they both were same)? Someone told me to boot
into it in single mode, but I don't know how to do that and also, once in
single mode, I understand I'd have to mount the partitions correctly so
that I can write to the files which need to be changed. Can someone please
kindly instruct me how?
4. For those Redhat 6.2 users, once the installation process was and it was
rebooting, it dawned on me that it never asked me or I missed the part
about where LILO should be installed. If I did indeed miss it, where in
the installation process should I be expecting it?
5. How can I get sound to work with SBLive! Value?
TIA! Please help!
Regards,
RipRock

Subject: Animated screen capture.
Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 08:46:01 GMT
I working in an Engineering environment and I have a set of time
dependant graphs which I wish to display. If I use gnuplot and plot the
graph one after each other I get an animated display. What I want to do
is to save the animation as an .avi or .mpeg file. So I'm trying to find
a program like Lotus's ScreenCam which grabs the images on screen and
converts it to an .avi file.
Of course if there is a way of just converting my (graph)data file
direct to a moving image and not using gnuplot, all the better.
Thanks for any help
