OK, i put my server under a crash test (transferred some mp3s between it
and my desktop...), it crashed.

Subject: System spends too much time in X, but only sometimes...?
Date: Sun, 22 Oct 2000 07:10:37 -0400
I have top running in one pane of my desktop, where I run
GNOME/Enlightenment. Normally, X takes only a relatively small
amount of CPU time, such as 5 or 6% and sometimes less. But
sometimes it goes up to 25% or even a little more. The version
I have (pointed to by /etc/X11/X) is
valinux:jdbeyer[/etc/X11]$ rpm -qf /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA
XFree86-SVGA-3.3.5-1.6.0
valinux:jdbeyer[/etc/X11]$
I think I could understand this if some process were updating a
lot of stuff on the screen or something, but this does not seem
to be the case. This can happen when there are only three
windows open: one for top, one for xosview (and even if I close
that), and an xterm that is just running tail on a file that
grows by one line every few minutes. If I get out of X by
pressing Control-Alt-PF1 and login there (not logging out of
the X stuff), and run top there, the CPU time required by X
drops to around (and sometimes under) 1%.
Is this normal? I hate to have the CPU time wasted (if it is
being wasted) like that, since I have two instances of
SETI@home stuff that could be using that time better than
spinning inside X somewhere. I have a Matrox G200 AGP video
board, but I do not suppose that matters. Why does it use so
much CPU time sometimes and not other times? 25% of an 1100 MHz
machine (I have two 550MHz Pentium IIIs in this machine) seems
a lot. Most of the cycles are spent in "System", not "User".

When you compile the kernel you shouldn't have to make any changes to
the modem or ppp configuration, but you do need to make sure you include
the ppp option in the kernel.

Subject: crashed X on moving files
Date: Sun, 22 Oct 2000 12:15:09 GMT
Greetings!
I would really like some help with this, partly to solve the
problem but perhaps even more to understand it.
(I'm not a complete newbie to Linux (off-and-on user (more 'off'
than 'on') for about five yrs) but I'm digging in now more and
want to learn repair and maintenance stuff that's second nature
to me in OS/2 (and Windows).)
So, here's the scoop. I'm using Mandrake 7 and whatever the KDE
version it's got fresh off the cdrom. I've made myself user
<davisf> and find that (almost, not always) whenever I move files
in and out of folders, X crashes.
I get an error message like:
"KiKbd: SelectWindowInput: XGetWindowAttributes: error: Window
ID:2400100"
(a) What's the problem?
(b) Without blowing <davisf> away and reconfiguring, how do I
repair?
Here's a bonus question:
(c) Is there a way to back up the desktop (like in OS/2) and
restore it if it goes flakey?
I'd know exactly what to do in OS/2 and I'd have the tools to do
it. I'd like to increase my speed in Linux.

I am running RH6.2 and somehow my tab key has gotten mapped to
backspace.
I am accessing my linux box via an exceed xdmcp session. I have checked
exceed for any mapping and it seems to be using the default which i am
confident does not map the tap key.
The backspace behavior occurs in xterm windows and while running gvim,
the gui version of vim.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. this is quite annoying

Subject: How to mount logical Windows partition?
Date: Sun, 22 Oct 2000 13:27:42 GMT
I have a hard drive that's been partitioned.
The first partition is a primary partition. The second partition is a
logical partition within an extended partition.
The first partition is easily mounted as sdb1 (the first partition of
the second SCSI disk).
For some reason, I get an error for trying to mount sdb2, because it's a
logical partition within an extended partition.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Use mmv, it's build to do just that: mmv 'subdir/*-*.txt' subdir/=1:=2.txt
If mmv isn't included in your distro, get it from a comp.sources.unix
archive, it was posted on the 9th April 1990.

Wine is a free project that allows Windows applications on Linux.
VMWare is a computer emulator to run Windows OS.
Win4Lin is another commercial product.

This sounds like a problem with KDE you may want to check
comp.windows.x.kde for help.
The desktop in KDE is in ~/Desktop, cp it to another name and it should
restore the desktop if you cp it back.

Yep:
>From /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/base/letter.cls:
\setlength\parskip{0.7em}
\setlength\parindent{0\p@}
The letter class (style) has 0 paragraph indentation. Note: the letter
class (style) is mostly intended for *formal* [business type] letters.
It might make sense to create a 'personal' letter style file. Say
something like:
---- Begin personal.sty -----
\setlength\parindent{1em}
\newcommand{\love}{\closing{Love,}}
\newcommand{\dear}[1]{\opening{Dear #1,}}
\name{Uncle Robbie}
---- End personal.sty -----
And then including in the preamble, such as in this letter:
========== Begin sample letter to my niece Gemma ==============
\documentclass[12pt]{letter}
\usepackage{personal}
\begin{document}
\begin{letter}{}
\dear{Gemma}
How was your birthday party? Did you like the present I sent?
Have you read any of the stories yet? How are things in school?
I heard that your mom took you and your little brother on a ``road
trip'' to you visit your grandmother, your Aunt Susan and Uncle Chris and
your cousin Celeste? Did you have fun in Rochester?
\love
\end{letter}
\end{document}
========== End sample letter to my niece Gemma ==============
By 'displays nicely on the screen' is this in the editor or with xdvi?
All formatting of the *source* .tex file is ignored -- that is *manual*
indentation done in the editor window is totally ignored. LaTeX is
*NOT* WYSIWYG! The display from xdvi *should* match the hard copy
*exactly*.

Linux does not really like sharing interrupts across different kinds of
devices (sharing interrupts for different instances of the same device is
allowed, depending on how 'smart' the device driver is). *My* guess is
that when things get busy on eth1 and/or if the disk(s) on ide3 are
involved, somebody loses an interrupt and then waits 'forever' -- I.E.
you get a 'deadly embrace' (deadlock). If you can somehow change the
interrupt assignments around to avoid this interrupt sharing, things will
probably work better.

Are you sure about that partition's designation?
In IDE-speak, primary partitions are numbered 1-4; extended partitions
start at 5. So, if I had an IDE drive partitioned as you describe, the
logical drives would be hdb1 and hdb5. As a matter of fact, my hdc looks
like this:
/dev/hdc6 / ext2 defaults 1 1
/dev/hdc1 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2
/dev/hdc5 none swap sw

/dev/sdb2 may refer to the extended partition, but not to the logical
partition. The first logical partition is /dev/sdb5, so try that. (If
you have other logical partitions on the drive, it's conceivable that
the one you want won't be /dev/sdb5, but instead /dev/sdb6, /dev/sdb7,
etc.)

If RoadRunner works in Linux, which dist. works best for it? (i.e. which
one is EASIEST to set up?)

A quick search of Deja would have turned up: append="mem=256M"

I believe mindspring can connect with either pap or terminal based login.
The attachment to this message has the contents of my ppp-on,
ppp-0n-dialer, pap-secrets, .demand-ppd, and ppp-off scripts that work
with mindspring.
the demand-pppd script will connect you whenever a program needs a
connection. I REALLY love it. I wish I could remember who wrote it so I
could give them credit.
All these are in my /etc/ppp/ directory. Each script has #!/bin/sh at
the start. You will have to separate them out into individual files.
