The lilo config is one way to do it. I have also been successfull by
turning off the power management in the BIOS. This may work depending on
the BIOS and if you do not need power management enabled.

That's kind of big isn't it?? Mine only has 92499 lines in it with a
custom built kernel.

Sawmill isn't the same window manager, exactly. It's an older
version (they changed the name around May). So, if you're using
Sawmill, then you're using the older window manager. That one
crashed on me when I clicked on Netscape's address book in a reply
to a message. I removed it completely (so it's not there anymore at
all) and replaced it with the latest Sawfish.

I basically spent most of the day trying to get this to work and I
finally did and the solution was really too simple. I ran
helix-upgrade. It reported a fix for sawfish (don't ask me why it
didn't install that right from the start during the main install
since that fix is a couple of weeks old). Actually, I ran into a
problem there too. It said it needed BC and quit right in the
middle of the install (actually it didn't install any of the
upgrades). I downloaded BC and installed it and then ran the
upgrade again and it installed fine and has been working properly
ever since.

I also ran into a problem with the Midnight Commander File Manager.
My icons weren't appearing properly and trying to change them woudl
crash the desktop and cause it to reload. I found Mandrake just
released a patch fix for that in their cooker section. I downloaded
that and it works fine now too.

This is correct, it is a font problem. I should have read the error message
more closel but I saw what seemd to be a new system and lah, de, dah, de,
dah ...
Most likely, though, the fault lies with the X Font Server.
Change to directory /etc/rc.d/init.d and run:

./xfs start

Make note of any error messages.

Subject: Linux Proxy Client?
Date: Sat, 22 Jul 2000 03:45:20 GMT

My question is, does a proxy client for Linux exist???

I have a Linux machine which connects to the internet via a Windows 98
machine running WinProxy and a modem. I would like to have full network
functionaliy on my Linux machine, but I have not been able to find a way
to do this. I know that the preferred solution to this problem is put
the modem on the Linux machine and make the Linux machine a
router/proxy/etc

Unfortunately the Linux machine is not anywhere close to a phone jack,
and since I live in an apartment at school, I can not add another one
near my computer since I will be vacating this place within the month.

Any suggestions and help is most appreciated.

Yes, I found it also today, however, it seems to be based in Belgium,
and it doesn't seem they're past the initial idea stage. They do mention
a press release by Corel, on may 31st, promising free internet access to
Linux users (or was it Corel Linux users? or Corel customers? not very
clear).

Juno is a company - they don't seem to give a damn about anyone's
freedom. What they're interested in is the income they may be deriving
from our connection to the internet through them, and apparently they
don't want the business of Linux users. I doubt they would be interested
to listen if they weren't convinced they could turn it into profit.
Don't blame them too hard - after all, the Open Source/Linux model of
business still has, in the corporate mind, to prove its viability.

Matrox G200/G400. Best 2D performance you'll see, reasonable 3D. If
you want to play Quake3 with a minimum of fuss, you might be better off
with a Voodoo3. If you need something cheap and don't care about 3D,
get an ATi Xpert98.

You can point your browser at your proxy. But a proxy is usually limited
to certain functions like http and ftp, but nothing else.

You can use a proxy on Linux, but you can do much more by not using one,
and instead just masquerading your LAN as the IP of your internet
connection.

A 25' phone extension cord. I get a full V.90 connection on mine.

Subject: Networking/Ethernet help, can't ping neighbooring PC
Date: Sat, 22 Jul 2000 03:12:09 -0400

Hi,
I'm try to get networking running properly over my 3c509B Ethernet cards. I
have two of them, both in this Linux system.

When I started the Mandrake 7.1 install, eth0 was already physically
installed. I have since then put in a eth1, and plan to do some IP Masq. I
told Mandrake to configure networking, but that didn't seem to do anything.

I am having some problems with eth1. Acutally, I don't know if eth0 works,
because my cable modem is down and I can't test.

eth1 if for my internal network. When I set eth1 up, I do the following:

ifconfig eth1 192.168.1.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up

However, when I do a netstat -rn I get the following output (with the
loopback interface left out):

Dest: 192.168.1.0 GW: 0.0.0.0 Genmask: 255.255.255.0 Flags: U Iface: eth1

I then try to ping 192.168.1.2 (another PC connected to the same hub as the
Linux box in question) and I get no response. That GW in the routing table
doesn't look right to me. Shouldn't it be 192.168.1.1? The flags don't
look good either, shouldn't they have a G in there? It is auto configured
by the system when I do the ifconfig command, and I can't seem to get rid of
or change it.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Brian

I used netconf in Redhat 6.2 to get my second nic going. I made the net
device 3c509, and same ip as you have. However, it wouldn't route. When I
looked at /proc/interrupts, I couldn't see the second nic. That was because
it was trying to use the same irq as the first. I went into the bios and
told it to assign a different irq to my first nic, which is pci. now,
having two identical isa nics will prove to be a problem. I have heard
there is a flash util to change the irq of a 3c509, but I haven't found it,
but then again, I didnt need it.

Why using a ram disk and not keeping the tata in lagre storage
variables. This wil save you the overhead of library an kernel code.

It's on one of the driver disks. Probably the second one, the
way they re-did the disk distribution. Runs under DOS.

To comment on the routing table though, it looks fine except
that eth0 is missing. Run "ifconfig" with no parameters to
see what interfaces are up.

Also, I'm assuming there's an ifup (or similar) script in
Mandrake. Try "ifup eth1" instead of specifying all of the
parameters using ifconfig. I'd say to check the configuration
files manually if I knew where they were. On my RedHat system,
it's /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-$INTERFACE (where
$INTERFACE if eth0, eth1, etc). Maybe they're the same.
