Bringing up the link again does not set the default route. There are
many many problems with default routes in RH6.2. You will have to
manually add the default route - or fix the scripts. I have been unable
to really fix the scripts, but just added some route commands to fix my
setup.
The link does not go down because there are some packets going over it -
even though you are not aware of it. You will have to use ipchains to
log packets going over link - and filtering them as needed.
Ipchains needs a way to prevent certain packets from triggering a call
or keeping a connection up - but without preventing them from going out
if the connection is already up. Or did I miss this feature somewhere?

Subject: Samba cannot provide the file sharing as NT does?
Date: Wed, 01 Nov 2000 09:45:19 GMT
RedHat 6.2 server with Samba 2.0. Workstation is Windows 95/98. The
application with Btrieve Engine is installed on Windows workstation and the
data is put in a directory on the server which is shared and mapped as a
logical drive on workstation.
While the application is accesing the data on the server, sometime the
program will report "File System Error".
Somebody says it's because the mapping is not established before the remote
drive is browsed. If the remote drive is accessed in Explorer after boot,
then the application should work well. The recommendation is to change the
logon behaviour in the Network's property.
Who can confirm on that?
Another question about Samba: I found I could not browse the user list from
the NT server emulated by Linux with Samba, while I want to share a local
directory by User Level Access Control. Could some configuration be adjusted
to get the user list?

Apologies for cross-postings.
The Software Group of UCISA are organising a one-day seminar on 'A
Buyer's Guide to free Unix and Applications' in Oxford, UK on 6 December.
With increasing use being made of different varieties of free and
Public Domain Unix (such as FreeBSD and Linux) and applications such
as StarOffice, this seminar will discuss some varieties of Unix and
applications that are freely available. It also includes discussion of
the viability of providing a professional desktop environment on Linux
and examples of high-availability services, such as web services,
built on Linux.
Visit http://www.ucisa.ac.uk/SG/events/dec_2000.htm for more details,
the program and the on-line booking form for this event.
We look forward to seeing you there.

that is a large part of the growth numbers you have seen.

Hi ,thaks .
The Solution is :
1.- Your kernel must have support for serial consoles ( Block Devices ->
Virtual Console + Serial port + Console on serial Prot )
2.- Install getty_ps.XXX.rpm package.
3.- Add line to lilo.conf as it
serial=0,9600n8
4.- Add kenel parameter on lilo.conf:
append="console=ttyS0,9600
5.- Add suport for login on serial console on /etc/inittab
s1:123:respanw:/sbin/getty ttyS0 -L DT9600 vt100
6.- Add suport for root login on serial console on /etc/securetty add to the
end "ttyS0"
OK

If using WinCE, the OS is loaded from the CD. Most games
use the Dreamcast's OS directly, and not WinCE.

Yep. That was the reason Sega made it compatible with WinCE.

As far as I can see, redhat 7.0 has been compiled with a "rogue" gcc
2.9.6 compiler whose release is disapproved by the gcc members (for
chapter and verse, see their recent announcements in c.o.l.a). It
produces code that is largely incompatible with code compiled by other
compilers, in particular 2.7.2, 2.8.1, 2.9.5. (I can't run C
executables compiled with gcc 2.8.1 on it). It doesn't surprsie me that
java compiled elsewhere doesn't work either. It surprises me more that
it gets as far as segfaulting.

My favoirite tool is midnite commander. just install the rpm for mcserv
and mc on both machines. then, enter this:
(with mc up)
cd ftp:[EMAIL PROTECTED] and then it will ask for you password,
and from there you just highlight files of directories, andc copy or
move them around. Of course this will only work between two machiens
that you have an account with, though it is posisble I guess to use
anonymous, I just never tried it.

I assume that is the USB version? I have a 1220S (SCSI) that works fine.
So I think if you can get USB working properly, the scanner should
be supported. Take a look at sane and xsane:

Did you place the menu.lst file in the same directory as the stage1 and stage2
files? If you did, and it's till not working, I would suggest trying to
reinstall GRUB, but this time specifying the location of the menu.lst file.
For example, when I installed mine I did:
install (hd0,1)/grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0,1)/grub/stage2 (hd0,1)/grub/menu.lst
If that doesn't work, there is a grub mailing list that you could always
ask one.

Most likely the original netscape was installed as an rpm package
and you installed the new netscape from a tar archive. Try
rpm -q netscape
and see if it doesn't tell you you have netscape 4.72. If so,
rpm -e netscape will remove it, and if your new netscape is
from a tar archive, it probably won't affect it. But my opinion
is that you will be better off if you remove the version you
installed from a tar archive and get a more up to date
rpm package for netscape. The recent rpm packages are 4.75. If
you go to the RedHat ftp site or a mirror site you will find
an rpm package for netscape. There are actually two packages
you need: netscape-common and netscape-communicator (or navigator).
I don't quite understand why the system came with 4.72. 4.75 is
part of the RH6.2 distribution.

When I have the mouse plugged directly into my machine (Abit KA7,
800MHz Athlon, bios patch RY), everything works great, including the
scroll wheel. When running the mouse through my KVM switch and boot
into Linux, the mouse jumps around and sends random button-press
events. If I dual-boot into Windows 98, everything works great. When
I boot into Redhat 7.0, the mouse is erratic.
Any ideas? For now I changed the protocol from "IMPS/2" to "PS/2" in
my XF86Config-4 file and the mouse works, but no scroll wheel.
Why would the mouse continue to work in Windows but not Linux? Any
other troubleshooting advice?

I am setting up wu-ftp and it is working great. In one of the HOWTO's they

Debian has -dev packages for those KDE packages for which it makes sense.
There is also a task-kde-devel, which presumably pulls in everything a KDE
developer needs. I don't use KDE myself.

me too.

that's exactly what i did. while it's annoying to not have all the
hardware working, not enough linux programs use the wheel for it to
matter all that much to me.

my only guess is that the kvm switch garbles some part of the mouse
messages in some way and that windows ignores those garbled parts.
you could use two mice. the monitor is the main one since it's
bulkiest and most expensive. two keyboards would be annoying too.
however, if you have double anything, i suppose the mouse is
reasonably cheap and takes very little space.
