In the latest version of LinuxPPC I had so much trouble trying to get the
HelixCode stuff to do what I want that I finally ripped it all out. Go
to the central RPM repository or some such place, get original packages
and install those instead of Helix Code.

to give an answer but not a very exact one, I would say it is because of
permission problems (obviously) going back to how pppd is called it
seems. Can anyone give a better, more precise reason?

>
> B. Can I fix this, and, if yes, how do I do it?

yes, by following what the error message says

>
>
> 2. A. How do I install pppd with the SUID bit set?

you won't need to install it that way. Since it is already installed you
can just change the current permissions so that the suid bit is set. To
set it find the pppd binary (probably in /usr/sbin/ but don't quote me
on that) and issue the following command:

chmod u+s pppd

This will turn on the suid bit for the owner of the pppd binary.

>
> B. What is the SUID bit, anyway?

it allows programs to be run as the actual owner of the file instead of
the owner of the process that is trying execute a binary second hand.

Another way of putting this would be the following example:
Apache normally runs as the user 'www' however some programs it has to
run are of course owned by regular users (CGI files run into this
problem). When a CGI program needs to be executed for a webpage and it
isn't owned by 'www', which is who Apache is executed as, the suid bit
can be set so that the CGI program can be executed by www on the owner's
behalf.

I believe I have explained that correctly. I always get confused myself
on what it actually does so if anyone notices I explained it incorrectly
please post the correct definition/purpose of the suid bit.

As a side note, suid programs are a security hazard so it is best to
think about what programs you are turning the suid bit on for in case it
may bring you problems later on.

I'm using Linux 6.2 with a bash text shell. How do I run Disk Druid?
I've only seen it on the installer but I'd like to mess around with
some of my partitions without using "fdisk". Is this even possibile or
is Disk Druid for installing ONLY?? Thanks

AFAIK, it's the motherboard chipset. Sounds like you've got hardware
problems to me. Compiling something large (liek gcc or the kernel) puts a
lot of strain on memory, and I've had machines with flakey hardware that
seemed fine until I tried to compile something. The symptoms of flakey RAM
or flakey cache are often random Sig-11's during compiles. You CPU might
also be overheating -- check the CPU fan and make sure you're not
over-clocking anything.

I had no problems compiling 2.95.2 under 6.0 or 6.1, though I haven't tried
it under 6.2.

windoze the ethernet card works fine and uses dhcp to grab it's IP

All that I heard was that it was a "free license", but there is a media
cost of $75 unless you find a place where they want to give it away - it
isn't currently available for simple downloading/installing.

I had a similar problem in Linux until I changed my PPP device
setting to point to /dev/ttyS0 instead of /dev/modem. Don't ask me
why that would matter since /dev/modem is pointing to /dev/ttyS0
unless it was just coincidence.... Something to try though if you
have it pointing to /dev/modem.

You could probably copy via the network to your hard disk, "loadlin" ,
and a netinstall image such as Slackware, or even a zip-drive install
image (also used to be available for Slackware), assuming you have a
parallel-port zip drive. (Or, again booting from loadlin and an
appropriate image, use a SCSI PCMCIA card and SCSI CD.)

If you're paying by the hour, a new laptop might be cheaper.

Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2000 01:48:29 -0400

I turned on 32-bit I/O with sync (hdparm -c3) using hdparm and that
doubled my transfer rate. However, I found that after I rebooted,
it was back to 16-bit again. Do you have to put hdparm in a startup
file or something? If so, which one is best?

This is for an Ultra 33 drive on a Promise Ultra 66 controller
card. My other drive for Win98 is an Ultra 66. Apparently, Linux
doesn't see them in their true default modes (ultra 33 and ultra
66). I'm afraid to try the DMA flag again (since it corrupted stuff
the last time), but I wonder if that was because I didn't have
32-bit I/O Sync turned on when I did it? Could that make a
difference?

Thanks,
Gordon

Yes, put it in /etc/rc.d/rc.local (or maybe /etc/rc.local on some
