Although not graphical, look at mc for it saves to an ASCII flat file.

Set the environment variable http_proxy.
Supposing the proxy is named "cache.myorg.org", and the proxy port is 3128,
then you might set it in one of the following two ways:
a) In csh-based shells:
setenv http_proxy http://cache.myorg.org:3128/
b) In descendants of Bourne Shell
export http_proxy=http://cache.myorg.org:3128/

Do a "df -il" and see if you are out of inodes.
There's a known problem with Mandrake 7.1's logrotate program that
slowly eats them all up.
If that is the problem, try this (from a post of mine last week):
First go into /var/log/news and do a "find . | xargs rm -f" Expect it
to run for a *long* time. Then do the same in /var/log/news.
Then go to a Mandrake mirror site and download the
logrotate-3.3-9mdk.i586.rpm and the sysklogd-1.3.31-19mdk.i586.rpm
packages and install them.

Gnumeric saves its output in XML, _very_ thinly veiled by compressing
it using gzip.
You can load in non-compressed data; it's perfectly happy with that
too.

No regularity, I think.
The site has a Cross Development Kit for several processors. The
simbolync links made references a files from another directories in the
site. They are the files used for the install of the Kit for a specific
processor.
I am a newbie. So the question I do is: does exist that right tool? Or
is not possible?

No. At least, not a safe one. There is *EXPERIMENTAL* read/write NTFS
support, but few people have tried it, and those who have frequently
report damaged NTFS partitions as a result. What's more, that support
was written for NTFS as used in Windows NT 4.0. Windows 2000 makes
changes to NTFS, so this support is even MORE dangerous for Windows
2000 NTFS partitions. (In fact, in 2.4.0-pre kernels, the code
auto-detects Win2K NTFS partitions and disables the write function even
if you explicitly enable it.)

This is not strictly Linux but - I have just installed KDE2 in my
Linux box and I am most unimpressed. It not only doesn't look quite
as good as its 1.* counterpart, but the extra goodies added are not
all that great: Konqueror and Koffice are on par with free tools that I
already have, but they don't add all that much (if anything) extra.
This is of course just my opinion, but I am tempted to get back
to 1.*, or to ditch it altogether in favor of Gnome.
What a big disappointment.

Just an idea:
What about your entries in /etc/nsswitch.conf concerning netgroup ?
It should be "nis files", not only "files".

Confusion on my end: plain redhat 7 system, nothing tinkered with.
"rpm -q -a | grep mod_perl " tells me that mod_perl-1.24-4 is installed.
But "http -l" (apache 1.3.12) tells me that only http_core.c and
mod_so.c are compiled in. No mod_perl listed.
Would mod_perl be loaded dynamically, or does apache require
recompiling?

I'm sorry that I just jump into the discussion like this ;-)
Alot of people have used Windows good or bad it's up to you but why
does everybody "want" linux/bsd/etc to be like Windows ?
Yes you have been getting used to the tools in the windows enviroment,
for some reason however you have choosen to look at an alternative OS.
WHY ?
If you were so happy with the MS products why look elsewere if the
things you need works just fine ?
If you need a feature or better uptime etc. and you look at Linux why
would you want it to be like Windows ?
If it were Windows you wouldn't gain the feature you want, would you ?
Setting up a Apache test server takes the time to install e.g. RH on
the machine and away you go (if you choose to install Apache at the
installation (custom or Server profile)).
It might not be a tuned/well-performing site but as a test it works
just fine.

Well there are alot of good information about using Kickstart and will
do the same thing. Yes you need to know how you want it to be installed
but you would need the same thing for the unattended installation of
Windows NT.

Yes and No.
The public exposure is larger in the workstation market yes.
Were do every computer vendor want to get a bigger market, the server
and infrastructure market,why ?
Better revenue/profit, if a customer buys your servers they are more
likely to consider your workstations.
I think that company->company the server market has more influence but
from end-user->end-user the workstation market has more influence.
Quite obvious actualy.
> I do not need the GUI apps but find them many times faster so will
> stick with NT Workstation until the right set of apps are Gnomed.
Yes and No (again ;-))
I know what you mean though (I have a MCSE certification so I'm not
completly unaware of the MS products ;-)) but some things are so much
easier in unix/linux then Win NT.
I do however think that Linux is not quite there for the general user
but IMHO I think Linux makes you want to learn new things.

Yes, you're right, its NE2000 compatable. its an ISA card. Not sure
what you mean about the PnP/dynamically assicned recources, but i
turned off the PnP for the card, so it runs on IRQ 12 at address
0x02A0. So it probably doesn't make a difference. As for new
drivesr, i'm using kernel 2.2.16 that comes w/ Mandrake, and the NE
module thats in it. This problem first started w/ RH, when me and
another guy on my floor had this problem. When he installed mandrake,
his net connection went throught the roof, mine stayed the same.

Sure. Did you make sure that your boot partition on the new whopping
huge drive is within the first 1023 cylinders of the drive? That was my
problem when I got (what sounds like) the same error you have here. I
bought a new big drive, replaced my old teeny drive, completely forgot
about that 1023 cylinder thing, and didn't specify a separate /boot
partition when I ran fdisk. Tried to boot, lilo got stuck. It took me
about 5 more failed installations before I remembered the cylinder
limitation. On the 7th (:<) install, I used fdisk to create a /boot
partition located entirely below cylinder 1023 and was trouble free
thereafter. At least with respect to lilo and boot issues, that is...
> another wierd thing that occurred to me - the LILO docs say that when it
> stops after the first `L', and error code should be displayed indicating
> whats going wrong. mine does not display an error code at all.
hmmm. I never heard that lilo is supposed to actually display an error
message. The error code I think you are referring to is inherent in how
many letters of "lilo" get spelled out at boot. That is, if you only
get an "l" that means one thing, but if you get an "li" that means
something else, and "lil" means yet another condition.
Look Here (and this isn't just for SUSE):
http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/kgw_lilo_errmsg.html
It mentions that just getting the "l" can be a sign of a geometry
mismatch, which I _think_ may be a function of this /boot partition
thing I'm talking about above.
Good luck
