Except if the code in question uses rotate (left or right)
instructions. I *believe* they were included in MIPS microcode in the
(relatively) old days, but not now. Whereas both IA and PPC (at least
the RS6k version, I never worked on any Mac) do have them in microcode.
And sometimes it makes helluva difference. Almost any cryptanalysis
software nowadays uses them (esp. ROL) *very* heavily. And we all
surmise (and some of us know for sure) that SIGINT (the acronym, not
signal 2) becomes more and more important...
Now, this is not to take any one side: I just wanted to point out a
proviso that I think should be included in the paragraph above.

What do you get now when you type

hwclock

If it's off, try

hwclock --systohc

I suggest the following procedure:

1. Run timeconfig. Choose "Hardware clock uses GMT" (AKA UTC) and veryify
   the timezone setting.
2. Use timetool or date -s to set the system clock.
3. Use hwclock to set the hardware clock:

   hwclock --utc --systohc

This uses the system time to set the hardware clock but uses UTC. This
ensures that the time is set correctly when you "fall back" or
"spring forward" (assuming that happens in your locale).

I have an internet connection (dialup) that needs to be activated by

the shell command to start the connection (the script is owner root and

Unfortunately xdm will restart X immediately, so if you want to stop X,

As the MIME type subtly indicates, the ASF video format is a Microsoft
proprietary format. The closest I've ever come to ASF support under Linux
are a few players that will play audio but no video from these files.

I've been looking for a Linux-based ASF player for some time now, and as
soon as I find one I assure you it'll have links to it plastered all over
my web page.

<BOGGLE> the best thing about linux is netscape????

The *only* app that crashes *hard* on Linux is netscape.

Netscape(the company) love linux cos there's no competition on it.
Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't use anything else under windows, but seems to me
that netscape on linux sucks so badly because they don't have to try.

There are a few others coming out, but are either bloated or feature-free.

If CISC processors are so much better than RISC, why do I see all these
non-x86 machines from video games to desktop machines, to
refrigerator-sized behemoths using RISC processors? With the really heavy
iron, cost isn't really as much a consideration as it is with typical x86
machines. Logically, then, these really beefy machines would use THE best
performing technology and ignore the cost. If what you say is true, then
these beefy machines would be using CISC processors. But they don't, so I
guess that means CISC can't beat RISC in raw CPU power. And since cheap
things like video game consoles use RISC nowadays, I guess that means that
CISC isn't the biggest bang for the buck either.

You're making the classic mistake of assuming that clock speed is
a good metric of performance. If we're just talking about the CPU, you
need to consider how many ticks it takes for common tasks to be completed.
With RISC, most tasks take far less ticks than with CISC. There are lots
of other things that make RISC much better than CISC, but I really don't
want to post a book here.

Getting the card manufacturers to open their specs will be much more
helpful for getting good hardware acceleration on x86 unicies.

RISC hardware isn't necessarily expensive; My G4 450 Mhz running
YellowDog Linux (128MB, ATA hard drive) spanks awfully my SGI 1200
700MHZ Server (256 MB RAM, U2SCSI HD) and even supports the same network

Ah, G4 450 is now 1/2 (or less) the price of SGI1200, and 1/8 of

Subject: removing control characters from text files
Date: Wed, 30 Aug 2000 11:26:07 +0200

Hi,

I'm running HP-UX 10 (not sure if this is the right group but couldn't find
any other!!)
I'm currently working on a Perl CGI script which stores information in pipe
delimited flat ascii files. The records are separated by newlines (\n). The
input for the database comes from a web form, one field is a textarea. In
perl I've substituted any carriage returns/newlines in the textarea with the
html equivalent, which works fine. The problem i'm having is that the
control character ^M also appears in the file, so after modifying it several
times through the web the record gains a huge long string of ^M and
unwanted html.

Is there anyway I can either stop the control characters from being put into
the file in the first place or remove them using 'tr' or 's' perhaps? I
tried writing a script to substitute \012 and \015 with nothing, but that
didn't work... any other suggestions? I'm kinda stumped on this and figured
that it wouldn't differ too much on my HP-UX box than on a linux system.

Thanks

Probably the easiest way to do this is create a .forward file in the user's
home directory. Put all the addresses you want the mail to be forwarded to.
If you want it kept locally, don't forget to add your local e-mail address to
the file!

For instance, let's say my e-mail address is [EMAIL PROTECTED], and I also want it to
go to [EMAIL PROTECTED] My .forward file would look like this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

That's all!

Didn't he say he wanted something that _wasn't_ slow and buggy and _can_

Many PC BIOSes allow that check to be turned off.

Not necessarily. After all, most servers are supposed to run months, even
years without direct overseeing. Also, ssh is your friend :-)

Had this been an actual emergency, we would have
fled in terror, and you would not have been informed.

You may want to hunt for rpm's at www.rpmfind.net.

Look at the chkconfig command, ntsysv (menu-driven tool), or tksysv (X-based
