Yes, ran make install_modules.

Yes, kernel built without errors. Even stranger, I have a driver for my
Maestro-2 soundcard that I compiled and installed under 6.0 without any
problems. When I explicitly recompile it and try and install it
post-upgrade, I get the same error of unresolved references! It's not at
all clear to me why!! ..../Taras

Beats me. I get:

valinux:root[/home/jdbeyer]# echo Test >/dev/nst0
valinux:root[/home/jdbeyer]# mt -f /dev/nst0 status
SCSI 2 tape drive:
File number=1, block number=0, partition=0.
Tape block size 0 bytes. Density code 0x24 (DDS-2).
Soft error count since last status=0
General status bits on (81010000):
 EOF ONLINE IM_REP_EN
valinux:root[/home/jdbeyer]# mt -f /dev/nst0 rewind
valinux:root[/home/jdbeyer]# cat /dev/nst0
Test
valinux:root[/home/jdbeyer]#

I use BRU for may backups and it automatically labels the tapes. It even
prevents your overwriting them before they expire. Mine are set to expire after
6 days, since my daily tapes are rotated on a weekly basis. But you need not
run BRU of course. You can get the same results with find and cpio and a little
other programming.

Red Hat (I do not know about other distributions) puts each user into a
group of his own. It is a simple matter to make a new group named 'user'
and add the two users you want to the /etc/group file. Here is a line from
my /etc/group file:

seti:x:501:jdbeyer,seti2

This means that users jdbeyer and seti2 have the same group permissioins as
the rest of the seti group.

You need not change anything in /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow for this.

I believe Red Hat have a reason to put each user into his own group, but I
forget what it was. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but it does not
mean it will be best for you. Is there a reason why you want them all in
the same group?

That may be because people using Red Hat and are not having problems are not
posting complaints and questions.

I have used only Red Hat 5.0 and 6.0. I put Red Hat 5.0 on my first computer
after my knowledgeable nephew got tired of hearing my complaints about
Windows 95. He did not say Red Hat was the best distribution, but he did say
that it was the easiest for a Linux newbie to install and get running. (That
was in early 1988.) It was pretty easy to install, though I did have to do it
twice because I screwed up the first time. But it worked well enough that I
did not try any other distributions, since I want to use my machines, not
play around with installing and configuring operating systems.

My second machine came with Red Hat Linux 6.0 preinstalled. I reinstalled it
after a day or so of testing, because I did not like the partitioning the
vendor set up, and it was easier to reinstall than to figure out another way
to adjust the size of / and to move /home to the other disk drive. On this
machine, an install takes about 15 minutes.

> redhat, as it is not too good at all! and Riddled with buggs!

What bugs? I do not say it has no bugs, but I have experienced very few. Few
enough that this machine has been up over 40 days and nights. I rebooted it
back then because I had to power down to replace my tape drive. I have had
only one crash on this machine since I got it in February, and it was not a
true crash, just that the windowing system locked up completely and I could
not get to it. The OS was up (I have other evidence about that), so I waited
until the background job completed (I could tell by watching the light on the
disk controller), and hit the panic button.

I now have the two machines networked together, so if it happens again, I
should be able to login with ssh and fix it without hitting the panic button.
I never get the equivalent of the Blue Screen Of Death, as I did three times
a week with Windows.

HI all, I have hunted round for a solution to this problem but haven't
found any documentation on it.
When i try to login into my Linux box, via telnet or the console, I
receive the following error message 'dev/sdc0/.infs01/oldLOGIN missing'
and it will not let me login. I can ftp to the server and also use
Webmin.

I am trying to find the equvilint file on another box but can't find
one.

Any suggestions, ideas??? If possible could you cc: me as i would like
to get this problem sorted ASAP!

Thanks

Here a little more detail on my setup:

[root@lou2 /]# ls -l /dev/nst0
crw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 128 May 5 1998 /dev/nst0

[root@lou2 /]# echo $TAPE
/dev/nst0

[root@lou2 /]# mt rewind

[root@lou2 /]# mt status
SCSI 2 tape drive:
File number=0, block number=0, partition=0.
...

[root@lou2 /]# mt tell
At block 0.

[root@lou2 /]# echo Test >/dev/nst0

[root@lou2 /]# mt status
SCSI 2 tape drive:
File number=1, block number=0, partition=0.
...

[root@lou2 /]# mt tell
At block 2.

[root@lou2 /]# mt rewind

[root@lou2 /]# mt status
SCSI 2 tape drive:
File number=0, block number=0, partition=0.
...

[root@lou2 /]# mt tell
At block 0.

[root@lou2 /]# cat /dev/nst0
Test

Note: "File number" changed after echo Test; but "block number"
didn't. Also, "mt tell" track this action.

It is not a real virus. Your BIOS is brain dead (not uncommon). It is
detecting LILO in the MBR, and *thinks* it is a virus. Viruses under
Linux/Unix are rare to non-existent.

You should disable the BIOS virus detection code.

You need to update /etc/lilo.conf and add a section like:

other=/dev/hda1
        label=NT
        table=/dev/hda

re-run lilo and reboot. Then select NT at Lilo's Boot: prompt.

(adjust 'hda1' and 'hda' to suit your system.)

That's because it isn't /dev/hdc anymore (ide-scsi makes it look like
it is a scsi device).
Try "mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom" and see if that works

Odd, it should still show up here. Is the ide-scsi module actually
loaded at this point?
Try insmod ide-scsi then cdrecord -scanbus and see if it shows up
then.
