I may have to rebuild my Linux partitions. What is the best
way to backup my /, /boot partitions so I can restore it easily?
It is a stand-alone system and I am a learning the Sys Admin
side of Linux.

TIA.

I guess you mean a SMTP server. There are many ways:

a) just save to a file and use sendmail on it.
b) pipe it to the "mail" program
c) Use a library. I use mimelib, which you can find in the kdesupport package
(but doesn't rely on KDE at all), but it's C++.

I wonder could it depend on your window manager. Some time ago I posted
a message enquiring about loss of cut & paste under KDE (also, Mandrake
7.1 distro., I think, but it could be RH 6.2, as I have switched between
them once or twice). I got no answer, so I switched to FVWM and
cut&paste returned.

I have a PS/2 mouse, and I'm using Emulate3Buttons.

Best regards,

I recently installed Mandrake 7.1 on a 1 year old Dell Optiplex 500 MHz PIII
(the first machine I ever ran that took the doze out of Windows). I find
the graphics based programs that came with Mandrake (both KDE and Gnome)
rather slow-loading, 20 to 30 seconds and more sometimes (especially
Netscape!). Most commands executed at the command line are reasonably fast,
though loading a small file in emacs took longer than I thought it would.
My own non-expert guess is that some aspects of this version of Linux,
particularly the GUI based elements, are not fully optimized to exploit the
hardware. So do not expect miracles just from a hardware upgrade. I
suspect that the improved versions of KDE and gnome that are becoming
available may make some real difference.

I am trying to learn Linux in order to use emacs in a fully enabled unix
environment (as opposed to Windows versions of emacs), so I can wait for the
graphical stuff to become better optimized for speed. Right now the
graphical interfaces basically make it possible for me to get a system
installed and up and running without having to learn how to configure all
the tables and configuration files that need tweaking manually--that is
truly the most formidable aspect of unix-type systems for those of us who
are not primarily interested in computers for their own sake. If I had to
learn to do all of that myself, I would be forced to stay with Windows.

Cheers,
Jim Fitzgerald

Hi!

I wonder if any of you guys can help me. I've just bought a CASIO
SF-4900 scheduler/organizer, and I thought it would be nice if I could
backup my data on my PC once in a while. I already know from web
pages, that softwares for PC connectivity exist, but I could find any
place to order or download. Besides, I would be more happy if I
didn't have to pay another 30$ for the software and cable.

Does anybody know the specification of the communication of this
device, or (even better) does anybody have some (preferably Linux)
program for this purpose? As far as I know, this CASIO thingy
connects to other units via a standard RS-232 serial port, so the
cable shouldn't be complicated to make...

At least can anybody tell me, where can I buy or order it? (in case
this is the only remaining option)

Thanks in advance, please answer in private mail (I'm not subscribed
to the list)

The standard Linux kernel does not include an in-kernel debugger nor does it
include a crashdump facility. See the ever-again upcoming discussion on the
kernel mailing lists on the pros & cons of this.
That aside, you can get crashdump facilities for the linux kernel from several
sources:

        http://oss.sgi.com/projects/lkcd/
        http://www.missioncriticallinux.com/

for example offer patches against the 2.2 linux kernel sources which enable
crashdumps to be taken.

But in contrast to above method: No - those dumps cannot be looked at with
gdb. Both cited projects deliver their own tools (lcrash resp. crash) for
looking at kernel crashdumps (that's why I say "crashdump" and not coredump).

Speaking of gdb: You can use that to look at your kernel as well. If you
use a serial line and configure the 'SysRQ Key' functionality, you can even
use it from remote and check in a 'hang situation' what's really going on.
You don't need a crashdump if you can look at the live system. Anyway, it
may still do something, may it not ?

Subject: NT + Linux dual boot, can I repair damaged NT loader?
Date: Tue, 03 Oct 2000 17:08:48 +0100

I want to dual boot Linux + NT 4.0. The disk is properly partitioned and
has been happily running Linux for the last year.

Before that it had a (happily running) NT4 on another partition (NTFS).

Being (a) impatient, (b) having an attention span which just does not
stretch to the list of instructions on how to setup Linux + NT, I dashed
ahead and tried the Windows 98 method.

Consequently, I cannot boot NT4.

Is there any way I can now (easily) retrieve the situation, e.g. repair
the MBR or whatever was damaged by LILO. If it means reloading NT, I'm
afraid shall forego the exercise.

In case it matters, I'm using a Redhat 6.2 distribution, though it was
6.0 or 6.1 when I originally loaded Linux.

In fact, I would even be happy to repair NT in a manner that would
exclude Linux -- since I have a nice new machine that I could make my
(main) Linux box.

TIA,

Jon C.

It sounds like one of the libraries might be at fault.
ridcully /root# ldd /usr/bin/tcsh
        libncurses.so.4 => /lib/libncurses.so.4 (0x4001f000)
        libcrypt.so.1 => /lib/libcrypt.so.1 (0x40063000)
        libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x40090000)
        /lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x40000000)

try reinstalling the packages that contain those libs [1], it *should* fix
the problem.

[1] Or whichever versions of the libs your tcsh uses.

I don't know about being the BEST approach, but I've got an old P-100/16mb
laptop that I installed JUST the base installation of Debian Slink, and then
manually installed all the X .deb's and whatever other tools I use. With X,
it's using around 150mb. Pretty sweet. Of course, whenever I try to use a tool

If you are interested in editing ascii text output, pipe the
output of man through "col -xb".

But usually the best quality is to generate a PostScript file.
The man page for man describes the -t option as such:

-t Use /usr/bin/groff -Tps -mandoc to format the
manual page, passing the output to stdout.

Print the results in whatever way you normally print a
Postscript file.
