This is not your problem but '/dev/st0' is the auto rewind device,
'/dev/nst0' is the no rewind (Note: n) device.
What SCSI support do you have, modules and built-in? Also,
what kind of messages concerning the adapter and drive are in
'/var/log/messages'.
You should see something like this: (edited to break long lines)
Oct 9 07:19:38 lou2 kernel: \
scsi0 : AdvanSys SCSI 3.2M: PCI Ultra 16 CDB: IO E800/F, IRQ 9

Knows anyone how I could/must configure the redhat Update Agent?
The configuration of the Update Agent allows only a to enable a http-proxy,

Date: 9 Oct 2000 13:14:11 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I thought my recent adventures with this card might be of use to someone
since I finally got it working. Here goes.
I bought a genuine Creative Labs SoundBlaster 16 because I knew it
worked with Linux and I had used one before. The only difference was
that this was the PCI version - or so I thought. It worked straight
away in Windows 95 so I went on to configure it in Linux. I don't have
sndconfig or any of its dependencies so I used the kernel config tool
to set up the SoundBlaster drivers with the IO, IRQ and DMA settings I
figured out with some DOS sound utilities that came with the card. No joy.
So after a lot of messing around trying different settings and
combinations of kernel modules I thought I'd try the PCI Utilities tools
(http://atrey.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~mj/pciutils.html) to see if the card
actually advertises its own parameters or allows you to set them up
explicitly. Imagine my surprise when the card promptly announced itself
as an Ensoniq ES1371 Audio-PCI 97!
So not a SoundBlaster of any sort, then. No wonder the SB drivers don't
work. Once I knew what the card actually was it was the work of a few
moments to determine that (a) my 2.0 kernel didn't support it, but (b)
drivers for this exact card are present in 2.1.x upwards. So having
installed 2.2 and gone through the tedious process of setting up the
drivers for everything else I have on my system, I checked the box that
says 'Ensoniq ES1371 Audio-PCI 97' and bingo. It worked.
Now nowhere on the card, in its pitifully inadequate documentation or
in the software and help files that come with it does it tell you what
make and model of sound card it is. Worse than that, it masquerades
as a SoundBlaster 16 when it patently isn't. So for anyone else
struggling with one of these (and I imagine there must be a few of
them, given that this is about the only make of sound card you can
buy in Tottenham Court Rd at the moment) - now you know ;)

No problems with a K6-2 here either (though I have read that genuine
Pentiums are better for 3D games as the on-chip floating point support
is superior to the AMD and Cyrix chips - corner-cutting or Intel FUD? You
decide).

There's a client called EveryBuddy, which does a pretty good job of
linking into most common IM services, (i.e. MSN, AOL, Yahoo, ICQ), so
you might like to have a look at that. Even if it's not what you're
looking for, the source code might help you on your way.
Failing that, have a poke around on http://freshmeat.net - they tend to
list pretty much everything.

There's a utility called bbkeys, (primarily written for the BlackBox
window manager, but I believe usable on most), which allows you to
define keyboard shortcuts for most things.... including an ExecCommand
function. If you can find a console command to do what you want, then
you can assign a key-combination to it.

Hi all!
For my software practicum we have to create a makefile that will also
install the software with a simple command. I have developed my
practicum in Windoze only, but the final presentation has to be done in
Linux. So my question is:
How do you usually install software in Linux? I think it's mostly like
copying the program files into a directory and maybe setting some env
var(s)... is that correct? Another thing I don't know is how to handle
all the users. I have preferences in my program, which I save to disk,
but I think it's not a good idea to have one program installation for
each user just because of that.
Thanks for your suggestions!

Thanxx for your tip!
The SuSe handbook (worth reading!!) documents quite well which module can be
used with specific soundcards (or vice versa).
My Soundblaster PCI 128 can be used with es1370.
I think SB uses the ensonique chip.

When done, don't forget to set a new password using 'passwd'.

Not all CDROMs can rip audio from an audio CD. My ancient 2x ATAPI drive
won't do that either - and SCSI emulation won't do it either.
Basically, you need a new CDROM drice.

why don't you store the preferences in the home directory of the user
like all the other linux coders do?
there is an environment variable which handles the path of the home
directory and then store the preferences in a directory called
".programname" that should work.

I have used the dd command to create an image of simple (RedHat 7.0

dd if=/dev/cdrom of=cdimage
It works fine. But given a more complex disk (data AND audio, multiple

data track in the first session?

Well, not a bad idea, but (there's always a 'but', isn't there?)
One of the virtues of a good backup strategy is the ability to take
off-site your backups (how far, from next shield to next country, it
deppends). What if the problem with your disks is a broken controller,
or a physical disaster (this coffee cup over the box)? Then your working
systems goes out along with your recovery... not a good idea!!

syslog(8) has no guarantee's of message delivery. So why should
syslog/via/TCP make any guarantee's ?
Is your network so unreliable that you won't use syslog across it
you could try to syslog locally and periodically transfer the logs
via a TCP service.
