Hi !

I use PHP 4.0 and mySQL 3.2* (..latest version) and I got this message
everytime with any phpscripts (that I downloaded from phpresource.com
for
testing), might have something to do with mySQL.

"Fatal error: Call to undefined function: mysql_connect() in
phpdbform/phpdbform_db.php on line 36"

The errors were very consistant with every php+mysql application. If any
of
you out there who are in the know with these things, could u please help
me
get to the solution. Thanks heaps.

Hello,

I am currently charged with developing a test in Linux Admin (SuSE) and
need some people to review the questions that are currently in beta.
The test should be there for the next couple of days and I would
appreciate any comments about the test that could be provided. If
interested, the beta test is available at the following URL:

http://www.brainbench.com/testcenter/brainbench/t1.jsp?core=%
2Fbetapins.html

making sure that the URL is one line. All feedback and comments will
be taken into account. A beta test consists of 32 items (2 independent
sets of 16) and the amount of time required varies from person to
person.

If anyone has any questions or comments, please E-mail me with the
contact information below.

Hallo,

So when I have two kernels installed, I also get two System.map files, and
each one is specific for the kernel it was compiled with? So once the kernel
loads, it looks for the file named 'System.map' in the /boot dir?

Ok, but how does the kernel know which System.map to use then, if for
example we have 2 kernels in /boot, like:

A) "vmlinuz.2.2.13 & System.map.2.2.13"
B) "vmlinuz.2.2.16 & System.map.2.2.16"

Does it 'autodetect' it by filename extension?
Do I have to make a symlink to 'System.map' each time I want to boot a
different kernel?
Can I tell the bootloader to select a different system.map for each kernel?

Is this stuff covered in a HOWTO? I couldnt find it, but then again, maybe I
havent searched well enough :)

Thanks for any info anyone might have on this.

Subject: problems patching kernel
Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 13:15:33 GMT

I'm trying to install Hedrick's IDE patch over the source of my 2.2.16
kernel (from a fresh RedHat 7.0 install). I'm trying to get the HPT370
controller on my motherboard (Abit KA7) to work.

I installed the source rpm off of the cd. It installed correctly
under /usr/src/linux. I put the patch in the /usr/src/linux directory,
bunzip2'd it and ran:
  patch -p1 --dry-run < ide.2.2.16.patch

A bunch of hunks succeed, then it stops because it can't find files
under arch/mips/. The source tree on my machine has only an arch/i386
branch, nothing else. The patch program stops at this point, asking me
what file it should patch.

What should I do at this point? Is there some way I can tell it to
ignore non i386 files? (my machine is an Athlon 800) Is the source rpm
missing some files? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

While I use Quicken 99 on my old machine when it is running W95 (and I
run W95 on it only to run Quicken and TurboTax), I think those programs
are pretty crummy. Furthermore, Intuit's support is as bad as
Microsoft's.

Whenever I check the WINE site, they never seem to state that current
versions of Quicken run, and the last time I looked, they never said that
TurboTax runs. I do not see how they can ever get TurboTax to run because
there is no time for them to test it between when it comes out, typically
in late December for the federal taxes, and mid to late January for the
state taxes, and when you need to file your taxes.

Unfortunately, I have found no satisfactory substitute. GnuCash has been
recommended, but it seems to still be in the Alpha Development Stage,
with changes daily. I have been unsuccessful in importing my Quicken data
into it. It imports pieces of it, but makes a mess of the whole thing.

No way to answer this short of trying them for yourself, because your needs
and resources will differ from those of anyone else. I use Red Hat because
my nephew told me it was the easiest to install at the time (mid 1998), and
that may have been true. It installs quite easily, and has never been bad
enough to make me want to switch.

> ...and something else..
> which is the best: KDE or Gnome (which one should I start to use?)

Here, too, you will need to try both. I know Red Hat 6.0 and up supply both
and if you install both you can switch quite easily from one to the other.
It is my understanding that KDE is more reliable than GNOME, but I have not
used KDE enough to verify that. I find KDE "too fancy" and prefer GNOME, but
this may be due to the fact that when I originally installed Red Hat Linux
6.0, it installed GNOME and not KDE. This machine has both installed, so my
other users could use KDE if they wished.

You have to add a literal '+' before the mode to achieve this. E. g.

        $ find -perm +g+s

will find all files which have GUID bit set.

2. type in - wvdial
    output - cannot open /dev/modem: Input/output error

anyone with any suggestions?

Storm isn't BY Debian, but it is BASED ON Debian. It's basically Debian
plus some GUI configuration tools. I don't know a lot about it, though;
I tried an installation into a VMware machine, but it stopped working
very soon after installation (I think its DHCP client didn't get along
well with VMware).

As to which is better, that's a subjective matter. For my thoughts on
several Linux distributions (not yet Storm, but I do have information on
Debian), see:

http://www.rodsbooks.com/distribs/

> which is the best: KDE or Gnome (which one should I start to use?)

Again, this is a subjective matter. Personally, I intensely dislike
several aspects of KDE, and somewhat dislike several aspects of GNOME. I
keep hoping one or both will improve, because they've also both got some
nice features. In the meantime, I use neither. Other people have other
opinions on the matter. Your best bet is to try both -- say, a week with
KDE, then a week with GNOME. You can then make an informed choice based
on your own personal preferences.

Not quite. DOS has never been an operating system; it is just a program loader
and file system.

Calling DOS an OS because it loads first is like calling lilo an operating
system.

Yes it will!

It will look for all directories which match the regular
expression *.obj, and it will decend into each one that it finds
and remove *all* files, and the directory too.

That is clearly not what you want.

To accomplish what you want use the "find" command to
search for files and the -exec option to delete them.

  find . -name '*.obj' -exec rm {} \;

With 'find / -perm u+r -print' I can search all files, *only* the read-flag

also.

Subject: Lilo not found in MBR Dell Poweredge RAID

This is a tough one. Sorry for the length. It is necessary.

I have a Dell Poweredge 4400 w 6 36bb drives configured RAID 5
(actually two identical machines). The machine originally had RedHat
6.2 preloaded on it. When I received the machines, the partitions were
out of whack, so I decided to reinstall. I remade the container and
scrubbed the disks and proceeded with the install. Note that this is
hardware RAID, so there should be no issues with raidtab, etc.

Once I acquired the proper controller (Dell Percraid) I was able to do
an expert install, fdisk, and load everything. The only trouble came
when the machine rebooted. Instead of going into LILO, I received the
Hit F1 to retry boot or F2 to enter setup message. At this point I can
boot with the boot floppy I created, and can traverse the entire
filesystem, run commands, etc. this leads me to believe the problem
lies entriely with MBR. Here are some of the things I have tried:

In bios/Raid configuration I created a non-RAID volume during one
attempt, on which to place /boot. This didn't work, and Dell and Red
Hat both told me I should be able to use the entire RAID array.

I ran /sbin/lilo after boot--no effect.

I tried re-scrubbing drives-no effect.

Tried mounting boot as separate partition, and not doing so. No
difference.

Upon Dell's suggestion, I tried not creating a boot disk (uh huh--going
through motions) No. (Dell was full of helpful suggestions--like why
don't you try it again and call us back, or suggesting drivers that
wouldn't even allow the hard drives to be recognized.)

Red Hat suggested I try loading 7.0, saying it should solve the issue.
Same result.

Below is my lilo.conf
boot=/dev/sda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b

(The enterprise section is a product of 7.0 . 6.2 liloconf is the same
sans the enterprise section.)

Ihave installed the 2 systems a combined 20 times, and am past being
mad. I would certainly NOT recommend Dell products to
anyone who wishes to run Linux (I know, should have checked VA) They
have since passed me on to Redhat, who are being quite slow in their
promise to load a poweredge and try to duplicate my problem. Any help
would be appreciated.

Hi,

Does anyone know how to compile kernel 2.2.16 in order to be able
to use a parallel CD-RW?

I had it working on older kernels, but with this one no such luck.

I included scsii emulation, general scsii and scsii cdrom support.
I included parallel port and pc-style parallel port
I included parallel port ide, epat and general support.

insmod parport
insmod paride
insmod epat
insmod pg

The CD-RW (HP7100e) is detected.
cdrecord -scanbus shows the writer.
cdrecord -v dev=... blank=all gives something like "cannot ioctl...."

Any ideas?

Erik
