Or, go with the various Belkin solutions. I use the Belkin OmniCube 4-port
KVM switch, which works just fine for me, but really only handles up to
about 1024x768. The Omniview SE does up to 1280x1024 (80Hz), but costs
a little more ($144 vs. $112 at buy.com). If you have a fancy monitor with
both BNC and VGA connectors, you can use it to switch between two of the
machines. I use this to support my main machine running at 1600x1200, then
switch over to the OmniCube to handle a couple of other machines (I still
use the OmniCube to switch the mouse over for all the machines). It's a
little cumbersome, but it's better than crawling around on the floor, and
it was pretty cheap....
I'm using it right now to switch over to my Win98 box doing a CD grab, and
over to my Linux box to log in on the console, and back to this to type,
well...this....

I need the dbe module for xfree86. Apparently, this module typically
lives in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libdbe.a. I'm running a Debian
2.2 system with the xfree86 version 3.3.6 package installed. But my
system does not even have a /usr/X11R6/lib/modules directory.
I tried searching Debian's website, but could not find any useful
information.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
MG

Linux has several distributions which are specifically designed for use
in small systems. I would imagine that one of these "mini" Linux
variations would be your BEST bet. However, I am not personally
knowledgeable enough to give you specifics, but a good place to get more
info would be:

You might actually be able to find some folks there interested in
helping with the project!
I hope this helps.

substitution.

Subject: /boot/System.map and /boot/module-info
Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2000 00:07:14 -0230
Hello,
I have upgraded the kernel manually and from time to time I see
some errors show up. For example my /var/log/messages has:
Oct 23 11:30:24 tulip kernel: Symbol table has incorrect version number.
Oct 23 11:30:24 tulip kernel: Cannot find map file.
I would like to know what the files /boot/System.map and /boot/module-info
are all about. Under my /boot directory (Red Hat 6.2) these are symbolic
links to System.map-2.2.16-3 and module-info-2.2.16-3 which makes me think
that the contents of these files depends on the kernel version and perhaps
also on the kernel options chosen at build time. Could someone please
provide me with some insight on the purpose of these two files?
BTW, I have a Zip 250 parallel port drive and I would like the system to
boot without launching the kudzu menu that tells me I have inserted or
removed the Zip drive from the computer. Is it possible to do this and
still have the computer autodetect the Zip drive and insert the right
module (imm.o) if necessary?
Thanks,
Neil

Subject: help with configuring linux mail server
Date: 24 Oct 2000 02:45:33 GMT
Hi Everyone,
I need help configuring my mail server which is running on Linux.
I have a small network that uses linux as both a
firewall and mail server in the same box. This
linux serves as a gateway for my internal network
(i.e. 172.16.1.0/24 network). This linux box has
an external ip address of 199.0.216.222 network.
Everything is working properly such as NAT, ipchains.
Bottom, there is no problem as fas as connectivity
is concerns. As of of now, there are NO restrictions
on this box (i.e. default policy is ACCEPT all).
Over the weekend, I install mail server service on
this linux box. I also install POP2, POP3 and IMAP server
on this box as well because I would like users on my
private network to be able to receive and send mail
to users on the Internet. Here is my problem:
1) I can send mail to users on the Internet as long as
I am at the linux box (or telnet to it). However, users
on my private network would like to use email as well.
They use Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express
running on Microsoft Windows (I know, pitty me) to send
and receive mails. These users have valid account on the
linux box. There are no network connectivity problems.
I have been able to configure the Outlook
Express to receive emails on the POP3 server on the linux
box but I can not use SMTP to send mail to Internet users
via Outlook Express. How do I make this to work via
Outlook Express or even Microsoft Outlook? Please help.
Note: I don't have any restrictions as far as TCP wrapper
is concerns
Many Thanks.

I've used sendmail for years, and agree with the poster who suggested
the O'Reilly Bat Book.
Recently though, I've been experimenting with a sendmail substitute,
postfix. I really like it a lot so far.
I'm using it exclusively at home, and on some workstations at work. I
doubt I ever consider suggesting that we switch the mail hub at work
over though, way too scary, thousands of users, and it works great with
sendmail. If things went wrong...
postfix is definately simpler to set up however. Still, despite some
claims that all you have to do is read the comments in the files in
/etc/postfix, I would reccomend going to www.postfix.org and reading
about it first.
