I would go /usr/local/bin, not /usr/bin, if I wanted it there at all (which I
do not). You might look at "File System Hierarchy Standard" (I have version
2.1) edited by Daniel Quinlan, dated April 12, 2000, that goes into all this.
I no longer have a URL, but I got it off the Internet, so a search engine
should be able to find it for you.

I use 24 meg, that is about 2/3 full, because I keep the current SMP and UP
versions of the kernel and a previous SMP and UP version. But you sure do not
need 32 meg.

> Also, 64-128 MB for / is plenty,

I guess it depends on what you put in /. On my machine, I run IBM's DB2 UDB
dbms. It must go into /usr/IBMdb2, and it takes over 100 megabytes just for
itself. Now it may be rude of them to put it there, but it is complicated
enough (when you boot the system, it starts 7 daemon processes, and when you
run it, it starts 8 more on your behalf) that I do not dare to try moving it
around. So unless you keep /usr in a separate partition from /, you may need
/ to be a little bigger. Since I have way more space than I currently need (2
9.1 Gbyte hard drives for a desktop machine), I have about 5GBytes for /, and
it is about 1/3 full. /tmp and /var are on separate partitions.

While my /home is about 6 Gigabytes, I do not think that is a good idea. If I
were running a more typical system, I would divide it into three 2-Gigabyte
partitions (/home, /home2, /home3 perhaps), so if disaster struck a
partition, 2/3 of my users would be OK and I could restore the damaged one
quicker. The reason I do not do that is that this is really a nearly
single-user system and I am a hog as far as disk space useage is concerned.

Under what circumstances might FSCK rename the "Windows" folder to
"fsck0000"? This was a problem that occured and caused great confusion, and
a lot of time to notice it. Why does it do this? Why, in fact, does FSCK do
anything to VFat drives?

When you have your desktop set up just the way you like it, select Log out from
the main menu. You will get a little dialog box asking, in essence, "Do you
really mean it?" On that dialog box is a button that is normally off that says
"Save Current Setup". Click that on and logout. That will save all your
configuration somewhere. You need not click it every time.

Please do not post one question to so many newsgroups.

My machine is on 24/7. Could logrotate have stopped working? Or is
there something else that could have filled up /var?

Can I just delete messages and it will be recreated?

It does no such thing...
At least not that I've ever noticed.
fsck runs on the FS you tell it to, but will very likely fail on a non
ext2 FS. Did you run it on a mounted partition? Unless you tell fsck to
touch a device, it will not touch it. (Do you have overlapping
partitions or something weird like that?)

OK I've recompiled ghostscript with some changes to the code to
get it to use drivers for the Epson Stylus Color 300, but can't
get RedHat to see the driver info (which it gets from gs).

I've manually edited the file
/usr/lib/rhs/rhs-printfilters/printerdb but printtool doesn't
seem to be seeing the changes.

Does anyone know how to get RH to reread the printerdb file?

Subject: multiple modems

Hi All,

Maybe an odd question but does anybody know how to hook up multiple cable
modems on route to one endconnection.

Situation:

I live in a students dorm -> I have a connection via @-home while a friend
of mine has a connection from the University (also cable).
We both have set up our own gateway using IP-masquerading (Redhat 6.2 -
zoot) (192.168.30.1 (@-home) / 192.168.30.250 (uni)) on which we supply our
coax netwerk troughout the dorm. This works fine :-)

I know that it's possible to fill in BOTH these gateways in any windows IP
configuration. But that doesn't use all of our bandwith.

My question is : is it possible to make requests for IP adresses that will
be routed to both modems e.g. frame 1 goes to modem 1 while frame 2 goes to
modem 2 etc.. etc.. ? A bit like using 2 canals on an isdn modem :-)

Thanks for the reply!

HotJava Browser on Linux.

Do you know how to install the HotJava Browser on Linux ?

In the installation instructions from the site

     http://java.sun.com/products/hotjava/3.0/install-linux.html

the command

     hjb3_0-linux.sfx jdk-location browser-location

is to be issued from the command line. But no suggestions for
either of the two arguments are given. No examples are given,
no "typical installation" is shown, nothing.

As someone just starting to learn Linux, I could use some help
from anyone who has successfully installed the HotJava Browser
on Linux.

I would really appreciate having more information than just the
two arguments "jdk-location" and "browser-location".
I mean, how should I be logged on? What directory should I be in?
Assuming I can get it installed, then how do I start it up?

Thanks for any help you can give.

I do this regularly ... I actually create custom music CD's for myself
and I use this process, all assuming you have the CD-RW and
applications installed properly:

1) Get the audio tracks off of the source CD
     - I actually wrote a VERY simple script to automate this BUT
       the manual command is:
      cdda2wav -t x
      - Where x is the track number.
      - This results in track.wav files.

2) I then rename the tracks to provide the sequence I want to name
them ie. track1.wav, track2.wav, etc. This is definetly a user
preference.

3) Now, write the tracks to the destination CD.
     cdrecord -v speed=6 dev=0,0,0 -audio *.wav
(Note the speed and dev values must be set for your particular
       system installation.)

My automation script that I use for step 1 is:
<p1>dmitton:~$ cat bin/getaudio
#!/bin/sh
MAXNUM=20
COUNTER=1

while [ 1 ]; do

  cdda2wav -t $COUNTER audio$COUNTER.wav

  if [ "$COUNTER" = $MAXNUM ]; then
       exit 0
  else
       COUNTER=$[COUNTER+1]
  fi

done
========<cut here>=========

I haven't noticed any abnormal gaps between songs BUT there are
cdrecord options to minimize this.

Good luck!

In that case they'd be 2 weeks late. That wouldn't be bad in
terms of computer industry delays, but the bottom line is, as always
in these cases, the only thing that counts is what is one the shelf
with a price tag on it right now.

And keeping on that theme of "what's out there right now," I
checked the "http://www.pocketlinux.com/" website and after bumbling
around a bit, I found that the latest downloadable image file for
Pocket Linux (available for the Compaq iPaq, VTech Helio, and Casio)
is dated Oct. 11, 2000. I haven't tried it out, but it does look
like there's progress being made.

Another thought about the Agenda and the VTech Helio: Both
of these units run on MIPS RISC CPU variations and are based on the
same kernel development sources. Also, both are based on displays
that are 160 pixels wide with 16 monochrome grey levels. So a lot
of the lower level programming work should benefit both platforms,
and in the long run, some applications might also be mutually
compatible. That will be something interesting to watch.

How does it stop? Does the bios report anything (an error message?)
How is your BIOS bootchain setup (make sure floppy is first)
If you cannot even boot DOS from a floppy to run FDISK \MBR it will be
difficult to proceed... Then you should try this in another PC. Make
sure the MBR contains something valid. (ie. use the \mbr switch of FDISK
to rewrite it)

'Widget' is a common term for an X control or primative, such as the

Hello

I am trying to run a RH 6.2 Samba print and file server at work.

I had it working fine, then all of a sudden, it decides to stop
printing. If I send a job via windows, it will spool, but sit forever.
When I try to print directly from the server I get this error:

"lpr: connect: Connection refused. Jobs queued, but cannot start

Of course, when I check, lpr *is* running... so I kill it, and restart
it as root, it starts, but I still get the same errors. If I reboot it
will kick out whatever is in the queue as it comes up, but when I go to
print anything esle -- same damn error!

I tried re-writing my /etc/printcap and it worked once for a few days,
now it is doing it again. So I tried another re-write (not that that
really solved anything), and this time it still gives me the same error.

I have been scouring the internet for answers, but have come up with
nothing.
