Can you boot to floppy if the disk is set to none in BIOS? If yes, and
it is an IDE disk, you can get Findpart at
http://inet.uni2.dk/~svolaf/utilities.htm
Set the disk to none in BIOS, boot to floppy, do
findpart pm +fat fp.txt
and post the content from fp.txt.

Ok, so the www.pathname.com site is down for some reason. This is bad
since many sites points to it.
But, the FHS is available as an RPM and also as a Debian package.
On Debian systems, install the 'debian-policy' package:
$ apt-get install debian-policy
The FHS is then available in /usr/share/doc/debian-policy/fhs/
For other GNU/Linux systems, get the RPM file at
e.g. <URL:http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=fhs>.

I would recommend do an
alias ls='ls --color=auto'
In this case ls will sense if stdout is screen, then it will do the
coloring, or if it is a pipe/file, then it won't. This is necessary
since ls puts some screen codes around filenames and you won't be
able to easily process them in, say, awk.

Checking my StarOffice installation reveals the following instructions:
'more /usr/local/StarOffice5.1/README'
... "Login as usual with your user ID and run the "setup" program from the
/cdrom/linux/office51 directory. Select the type of installation and an
installation directory. You must have write-access to the installation
directory." ...
So, it would seem that I have forgotten how the installation went precisely
and so gave slightly misdirected information. Sorry about that. After
creating a new account and following the above directions, things work as
advertised.
However, your claim that there are no installation instructions is not
correct. Still, the overall installation is not intuitive: there are
source distributions that have easier installations than this but StarOffice
did provide sufficient directions.

Subject: Linux on a ZIP 100MB?
Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2000 15:31:43 -0200
Hi,
I have a ZIP drive (100 Mb, parallel port) and I would like to know if it's
possible to install (an obviously minimal) Linux on it, including swap.
The point it that I know several people who are curious about Linux, but
don't want to install it before trying it out.
I found a HOWTO about this (ZIP-INSTALL) but it's from 1998 and it describes
the process for Red Hat 4.2. It tells to install all RPMs in the "Main"
block of /..path_to_cd../RedHat/base/comps.
With RH6.2, which I use, this is way over 100Mb (and even removing the
whopping 10Mb+ linuxconf and perl) it still remains difficult.
Could anyone please indicate me if there is a newer version of the HOWTO
anywhere, or where I can find a list of the really necessary packages? I
don't need anything too fancy, though X (in VGA mode) would be nice.
Thanks a lot in advance!

Open a shell where you normally start netscape. Do a "which test" and see
where you're getting the program "test" from. Make sure this is the
"real" test (usually /usr/bin/test) and not a test program you might have written
and placed in some directory where you might run netscape.
I get this problem all the time when I'm hacking in some temp directory
and I write something like test.c, which gets compiled into test, etc., etc.
I'm attempting to wean myself from calling test programs "test" but
old habits die hard.

Folks,
I'm new to this list, so accept my apologies if I'm asking an already

Here's my set-up
I'm running RedHat 6.2 as a server
I connect my Win2K box to it using Samba
I also use IP Masquerading to allow my Win2k box to access the web through
the RedHat box.
What happens is that I sometimes get the following message:
VFS file-max 4096 reached
Unable to load interpreter /lib/ld-linux.so.2
I've had a look for /lib/ld-linux.so.2 and it exists as a link to
/lib/ld-linux.so.1.9.5
Any ideas why I'm getting this error?

You don't need one. The disk and the card negotiate how they will
communicate (SCSI-1, 2, U2, U2W, etc.), and then you get the data from the
card as fast as it comes from the drives. You don't have to fiddle with DMA

Macs 1984, Lisa 1983? I believe Apple stole from Xenix.
MS got there foot hold becase of IBM. IBM use MSDOS IBM controled the PC
market. By the end of the '80s MSDOS was intrenched in business, who could
afford to change all there apps. Yes UNIX was there but most place could
not afford them and UNIX only worked on proprietary systems. OS2 worked for
shit. Even Macs cost more than PC's and Commadore sales had their head up
there ass. MSDOS worked on any IBM compatable PC. So
