Hi, If you would like to try out a new ftp server on your
linux box look here:

       http://netwinsite.com/surgeftp

Features include:
     Simple web admin tool for easy Management
     Report generator to find out whos downloading what
     High performance, fully threaded
     User limits e.g. XXmb/user/day to prevent abuse

We apologize in advance for this blatantly commercial post, this
is a one off post to a single hopefully appropriate news group.

 I don't think there are only very few people doing it, as it's a good
thing (tm)!

 As for the kernels: 2.2.17pre6 is the default kernel in Debian 2.2 r0
(as 2.2.16 is even more broken). [ Btw, in 2.2 r2, 2.2.18pre21 is the
default kernel for an analog reasons ;) ]

 I needed 2.2.18(prewhatever) as I needed USB. That just to
explain. Basically, its not the kernel causing the "failure" here. I
actually tested it with 2.2.17 stable AND 2.4.0-test<something> as
well.

> That block is very far upstream for a root device! Your root is at

 Actually, the problems were on two raid0s, one 12 G, the other about 5 G.

Still not finding any info about how to exactly specify the "chunk size"
in the kernel parms, I made a exhaustive test. The results for
my two raid0s are:

mdtab      : /dev/md0   raid0,16k,0,802eab69    /dev/hda3 /dev/hdc2
kernel args: md=0,0,2,0,/dev/hda3,/dev/hdc2
                    ^--"chunk size": 2 works

mdtab      : /dev/md0   raid0,8k,0,08716985     /dev/sda3 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1
kernel args: md=0,0,1,0,/dev/sda3,/dev/sdb1,/dev/sdc1
                    ^--"chunk size": 1 works

Other values for the chunk size (factor) (tested 1-16) do NOT
work. Obviously, "mdtab-value == kargs-value x 8k" must be met. This
really should be in kernel's md.txt, imho.

 My normal disk / fs layout is to only have a small /boot partition on
a bios-secure place and some swap space partition. All the rest is
root-raid. This obviously has two advantages:

1. Speed (striping).
2. No fixed space mounted partitions (which is REALLY annoying).

I don't have a clean "old-style" root partition any more to boot
from. I get security by other means. Previously, I had that, using the
raid via symlinks, but that solution has some disadvantages, besides
the fact that it is ugly !

Try this:

other=/dev/hdd1
   map-drive=0x80
   to=0x83
   map-drive=0x83
   to=0x80
   label=dos
   table=/dev/hdd

A lot of BIOSes can't seem to boot from hard drives on /dev/hdc or
/dev/hdd, so if this doesn't work, swap the Doze drive to /dev/hdb and
change the 0x83s to 0x81s. MS OSes in general get really snotty about
being the first partition on the first drive, and LILO's hackaround
works in most cases.

Alternatively, swap hdd and hda, copy the kernel image and the map file
to the Doze partition, and put LILO on the MBR of the Doze drive. Use
msattrib or ATTRIB.EXE to mark the kernel image and map file as hidden,
system, and read-only, otherwise, DEFRAG.EXE can munge things horribly
when it pessimizes your disk. HTH,

One of our lab machines was
configured with RH 6.2 --
CPU is Cyrix 233.

On November 5 I found a barely
operable system -- httpd and the
printer daemon had been shut off
and several /var/log files had
been deleted. There were three
accounts in /passwd that I did
not recognize; These were
deleted.  I restored with
6.2, but could not get XWindows
to work for ordinary users.

Tonight, December 5, I found a
dead lpd, httpd, console mouse,
and Xfont. No new accounts this
timei, but the log files were
mostly gone. I restored with RH 6.0,
but this time I did reformat
/usr -- but since this is
the end of the
semester I cannot yet reformat
/ and /home. Same problem with
XWindows -- they work great for
root, but not ordinary users,
apparently because Xfont idaemon isn't
there (some file is missing on startup).

I find it odd that it happened
on November 5 and December 5.
Can anyone provide some thoughts
on what might be happening here?

To set a file to zero length and not changing anything else, I simply
type from the commandline:

  "> filename"

(without the quotes).

Can't see any reason why this souldn't work from a shell script.

So perhaps your problem could be reduced to something like:

   "> $(find somedir -somehow something)"

You don't need them, just highlight what you want to copy, put the cursor here
you want to paste it and middle click, works with telnet (I just tried it to
make sure, cool)

This is a HowTo install the networking services above:

It describes xinetd , wu-ftpd and telnetd services aquisition and

Date: Wed, 06 Dec 2000 04:13:49 GMT

Hi All,

I haven't seen a question like this anywhere, so I thought I would ask
it here.

Is there a program that can make a CDDB Audio Disk from a wav or mp3
file? And would this CDDB Disk work in any Audio CD Player (like the
car's CD player?). I want to hook a turntable and record an LP, then
encode it onto a CD that I can play in the car. Is this possible?

Thanks in advance.

comp.os.linux.security can help if you have intruders

If this happening on the 5th of the month you should look at your cron
setup.

The third field in a crontab entry is the date field so look for ones with
* * 5 8 * at the beginning

Sure can... cdrecord can burn wav files directly to disk... Something
like:

$ cdrecord dev=0,3,0 speed=4 -audio track1.wav track2.wav track3.wav

This is will give you a normal audio CD. You can't do it directly with mp3,
so you'd need to convert any mp3's to wav first.

I renamed the files so linux would recreate it. It is posted below.
Sorry for posting the whole file, but it's not that big anyway.

in the file /etc/rc.d/rc.modules, I have the following enabled:
/sbin/modprob via-rhine

but it fails when the system is rebooting. is the compiled file
supposed to have the extension o? (via-rhine.o) probably that's the
problem.

THanks.
Again the file u asked 4 is @ the bottom

Yup. Convert will work just fine. It's a very powerful command-line utility

Remember that (most? all?) distributions usually split library stuff into
a runtime and development part. To build programs, you need to have the
development part installed, too.

I have a Gateway Solo laptop 9300XL running Windows 98 and Linux
RedHat 7.0 as a dual boot (using Bootmagic). I recently used
PartionMagic 6.0 to resize the partions slightly (by 500MB), and
everything seems to have gone fine except except when I boot into
Linux I get a whole slew of messages related to the start-up files all
of the form

/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit ... invalid character 48 in exportstr for 0x00

This last part is always identical. The boot continues fine, however,
and once completed, there don't seem to be any problems. I get
identical errors on shutting down the machine too. So, three
questions:

- does anyone have any idea what this means?

- Is it serious?

- Should I/How do I cure the problem?
